In 1970 a rare phenomena occurred in the Astronomy world -- a bright long-peroid comet was seen circling relatively close to the sun and was named Comet Kohoutek 1973f . At that time astronomers throughout the world using various means and different techniques up to and including the then new Skylab and other NASA technologies set out to study this new Comet. This book is the result of a two day workshop held at Marshall Space Flight Centre with the attendance of over 100 scientists from all over the world to listen to 42 papers for discussion and dissemination of data gained by the various scientists about Comet Kohoutek. Rubbing and slight creasing to the book corners and to the head and to the heel of the back strip. The spine has become faded and results of insect activity can also be seen to the top edge. Le strutture in pietra da loro prodotte furono edificate sia per ragioni utilitaristiche, di riparo, difensive, ma anche con motivazioni religiose e di culto. In tutti i casi lo studio accurato, condotto con le più moderne tecniche di rilevamento e di georeferenziazione, ha mostrato che l'osservazione del cielo e la conoscenza dei cicli astronomici fondamentali mostrati dal sole, dalla luna e dalle stelle, condizionarono in maniera molto determinante sia il modo di disporre le pietre sia l'orientazione delle strutture che ne derivarono, rispetto alle direzioni astronomiche fondamentali. Il cielo visibile in quelle epoche remote, dalle nostre montagne, era un po' diverso da quello che noi oggi possiamo ammirare, in quanto tra i cicli che regolano il moto apparente degli astri ne esistono alcuni che - nei secoli e nei millenni - sono capaci di modificare in maniera rilevante le posizioni delle stelle visibili nel cielo. In modo che determinate costellazioni che allora erano visibili ora non lo sono più, e viceversa altre, che allora non salivano mai al di sopra dell'orizzonte naturale locale, ora possono essere facilmente osservate. Il calcolo astronomico, condotto con i più moderni metodi di calcolo, ha permesso di ricostruire accuratamente sia il cielo visibile durante quelle antiche epoche sia le condizioni di visibilità e hanno permesso, insieme alle misure eseguite sul campo, di rendersi conto di cosa vedevano, osservavano e calcolavano i nostri progenitori alpini, i quali anche se dotati di minor tecnologia rispetto a noi uomini moderni non erano da meno dal punto di vista delle capacità intellettuali. Un altro aspetto molto importante è relativo all'uso rituale e simbolico che le antiche popolazioni alpine fecero delle osservazioni astronomiche: se da un lato esse servirono per gestire la vita agricola, pastorale, sociale e religiosa, finalizzate al benessere quotidiano della comunità, dall'altro la conoscenza del cielo e dei suoi fenomeni permise lo sviluppo dei calendari, taluni molto sofisticati ed efficienti, e lo sviluppo di una cosmologia destinata a rendere conto della struttura e del significato ultimo dell'universo, così come era concepito da queste antiche popolazioni. Anche a quel tempo, come ora, l'uomo era in cerca di risposte in relazione alla sua origine al suo destino e al mondo che lo circondava e la conoscenza del cielo e dei suoi fenomeni contribuì in modo fondamentale a esse. Questo libro descrive i risultati più recenti ottenuti dallo studio archeologico, storico e astronomico delle antiche popolazioni alpine e dei reperti che ci hanno lasciato e fornisce risposte inedite a molti quesiti che fino a ora erano rimasti senza un'adeguata spiegazione.
