Mineralogen Anton Schrötter von Kristelli (1802-1875) mit dem Vermerk ?(Private)?. ?[...] I am making an extensive collection of postage-stamps and stamped envelopes and am curious to obtain a complete set of those used in Austria [...]?. --- Der in Olmütz geborene Anton Schrötter, Sohn eines Apothekers, studierte ab 1822 zunächst auf Wunsch seines Vaters in Wien Medizin, wechselte dann aber unter dem Einfluss von Friedrich Mohs zu den naturwissenschaftlichen Fächern, speziell der Mineralogie. 1827 erhielt er eine Assistentenstelle für Physik und Mathematik an der Universität Wien. 1830 wurde er Professor für Physik und Chemie am Technischen Institut Joanneum in Graz. Während eines halbjährigen Urlaubs im Jahre 1838 besuchte er chemische Institute in Göttingen, Heidelberg, Frankfurt und Paris. In Gießen machte er sich bei Justus von Liebig mit der organischen Elementaranalyse vertraut. Ab 1843 arbeitete er als Professor für technische Chemie am Polytechnischen Institut der Universität Wien und übernahm dort 1845 die Professur für allgemeine Chemie. Schrötter war neben Baumgartner, Ettingshausen und Haidinger einer der Begründer der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien und wurde 1850 ihr Generalsekretär. Die Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina wählte Schrötter 1856 zu ihrem Mitglied. Ab 1868 leitete er das österreichische Hauptmünzamt und wurde gleichzeitig zum Ministerialrat ernannt. Er wurde 1874 in den Ruhestand versetzt und eröffnete in seiner Wohnung ein Privatlaboratorium, in dem er Studien über Edelmetalle betrieb. 1875 starb er in Wien. Schrötter hat in seinem Leben ca. 60 wissenschaftliche Publikationen verfasst. Ab 1845 beschäftigte Schrötter sich intensiv mit Phosphor. 1848 gelang ihm der Nachweis der schon von Berzelius geäußerten Vermutung, dass roter Phosphor eine allotrope Modifikation des weißen Phosphors, nicht aber eine Phosphorverbindung ist. Schrötter wandelte weißen Phosphor durch Erhitzen in roten um, den man zeitweise Schrötterschen Phosphor nannte. Sein Verfahren zur Darstellung desselben revolutionierte die Streichholzindustrie, wo roter Phosphor schon bald als Bestandteil der Reibflächen genutzt wurde. Magistrale synthèse traduite de l’allemand par Charles Galuski et Hervé Faÿe. Première édition allemande en 1845. L’ouvrage comprend une description du ciel et de la terre, un essai sur le développement de l’univers et de nombreuses explications des phénomènes célestes et terrestres, formant un véritable panorama du monde. Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) est un naturaliste, géographe et explorateur allemand. Il était membre associé de l’Académie des sciences française et président de la Société de géographie de Paris. Par la qualité des relevés topographiques et des prélèvements de faune et de flore effectués lors de ses expéditions en Amérique Centrale et du Sud, puis en Sibérie, il a fondé les bases des explorations scientifiques. De Humboldt intégrant ses observations géographiques, géologiques et météorologiques recueillies lors de ses voyages, et étudiant la place de l'homme dans la nature pour proposer une étude fondatrice de la géographie moderne.Né à Berlin (1769 - 1859), Alexandre de Humboldt fut très tôt passionné par les sciences naturelles et la minéralogie ; curieux de tout, il se livre à des expériences sur l'électricité et sur la météorologie. Il s'installe à Paris en 1797 puis il entreprend un voyage d'exploration en Amérique du Sud avec le botaniste français Bonpland, notamment en Amazonie puis à Cuba, au Pérou et dans les Andes, au Mexique et enfin aux Etats-Unis ; après cinq années (1799 - 1804) passées à amasser des matériaux de toutes sortes et dans de nombreux domaines (botanique, zoologie, climatologie, géographie, cartographie, géologie, etc.), ils regagnent Paris, qui est alors une grande capitale scientifique. Humboldt est alors considéré comme une encyclopédie vivante et fréquente Berthollet, Laplace, Gay-Lussac, etc. En 1826, il est obligé de rentrer en Prusse ou il ne se plait pas beaucoup et entreprend, dès 1827, un voyage d''exploration dans l'Oural et en Sibérie. Son Cosmos est le véritable condensé et la lumineuse synthèse des connaissances humaines de l'époque sur la géographie et les phénomènes physiques inter-dépendants qui font de lui le créateur de la météorologie moderne, de la géophysique,etc. Alexander von Humboldt fut, selon Darwin, "le plus grand savant voyageur qui ait jamais vécu".
