TELEPHONE DIRECTORY
Telephone Despatch Company
The First Telephone Directory of Boston And Earliest Obtainable Telephone Directory TELEPHONE DIRECTORY. Telephone Despatch Company. Catalogue of Subscribers. Boston: J. N. George Manager July 1st 1880. First telephone directory of Boston. Octavo 9 1/4 x 5 3/4 inches; 233 x 148 mm. 40 pp. With two pages "Suggestions to Subscribers" and thirty-eight pages total of "Lists of Subscribers." The Boston Exchange is twenty-six pages the Edison Exchange is nine pages and the Brookline Exchange is three pages. Advertisements printed along lower margins and on verso of front wrapper and on both sides of back wrapper. We could find no other copies of this at auction in over 50 years nor could we find any copies on OCLC. This is the earliest obtainable telephone directory at present. No other copies beside the present copy of any earlier telephone directories have been sold at auction since 2008. This directory was printed just a year and a half after the first ever directory was printed in New Haven Connecticut on February 21 1878. A copy of the New Haven directory a later printing from November 1878 sold at auction in 2008 for $170500. Original printed green paper wrappers. Staple bound. Edges of wrappers chipped but not affecting text. Wrappers have been coated with a protective tape to prevent further chipping. First leaf a bit toned and partially detached but still holding. Some chipping and flaking to edges of leaves not affecting text. Overall a very good copy of this rare item. The scarcity of this item can be factored by its fragility as well as the fact that they were supposed to be discarded regularly as there were new updated versions printed every three months. "This Catalogue will be issued regularly hereafter once in three months. Supplementary lists will be printed as new names are added and sent to the subscribers." From the Suggestions to Subscribers. Of the three exchanges listed in the copy only the Boston exchange contains residential subscribers. The other two only contain business subscribers. Because this is the first telephone directory in Bostonthere are instructions for placing phone calls in the "Suggestions to Subscribers." "Subscribers will in all cases use the numbers in calling for connections giving their own number last viz.: 785 with 436. Where no number appears give name and address." The fact that this is the first telephone directory in Boston is particularly interesting as Boston is the home of Alexander Graham Bell the commonly accepted inventor of the telephone. The first telephone lines were placed between Boston and Somerville MA. "The Charles Williams Jr. House located on Arlington Street Somerville is the location of the first residential telephone line. The phone inside the house connected to Mr. Williamsí office at 109 Court Street in Boston about 3 miles away. Most notably 109 Court Street is where Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1875 and just one year later uttered the lines to his assistant Thomas A. Watson ìMr. Watson come here I want to see you.î Atlas Obscura. HBS 68003. $7500 J. N. George, Manager unknown

Telephone. Directories
The Long Island Telephone Co. General Office No. 397 Fulton Street Rooms 3 and 4.List of Subscribers Connected November 15 1882
Brooklyn: Eagle Job and Book Printing 1882. Very good plus. Three pamphlets. 31;3;7pp. Principal work in original printed wrappers; addenda in later wraps reproducing title page or first leaf of text. Previous vertical folds. Minor paper repairs to front original wrapper at lower corner and central gutter slightly affecting text. Light tanning and minor soiling. Exceedingly rare unrecorded group of early telephone directories for the Long Island Telephone Company which served the main areas of Brooklyn during the early 1880s. The company was incorporated in late September 1881 and by October 1882 was operating with a sublicense from the Metropolitan Telephone and Telegraph Company. The service existed for less than two years before being absorbed into the New York and New Jersey Telephone Company in June 1883. The three works in the present group date from November 1882 to April 1883. The primary directory consists of approximately 1000 entries about forty per page for residents and businesses alphabetically arranged with each entry providing name; residence or type of business; telephone exchange and number; and address. Williamsburg and Greenpoint were on different central exchanges than greater Brooklyn. The two separately issued 1883 addenda add another approximately 300 entries. These directories are fascinating not only for their documentation of who was acquiring this relatively new technology the overwhelming preponderance of entries are for businesses but also for the demonstration of its growth over the first several years of its use. The verso of the main directory title page contains an advertisement to subscribers for early long distance promoting five-minute calls to Westchester Hoboken Newark and towns further afield in New Jersey for twenty-five or thirty cents. It contains a further notice of a completed connection to the Western Union offices and the new availability of telegram by phone. The addenda in addition to providing information on recent subscribers also show recent developments such as the installation of pay phone stations across Brooklyn for "transient customers" and the establishment of exchange offices in Flushing and East New York. We are unable to locate other copies of directories or addenda from the Long Island Telephone Company. Any directory from this first era of commercial and public telecommunication is extremely rare and only a small handful of examples from other cities during the late 1870s and early 1880s are recorded most in single copies. The first multi-page telephone directory published in 1878 in New Haven Connecticut brought $170500 in the sale of the Richard Green Library at Christie's in 2008. Fine examples and important evidence of early telephone use in Brooklyn and the New York area. Eagle Job and Book Printing unknown books

Television Haussler William; National Broadcasting Company
A Collection of Thirty-Four Photographs Relating to the First Broadcasts of NBC Television c. 1937-1940
New York: RCA Corporation 1940. Very Good. In the late 1930s television was in its experimental phase and radio dominated the American media landscape. RCA and its NBC network directed experimental broadcasts from their studio in Radio City broadcasting from a transmitter at the top of the Empire State Building. The first large scale exposure the American public had to the new technology was at the 1939 World's Fair. NBC and its parent company RCA initiated a schedule of programming the same year to coincide with the exhibition. The onset of war the expense of the new machines and the limited geographic range of the broadcast limited the amount of television consumers until after the war. RCA's involvement in the development of television began in 1929 when the inventor Vladimir Zworykin convinced RCA's David Sarnoff to produce a commercial version of his prototype system. Sarnoff and RCA would eventually invest millions of dollars in the project. The present collection shows this development at the tail end when the technology was near completion and RCA had begun to promote the new technology in earnest. The first broadcasts were on W2XBS which would later become WNBC Channel 4 broadcasting from the Empire State Building transmitter at the top of the building. RCA began selling its TRK-5 and TRK-9 model televisions at the same point but the onset of the war and FCC involvement prevented the mass rollout the company had imagined. Of the thirty-six images here thirty are from the NBC archives mounted on linen and most with large labels to versos explaining the pictures. Many are credited to NBC staff photographer William Haussler. The NBC photographers tried to capitalize on the look of the modern era with the photos and the labels direct the conversation as such. One reads: "Modern Art / If this picture appears to be an example of ultra modern photography there is good reason. It has to do with television most modern of the arts." The photos show the facilities at Radio City and the Empire State Building. The new technology is on full display with the Iconoscope Camera shown in one image and various transmitters microphones and other pieces of equipment shown in others. One image at the Radio City studios shows Lanny Ross another shows the composer Walter Damrosch seated at a piano. The last few photographs - these without the internal NBC markings - show the first series of broadcasts from afar some showing the United Airlines-equipped Research ship in its journey over Manhattan another showing the Billy Soose boxing match of 1941 in Madison Square Garden. Another image printed in the 1950s shows the first ever NBC telecast in 1930 a single close-up of a Felix the Cat doll. A scarce collection and significant documentation of the early television age in America. We find no record of these images in the Getty NBC-Universal archive. Photographs generally well preserved in very good condition with some stray marks on versos overall quite well preserved. RCA Corporation unknown
