brossura Fin dalla più remota antichità, il cielo e i fenomeni «straordinari» che vi si verificano sono stati guardati con attenzione, sconcerto, paura e meraviglia. Le comete, o altre apparizioni in svariate forme (travi di fuoco, draghi fluttuanti, spiriti combattenti, luci e colorazioni anomale, strani oggetti volanti), le piogge di sangue, le eclissi erano osservate con timore e con fervore pronosticante, anche perché ritenute segni arcani di sventure e di accadimenti eccezionali, in un connubio duraturo di astronomia e di astrologia. Non di rado, poi, i fatti e i loro presunti significati venivano piegati da chi li registrava e li commentava ad esigenze strumentali di carattere politico o religioso e ad intenti finalizzati a una ridondanza iperbolica, e la loro interpretazione era condizionata dai livelli culturali e dalle conoscenze scientifiche relativi alle varie epoche. Detto ciò, sarebbe superficiale liquidare sempre e comunque i racconti di certi eventi come fantasie o operazioni «editoriali»: i resoconti (numerosissimi in ogni epoca storica) di eventi celesti ritenuti «prodigiosi» possono infatti contenere, oltre a inevitabili esagerazioni, fraintendimenti e scopi strumentali, anche importanti elementi di «verità» e rappresentare, quantunque conditi dalla maraviglia del pensiero pre-scientifico, cronache e testimonianze relative a qualcosa di concreto e non sempre di facile decifrazione persino alla luce delle attuali conoscenze. Con un lungo e meticoloso lavoro di ricerca e di ricognizione in una mole enorme di fonti antiche, medievali e d'età moderna, oltre che con il ricorso a comparazioni con i più recenti studi scientifici ed astronomici, Eraldo Baldini ci conduce con questo libro in un viaggio tra le incredibili osservazioni fatte nei secoli dagli uomini europei, italiani e soprattutto dell'area emiliano-romagnola. Un viaggio ricco di informazioni e di implicazioni che non mancherà di affascinare i lettori, di condurli a risposte e di rinnovare in loro suggestive domande.
