Clearly Huygens considered this degree to be adequate in the case of his explanations of light and gravity. It is difficult for the historian to assert how Huygens considered his theories about life on other planets and about the existence of beings comparable to man. The theories were expounded in his KOSMOSTHEOROS (1698). The argument of the book is very methodically set forth and its earnestness suggests that Huygens did indeed assign a very high degree of probability to these conjectures. In the Copernican world system the earth holds no privileged position among the other planets. It would therefore be unreasonable to suppose that life should be restricted to the earth alone. There must be life on the other planets and living beings endowed with reason who can contemplate the richness of the creation, since in their absence this creation would be senseless and the earth, again, would have an unreasonably privileged position... In the second part of Kosmostheoros Huygens discussed the different movements of the heavenly bodies and how they must appear to the inhabitants of the planets. ‎Première édition française, et première traduction, du Cosmotheoros sive de Terris Coelestibus, publié à La Haye en 1698, trois ans après la mort de Christiaan Huygens (La Haye, 1629-1695), physicien, mathématicien et astronome, découvreur des anneaux de Saturne et de son satellite Titan (1655), auteur de l'Horologium Oscillatorium (1673) et de la théorie ondulatoire de la lumière. Craignant la censure, Huygens avait confié le manuscrit à son frère Constantijn avec instruction de ne le publier qu'après sa mort. La traduction française paraît à Paris dès 1702, avant les traductions allemande (1703), russe (1717) et suédoise (1774). Le traducteur, désigné au titre par les seules initiales M. D., n'est pas identifié avec certitude.Dans cet ouvrage à la frontière de l'astronomie, de la philosophie naturelle et de la spéculation cosmologique, Huygens imagine les conséquences de la révolution copernicienne : si la Terre n'occupe aucune position privilégiée dans l'univers, il devient raisonnable de supposer que les autres planètes puissent elles aussi être habitées. Il envisage les conditions physiques de ces mondes, leur aspect vu depuis leur surface et la possibilité d'êtres vivants capables d'observer et de comprendre le ciel, étendant cette analogie aux étoiles elles-mêmes, considérées comme autant de soleils susceptibles d'être accompagnés de planètes. Le Cosmotheoros constitue ainsi « le premier ouvrage consacré entièrement à l'hypothèse de la vie extraterrestre par un scientifique renommé ». Huygens ne présente cependant pas ces propositions comme des certitudes : il les développe sous forme de conjectures appuyées sur l'observation astronomique, le raisonnement analogique et la probabilité, « The argument of the book is very methodically set forth and its earnestness suggests that Huygens did indeed assign a very high degree of probability to these conjectures » (DSB).Ex-libris Charles Lacour. In dieser Ausgabe nicht bei Houzeau. Titelblatt in Rot und Schwarz gedruckt mit Holzschnittdruckermarke als Titelvignette. Enthält 43 (von 50) Holzschnitten im Text und Holzschnittinitialen. Vorhanden sind alle 41 Sternbildholzschnitte. Von den ursprünglich 7 Planetenholzschnitten fehlen 6, vorhanden ist die Sonne. Auf dem Titelblattverso findet sich der Mikrokosmosholzschnitt, dafür fehlt der den Band abschließende Sphaera-Mundi-Holzschnitt aus Ratdolts Sacrobosco (1485). Die Holzschnitte der Sternbilder sind angelehnt an jene, die für die 1482 bei Ratdolt in Venedig publizierte Ausgabe verwendet wurden. Die Holzschnittdruckermarke auf dem Titelblatt sowie die Holzschnittinitialen im Text hatte Jean Lambert (1493-1518) im Jahr 1503 vom bedeutenden Pariser Buchdrucker Félix Baligault (gestorben im Jahr 1506) übernommen. Im Jahr 1514 ließ er eine Ausgabe des "De Astronomica" bzw. "Poeticon astronomicon" durch den in Paris tätigen, deutschen Buchdrucker Thomas Kees aus Wesel drucken. Der Pariser Buchhändler Pasquier Lambert (gestorben vor 1519) übernahm die Nachfolge Jean Lamberts und nutzte weiterhin die Initalien ebenso wie die Druckermarke in den Jahren 1515-1517. Von dieser machte er, seinem Vorgänger gleich, auch für die Ausgabe des "Poeticon astronomicon" Gebrauch, hier allerdings mittlerweile ohne integrierte Namen, wobei er bei den zuletzt von ihm publizierten Werken eine eigene, an die vorige motivisch angelehnte Druckermarke verwendete (Drucke erschienen 1517 und 1518, vgl. Renouard 542). Die Sternbildholzschnitte wurden vorwiegend aus der Ausgabe von 1514 übernommen, mit kleinen Variationen beim Pegasus und beim Skorpion. Außen- und Fußsteg breitrandig. Einband etwas berieben und im Leder mit Druckstellen, auf dem vorderen Vorsatz kopiertes Exlibris privat montiert, kleinere Vorbesitzerstempel auf den Vorsätzen, die ersten drei und die letzten sieben Blatt mit deutlichen Randläsuren (ohne Textberührung) sowie einige Seiten in den Ecken mit leichten Läsuren, Titelblatt etwas stärker gebräunt, berieben sowie minimal tinten- und leicht wasserfleckig, Seiten insgesamt leicht gebräunt und stellenweise knickspurig (insbesondere die ersten und letzten Blatt), Seiten im unteren Bundsteg sowie stellenweise im Kopfsteg mit dezenterem Wasserrand (wenig nachgebräunt, nicht gewellt, keine Textberührung), es fehlen die Blatt [A2] und [A3] sowie [K1-4]. Latin edition. Comprises 43 of the 50 woodcuts, including the 41 astronomical constellations, one of the planet woodcuts (the sun) and the microcosm woodcut. Later, plain leather binding with marbled boards and deckled edges. Binding a bit rubbed and with pressure marks, copy of a bookplate mounted on endpaper, small previous owner's stamps on endpapers, first page darkened and rubbed, first three and last seven sheets with defects to the margins (text not affected) as well as some pages' corners with light defects, title page darkened, rubbed as well as minimally ink stained and a bit dampstained, pages throughout lightly darkened and some with crease marks (especially first and last sheets), pages partially with tidemark (lightly darkened, not wavy, text not affected), sheets [A2] and [A3] as well as [K1-4] are missing.‎
