Con una testata alla dedica (al Cardinale Flavio Chigi) e tre incisioni xilografiche nel testo di cui due a mezza pagina con diagrammi astrologici ed una a piena pagina con una mano su cui sono tracciate partizioni e linee spiegate in una legenda. Legatura coeva in piena pergamena semirigida con nervi passanti, dorso liscio con titoli nitidamente manoscritti. Esemplare genuino ed in ottimo stato di conservazione. Edizione originale di quest'opera che contiene due trattati dedicati rispettivamente all'astrologia e alla chiromanzia. L'autore è G. B. Grassetti (1609-1684) che si firmava con l'anagramma Tasgresti. Quest'ultimo si propone di dimostrare la differenza tra vera astrologia, basata sull'osservazione astronomica e sull'autorità delle Sacre Scritture, di Aristotele e dei Padri della Chiesa, e la falsa astrologia, frutto della superstizione. Segue la parte dedicata alla vera chiromanzia, fisica e naturale, contrapposta alla falsa chiromanzia detta giudiziaria, che aveva all'epoca tra i massimi esponenti Bartolomeo Coclite o il luterano Giovanni de Indagine. Philadelphia: Published by Jacob Johnson 1803. First American Edition . Hardcover. Good. 16mo - over 5¾ - 6¾" tall. 16mo. 137 3 pages. Hardcover bound in original full brown leather. The binding shows wear and bumping but is sound with rubbed but secure hinges. Headcap of the spine is chipped. Small wormhole near the foot of the spine. Complete with endpapers and illustrated with 5 full-page copperplate engravings collates complete as well as several smaller text woodcuts. Early owner's signature on the recto of the frontis reads "Solomon Mordecai / Warrenton North Carolina Jan.y. 1st 1804." Another early signature for "Jos. Mordecai" is at the top of the title page. The Mordecai family was an important Jewish family in eastern North Carolina in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Jacob Mordecai founded the Warrenton Female Academy in 1809 and was assisted by his son Solomon and several daughters. This title was first published in 1761 by John Newbery in England thought to have actually be written by Oliver Goldsmith under the pseudonym of Tom Telescope. It was a science book written for youth. This is the First American edition. The Second American edition of 1808 is much more common. The "Teacher of Philadelphia" referred to on the title page is believed to have been Robert Patterson Professor of Mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania. Una tavola finale con tre figure incise raffiguranti i capitelli del Tempio di Dindara e di Henne. Edizione originale di questa dissertazione a cura dell'abate Domenico Testa (1746-1832), naturalista veneto di fama internazionale, che intende confutare le teorie di alcuni studiosi sull'origine ed il carattere astronomico attribuito al monumento del Tempio di Dindara e del Tempio di Henne, scoperti nel 1799. "Gli Egizi non conoscevano la costellazione (e quindi il segno zodiacale) della Bilancia, individuato dai Greci, e ne trae elementi per la postdatazione degli Zodiaci (in cui la Bilancia e' riprodotta) rispetto a quella da altri ad essi attribuita" (L. Cantamessa "Astrologia. Opere a stampa 1472-1900", 2007, p. 987). Prov.: Iniziali manoscritte al frontespizio (G. M.). Rif.: IT\ICCU\RAVE\001714. OCLC, 10942140.
