First edition of this uncommon catalogue for the groundbreaking Art Deco line-up of Kellogg Masterphones and Masterbuilt Switchboards. Kellogg had pioneered the No. 1 Microphone telephone which was the first to integrate a transmitter and receiver in a single headset and wrapped in a Bakelite case which the Kellogg engineers renamed Kellite. This catalogue presents the stylish Masterphone line-up which also included the Dial type wallmounted photos while also still retaining wall phones magneto phones and others. The Masterbuilt Switchboards and municipal switchboards were some of the most successful models in the industry. Kellogg 1849-1909 organized his company in 1897 in order to take advantage of the Alexander Graham Bell patents while also building on the over 125 patents he had secured for magneto-multiple switchboard systems and later for his GrabAPhone which changed the telephone industry. First edition thus with supplements of this pioneering telephone directory for the Pacific States Telephone Companies which in 1900 became the Pacific States Telephone and Telegraph Co. and managed the West coast operations of the national AT&T or Bell system. Based out of their Richadson-inspired Romanesque building in San Francisco on Steiner Street the PSTC later PT&T had grown quickly from less than 1000 subscribers in 1891 to nearly 50000 by 1899 with 36541 in California 4177 in Oregon and 7156 in Washington State and this directory includes the very scarce leaf of the Idaho subscribers as well typically lacking. The first long distance telephone conversation held between San Francisco and Los Angeles was in 1894 and the company encouraged residences to obtain their own lines at 5¢ per day. While telephone rates in California varied from 10¢ to 50¢ those in Oregon Washington & Idaho were far higher with Zone Z no time limit running up to $ 1.00 per 3 minute use. Of particular interest is the list of subscribers in 1899 seven years prior to the 1906 Earthquake & Fire of Chinese subscribers in English and Chinese for the Chinese American Telephone Exchange. Founded in Chinatown originally in 1887 a public telephone pay station was installed in the Occidental Newspaper in 1891 and in 1894 a small switchboard was set up with Chinese-American telephone operators. John Sabin d. 1906 and Louis Glass would both later feature prominently in the trials and public hearings held in the Progressive Era to stamp out “The System†of graft and bribery in San Francisco. This catalogue even includes a nice series of illustrations on the installation of magneto switchboard systems and telephones for communities and businesses. First edition of this very scarce “pole line hardware†catalogue supplying all the necessary equipment during the early electrification of the United States in the Progressive Era. The Matthews & Brother Electrical Supply sold and supplied pole erecting equipment fuse-switches guy anchors connectors in short knobs protecting cages for public lighting devices to locate underground wiring & plumbing and more. Matthews 1866-1968 founded W.N. Matthews with his brother William in the early 1900’s and by 1912 moved into their large new factory shown in this catalogue. After graduating from Princeton in 1899 Matthews initially went to work for J.W. & W.D. Packard in Warren OH assisted in the designing and building of the first Packard Horseless Motor Car and in Nov. 1900 was responsible for selling the first four Packard’s built at the New York Auto show. Packard tried to convince him to stay but he returned instead to St. Louis to establish the electrical supply business with his brother which he would oversee until the 1950’s. N.p. probably Boston 1887. Very good. 8pp. Original printed wrappers stapled. Minor dust-soiling and edge wear soft vertical crease throughout. Internally clean. An apparently unrecorded prospectus for Woodward Underground Telephone and Telegraph Company an early New England telephone service provider that proposed underground lines between various cities in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. In his opening letter of the prospectus General Manager A.T. Woodward announces that the company's books "are now open for the subscriptions to the full-paid and non-assessable treasury stock for working capital of the company" and details proposed lines line leasing and other relevant information. Other sections of the prospectus detail "Competition of Revenues" a special notice regarding local applications for laying local lines in various cities and a five-item list touting "The Principal Advantages and the Practical and Scientific Points which Make the Woodward Underground System Superior to all other Systems Yet Produced." The final two sections are comprised of article extracts from two Boston newspapers.<br /> <br /> The only mention of the Woodward Underground Telephone and Telegraph Company in OCLC is for a 20pp. version of a similarly-titled prospectus with a plate held by the Hagley Museum. The present example was likely printed around the same time if not a little earlier; according to the front wrapper the present example was printed for Charles Odell the company's agent in Salem and Peabody Massachusetts. unknown

This exceptional reference not only offers an essential tool in tracking residents in the Portland-Vancouver area at the beginning of the 20th-Century but also lists many of the Chinese-American & Japanese-American residents in Portland’s very small Chinatown as well as businesses including restaurants. Of note are listings for such notable Chinese-Americans as Seid Gain Back and Seid Gain Back Jr. who at the time were two of the wealthiest businessmen on the West Coast as well as James & Nellie Brown Chinese-American photographers in Portland OR. The Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Co. had been formed from the Pacific States Telephone Co. in 1907 just 2 years before and was headed by Scott and Glass who would later become subject to the California investigations into graft and bribery in San Francisco. Additionally there is a distinct drop in the telephone listings for Japanese-America and Chinese-American residents and businesses in the directory although some such as Sing Chong & Co. and Seid Back continue to appear in the white pages but not the business listings. The editor is best known as a pioneering influential and divisive figure in the history of science fiction.
