Her Scientific Advocacy And Journalism Included Astronomy Columns In The Toronto Star "With The Stars" 1951-81 And The Journal Of The Royal Astronomical Society Of Canada "Out Of Old Books" 1946-65. She Was Considered A "Great Scientist And A Gracious Person" Over A Career Of Sixty Years. After Graduating From Mount Holyoke Hogg Received A Fellowship For Graduate Study At Harvard Observatory In The Fall Of 1926 With The Help Of Dr. Cannon.3 Once At Harvard Hogg Worked With Dr. Harlow Shapley The Director Of The Graduate Program In Astronomy. Hogg Received Her Master's Degree In 1928 And Her Doctoral Degree In 1931 Both From Radcliffe College As Harvard Refused To Award Graduate Degrees In Science To Women At The Time. For Her Advances In Astronomy Hogg Received Honorary Doctoral Degrees From Six Canadian And U.S. Universities Including Mount Holyoke College And The University Of Toronto. While Completing Her Doctoral Degree Hogg Taught Astronomy At Mount Holyoke And At Smith College. After Graduation She Moved To Victoria British Columbia Where She Began Research At The Dominion Astrophysical Observatory. Hogg Began Taking Photos Of Variable Stars With The 72-Inch Reflecting Telescope Cataloguing The Cyclical Changes In The Brightness Of The Variable Stars. At The Dominion Astrophysical Observatory Hogg Found 132 New Variable Stars In The Globular Cluster Messier 2. Hogg Published This Groundbreaking Work In Astronomical Catalogues That Are Still Used Today. Notably Hogg Accomplished All Of This As A Volunteer Assistant To Her Husband As The Dominion Astrophysical Observatory Would Not Offer Her A Job. In 1935 Hogg Moved To The University Of Toronto After Her Husband Had Received A Job Offer To Work At The David Dunlap Observatory.6 For Her First Year There Hogg Continued Her Work Photographing Globular Clusters Amassing Thousands Of Photographs Which She Used To Identify Many Thousands Of Variable Stars. She Published Catalogue Of 1116 Variable Stars In Globular Clusters In 1939 The First Of Three Catalogues She Completed With A Fourth In The Works At The Time Of Her Death. In Addition To Her Work On Variable Stars In Globular Clusters Hogg Used The Period-Luminosity Relationship Of Cepheid Variable Stars Discovered By Henrietta Swan Leavitt In 1908 To Enhance The Understanding Of The Milky Way Galaxy's Age Size And Structure. During The Late 1930S Hogg Became One Of The First Astronomers To Travel And Work Around The World To Advance Her Research As The Globular Clusters She Was Observing Were Best Seen From The Southern Hemisphere. From 1939 To 1941 Hogg Returned To America To Serve As The President Of The American Association Of Variable Star Observers 1939-1941 And The Acting Chair Of Mount Holyoke's Astronomy Department 1940-1941. Upon Returning To The David Dunlap Observatory She Took On Teaching Duties At The University Of Toronto Largely As A Result Of Male Staff Being Away Due To World War Ii.35 Retaining Her Position After The Men Returned From War Hogg Advanced To Assistant Professor In 1951 Associate Professor In 1955 Full Professor In 1957 And Professor Emerita In 1976 Upon Her Retirement. brossura Il presente saggio propone di svelare il segreto più intimo della città di Napoli attraverso un'indagine archeo-astronomica sulle motivazioni religiose e filosofiche che furono alla base dell'urbanistica del suo antico nucleo greco, Neapolis, fondato nel V secolo a.C. dai Cumani ed altri coloni greci. Lo studio rivela che la città fu progettata in modo da richiamare nella geometria delle sue strade e nel suo peculiare orientamento geografico-astronomico durante i solstizi e gli equinozi il culto di Apollo (il dio Sole dei Greci) e di Partenope (la sirena-oracolo del luogo). La planimetria di Neapolis sembra derivare anche dalla cosmologia pitagorica basata sulla sezione aurea e le proporzioni armoniche del numero dieci. Tutto questo fece di Neapolis un perfetto microcosmo, o meglio, una città-tempio con al centro il sole divino.

In 8 gr. pp. (4) + 34 con 1 tav. f. t. inc. all'acquaf. raff. un grande telescopio. Scarpellini, nato a Foligno nel 1763 e morto nel 1840, fu professore di fisica e matematica, nonche' astronomo. A lui si deve la fondazione dell'accademia scientifica Caetaniana, detta poi 'dei nuovi lincei'. Nominato professore di fisica sacra alla Sapienza a Roma fu particolarmente noto come costruttore di strumenti scientifici che, alla sua morte verranno dati aal Sapienza.

in-8 (ma segnato in-4, mm 192 x 140), pp. (4), 34, (2), legatura in cartone rustico. Al titolo raffigurazione del ''sole ellittico'', nel testo 9 tavole di osservazione solare e 10 illustrazioni, il tutto in silografia n.t., testatine e finalini ornati. Prima edizione, assai rara, di questo trattato dedicato dallo Scheiner al fenomeno di rifrazione solare all'orizzonte che, soprattutto al mattino, fa apparire il sole ellittico anziché sferico, anche attraverso l'osservazione al telescopio. Basato sulle osservazioni che l'astronomo gesuita (1573-1650) compì di ritorno da Ingolstad tra 1612 e 1613 questo lavoro si inserisce nella dibattuta querelle sulle Macchie Solari che nacque tra lo Scheiner e Galileo. Il testo apparve una seconda volta nel 1617 ma con il titolo ''Refractiones coelestes'' e sostanzialmente cambiato nel contenuto e nelle illustrazioni.
