Alcuni dei maggiori astrofisici italiani ci faranno da guida in un viaggio che attraverserà le conquiste della scienza per arrivare ai problemi ancora aperti in astronomia e in cosmologia e illustrarci in che modo ci stiamo attrezzando per venirne a capo. Ma non è finita. Anche il libro che accompagnerà la rivista in edicola è dedicato all'astronomia. Inedito in Italia, Il telescopio di Einstein è lo splendido lavoro di Evalyn Gates, direttore aggiunto del Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics di Chicago, un libro accolto con entusiasmo da scienziati e divulgatori del calibro di Neil deGrasse Tyson, Sean Carroll e Lawrence Krauss. Oggi la cosmologia, esordisce l'autrice, sta attraversando una vera età dell'oro. Mai come in questo periodo siamo stati vicini a scoprire tutte le leggi che governano il cosmo, unificando la nostra visione dell'infinitamente piccolo e dell'infinitamente grande. E mai abbiamo avuto strumenti che ci permettessero di sondare lo spazio che ci circonda con tanta profondità e con tanto dettaglio. E che, a dirla tutta, non sono esattamente un fattore trascurabile, visto che la materia ordinaria costituisce a malapena il 5 per cento di tutto ciò che ci circonda. Siamo immersi, dunque, in qualcosa che in millenni di osservazione è sfuggito alla nostra attenzione. E che nemmeno gli strumenti più raffinati riescono a cogliere. Per ora. A venirci incontro, spiega Evalyn Gates, potrebbe essere la natura stessa, mettendoci a disposizione il prezioso strumento che ha battezzato, appunto, "il telescopio di Einstein". Ovvero le lenti gravitazionali, il fenomeno previsto dalla teoria della relatività che grazie alla curvatura dello spazio intorno a oggetti di grande massa ci permette di vedere le immagini di ciò che è nascosto dietro di essi. Quando incontra, per esempio, una galassia di grande massa, la luce di una stella lontana viene deviata dal suo cammino, e l'immagine ci arriva distorta, ma ricca di informazioni che altrimenti non ci sarebbe dato conoscere. Tra i massimi esperti mondiali di tutto ciò che è oscuro - dice di lei deGrasse Tyson - Evalyn Gates ricompone con metodo e con stile tutti i pezzi del puzzle cosmico, espone le più accreditate ipotesi sulle particelle che potrebbero costituire la materia oscura, analizza l'espansione dell'universo e la sua accelerazione, ci mostra l'impronta dell'energia oscura sulla ragnatela cosmica.
