ill., ril. I buchi neri hanno il fascino delle cose misteriose e allo stesso tempo sono l'esito teorico necessario di una grande teoria, quella della relatività di Einstein. Come se non bastasse, esistono davvero e oggi ne abbiamo le prove. All'inizio non erano altro che una possibile soluzione matematica delle equazioni della relatività generale, ma lo stesso Einstein pensava che fossero solo una speculazione teorica, non oggetti reali. Osservazioni cosmologiche successive, negli anni sessanta e settanta, hanno però reso i buchi neri una realtà tangibile. Si tratta di residui di stelle esplose e collassate su se stesse, quantità enormi di materia superdensa talmente massiccia che il campo gravitazionale tutt'attorno si chiude su se stesso. Ciò significa che la velocità di fuga dall'interno di un buco nero è maggiore della velocità della luce o, in altre parole, che non importa quanto forte tiriate: da dentro un buco nero non può uscire niente. Dopo decenni di intensa ricerca, oggi sappiamo che di buchi neri ne esistono diverse categorie, e la fisica del loro comportamento e di come la loro presenza influenzi lo spazio circostante risulta più strana del più visionario dei romanzi. In questo breve libro, Gubser e Pretorius introducono il lettore alla teoria della relatività, per passare in seguito ad analizzare i buchi neri sia come oggetti astronomici, sia come laboratori teorici nei quali i fisici possono mettere alla prova la loro comprensione della gravitazione, della fisica quantistica e della termodinamica. Dai buchi neri di Schwarzschild, a quelli rotanti, dalle collisioni tra buchi neri, alla radiazione gravitazionale, dalla radiazione di Hawking alla perdita di informazione, il libro racconta tutti i misteri che si celano dietro a questi giganti del cosmo. Strada facendo spiegano anche cosa succederebbe se dovessimo cadere dentro a un buco nero, per giungere al suo nucleo, dove per le leggi della fisica il tempo si ferma e la materia si compatta a densità teoricamente infinite. Sempre ammesso che non sia già successo e non ce ne siamo accorti. Infine, gli autori raccontano quel che è accaduto nel settembre 2015, quando l'interferometro LIGO ha captato per la prima volta l'onda gravitazionale causata dalla collisione di due enormi buchi neri, avvenuta un miliardo di anni fa nello spazio profondo. Lo scontro ha causato la propagazione di un'onda gravitazionale che è stata rilevata a terra e che rappresenta a un tempo un'eclatante conferma della loro esistenza, la correttezza delle previsioni teoriche della relatività generale e un nuovo straordinario strumento a disposizione dei cosmologi per l'indagine futura dell'universo.
