Tranches rouges. L’ouvrage étant restauré, plats en excellent état. Mors et coins restaurés, parfaitement solidifiés. Les tranches sont affectées par un lég. trou. Page de titre rouge et noire. L’intérieur est frais, en dépit de trous de vers sur la partie supérieure, mais sans jamais altérer le texte. Mouillures et lég. auréoles. Les 24 cartes sont toutes présentes et toutes restaurées par rajout de papier (certaines n’en ayant pas eu besoin). L’ouvrage est signé Grandidier en début et en fin de volume, sans qu’il soit possible d’affirmer qu’il s’agit d’une marque de provenance. En dépit des imperfections signalées, malgré les restaurations entreprises, exceptionnel exemplaire, en bon état, entièrement complet de ses 24 cartes (Nombreuses photographies sur demande). Titre complet : Atlas des enfans ou mémoire nouvelle, courte, facile et démonstrative pour apprendre la géographie en XXII cartes enluminées. Avec un nouveau traité de la sphère, où l’on explique le mouvement des astres, et les systèmes du monde ancien et moderne, l’usage des globes et des mesures géographiques. Avec figures. L’Atlas des enfans, publié chez Schneider en 1760, s’inscrit dans une tendance, bien caractéristique du XVIIIe siècle, à l’émergence d’une véritable littérature géographique destinée à la jeunesse, ces ouvrages étant légion en France, en Allemagne et en France. En réalité, ils sont bien souvent de réels abrégés de texte initialement destinés à l’adulte, fréquemment considéré comme des « adultes incomplets » (B. Huber, « L’enfant et la carte au XVIIIe siècle » : Mappemonde, 52, 1998.4). Aussi, l’introduction indique que cet Atlas peut aussi convenir à des personnes déjà versées dans cette science, et il s’agit alors d’un « atlas portatif », un « atlas de poche ». Ces atlas sont fréquemment accompagnés de traités sur la sphère, géographie et cosmographie étant liées à l’époque (B. Huber, préc.). La structure de notre ouvrage s’articule, pour l’ « Atlas des enfans », autour des 24 cartes, toutes coloriées. Celles-ci ne contiennent aucun nom, seulement des chiffres, des lettres et des signes afin que les enfants puissent apprendre par cœur et s’y repérer. L’Atlas se charge ensuite de les expliquer, sans fioriture. En effet, « la meilleure méthode géographique est sans contredit, celle qui joint à la brièveté, l’ordre le plus commode pour la mémoire des enfants », l’auteur ayant ainsi choisi de se cantonner à la stricte géographie, et non verser dans des détails historiques et économiques, qui pourraient perdre l’attention ». Aussi, l’étude afférente à chaque carte se décline selon un ordre naturel, s’intéressant tout d’abord au terroir d’un pays, aux mœurs de ses habitants, puis les principales divisions de ce pays, ses villes, ses rivières, ses caps et ses montagnes, tout en finissant en établissant ses limites. Les renseignements sont donc très nombreux sur l’Europe de cette époque. Concernant l’Atlas, 22 cartes (l’exemplaire est complet, toutes dépliantes) peuvent être recensées : tout d’abord, une carte du monde, gravé par Christian Sepp, célèbre graveur de cartes originaire de Goslar (Allemagne), établi à Amsterdam (« C. Sepp omnes fecit »), puis une carte de l’Europe, avant de reprendre les pays suivants : Portugal (assez rare pour l’époque), Espagne, France, Allemagne, Suisse, Italie, Pays-Bas, Provinces-Unies, Grande-Bretagne, Danemark, Norvège, Suède, Moscovie, Prusse, Pologne, Hongrie, Turquie en Europe. Puis, l’on trouve une carte de l’Asie, de l’Afrique et de l’Amérique, sans que l’Océanie ne soit représentée. Enfin, dans le traité de la sphère, on trouve deux cartes dépliantes, celle représentant la sphère, celle représentant les systèmes. Notre édition est l’originale (1760), qui a paru à peine plus de deux ans après que Sepp ait gravé la carte, l’ayant ensuite revendu à l’éditeur Schneider. Elle est d’autant plus importante que de très nombreuses éditions pirates ont suivi par la suite. Les exemplaires de l’édition de 1760, bien complet des 24 cartes sont aujourd’hui excessivement rares. Bel exemplaire, habilement restauré, de cet atlas des enfants, complet de toutes ses cartes coloriées, et quasiment introuvables aujourd’hui.

Venice, heirs of Luc'Antonio Giunta, 1543. First edition of an outstanding astronomical treatise containing a discussion of the Earth's rotation on its axis. This is the Sicilian born mathematician Maurolico's (1494-1575) first and most important work, including the 4-leaf "Ad Lectorem" often missing- a convenient list of the astronomical parameters culled from various authorities found embedded within the text- which is dated 5 December 1542. Written in the form of three dialogues, this work was completed at Messina 21 October 1535 (f.103). But the preface, a dedicatory letter to Cardinal Bembo with a list of Maurolico's numerous unpublished works, is dated 5 February 1540, the year of publication of Rheticus' "Narratio prima", where he could have learned about the Copernican theory. Maurolico's comprehensive introduction to astronomy includes references to the voyages of Vespucci and Columbus' discovery of America (f.18r and f.34v), and the evidence that discussions of the earth's motion were in the air. The author sought to revive the Eudoxine system, a geocentric, homocentric system of spheres designed to account for the motion of planets as seen from the earth without recourse to the epicycles of Ptolemy. It has been suggested that this is the first work to attack Copernicus in print. As the latter's epoch making "De revolutionibus" was also published in 1543, "it must remain an open question whether Maurolico alludes to Calcagnini or Copernicus" (Dreyer, History of the Planetary Systems, p. 295). One dialogue between teacher and pupil treats "the absurdity of the earth moving and turning on its axis". Further contained are discussions of the theory and use of various astronomical instruments and the computation of time. Each book with separate title. With 1 fine text engraving. Contemporary calf; some insignificant browning (heavier to end-papers and signatures Dd and Gg), otherwise a lovely copy. First edition of one of the earliest and most famous attempts to reconcile the formation and structure of the earth with the Biblical account of creation. Burnet's origin theory, first espoused in his earlier Theory of the earth (first English edition published in London, 1684), was classified into three distinct stages of physical changes, based on Cartesian mechanics, in which the earth was poised between a deluge and conflagration. He here argues that all events of earth history can be accounted for by natural processes, relying primarily on reasoning (philosophy) rather than observations for his theory. His allegorical treatment of the Bible, in particular his account of the conversation between Eve and the Serpent, was considered so offensive that he was forced to resign his position at court. Burnet (1635-1715), the first English cosmogonist, was closely affiliated with the Cambridge Platonists during his stay as a fellow in Christ's College, and served as a chaplain to William III. His public missive "Ad clarissimum virum A.B.," issued soon afterwards, was an apologetic attempt to pacify his most critical opponents. Burnet spent much of the rest of his life writing in defense of his theory which consequently became the most famous and influential among the eighteenth-century speculations on origin.

With 12 full-page engraved plates, incl. the frontispiece, all beautifully coloured by hand. 154 pp. Nicely illustrated children's instructive reading book, teaching them various subjects in an entertaining manner. At the end of the 18th century the pedagogues were convinced that children learned most when they were amused. The present "Amusing Teacher" is a nice example of teaching by entertaining. The old philosopher, Philander, lodges six little boys and six little girls, under care of a man and a woman respectively, in a small house on his estate, and gives them some books to read. Each group of children visits the big house on two appointed days each week to tell what they have been reading and to discuss it with Philander. So the children read short stories and fables, which give Philander the opportunity to add all sorts of instructive information on natural science, cosmography, geography, etc. The book is freely adapted after an English original to fit Dutch conditions, so Philander also gives a complete survey of the geography of the Netherlands. The English original however, is still unknown. The fine plates include illustrations of a globe, the solar system with a spherical globe, a map, etc. This children's book includes a story about the voyage of Commander Byron to Patagonia (pp.91-93). Fine copy, with school-prize certificate by the Committee of the Haarlem Department of the "Batavian" Educational Society "Tot Nut van 't Alg. Buijnsters, <I>BNK</I>, 1600; <I>Cat. With 8 large original astronomical drawings in text, including a fine full-page watercolour illustration of a compass, and astronomical and cosmographical drawings on 4 large folding lvs. bound in, and on 4 smaller folding lvs. loosely inserted, and one large engraved circular lunar map, cut and mounted on a blank leaf. 292 lvs. written in brown ink in a regular running hand, all versos left blank except for drawings and some additional notes, and 10 pp. index at the end. Complete and thorough manuscript course in cosmography and astronomy, obviously the notebook of a very neat and orderly pupil, and probably noted down from the dictation of a private tutor. In the present manuscript a small card is clipped to the page with the mounted engraved lunar map stating: "Bewijs van Betoonde Vlijt in de Maanden Maart en April. H.L. van Hooff" (Token of Industry shown in the months March and April. H.L. van Hooff). The engraved lunar map was obviously intended as a school-prize. A small slip of paper is also found, stating: "Aardrijkskundeschrift 1810" (Geography Notebook 1810), but this was probably written at a later date by Van Hooff. The name of the pupil and author of the manuscript is also found gilt-stamped on spine of the binding. The course is written on rectos of the leaves which are numbered by hand, and the versos are partly left blank and partly they contain carefully executed astronomical drawings and occasionally also some extra notes or calculations, probably made after the tutor had looked over the lessons. The index at the end is written on both sides of the leaves. Fine copy of a rare and interesting school manuscript.- (Binding sl. rubbed, top of spine sl. worn).

Large engraved illustration on title depicting Europe, who is mourning the disasters which will follow the comet, such as death, war, fire, etc. (8) pp. Second, enlarged edition of a pamphlet on the apparition of a comet. The first edition was published only a few days after the first sighting on November 27, 1618. The comet is described in all its details, and warnings are given for future disasters. Several other comets from the past and their following disasters are described, beginning with one appearing when God created the world - which was supposed to be 3780 B.C. -, until the horrible comet of 1577, which was also seen in the Netherlands, followed by several bloody wars. The author emphasizes that a comet, as seen in 1618, must be a sign of God's wrath. On the last page an addition is added, describing the comet from December 17 until December 30. Small 4to. 215 mm. Signatures: A-H, K-S4. Sig. I reserved for a map of the world, which is not present, though there is a Xerox reproduction of the map. Large woodcut of a globe in a stand illustrates the title. Over 100 woodcut illustrations, maps, plans, initials, etc. The rare original revolving diagrams (volvelles) are in good condition and complete. They appear on verso of leaf 9, and on recto of leaves 11, 28 and 49. Several even include the old strings for calculations attached to the large woodcuts with woodcut tabs on the leaf verso. Latin text throughout. On the title is a small early manuscript ownership that appears to read: Nicolas Caesarii Walonsansis et amicorm. Neat modern full vellum binding. Hardbound. Very Good. Petrus Apianus (1495-1552), was a German humanist, known for his works in mathematics, astronomy and cartography. Born as Peter Bienewitz (or Bennewitz) in Leisnig in Saxony. He was educated at the Latin school in Rochlitz; and then he studied at the University of Leipzig (1516-1519). During this time, he Latinized his name to Apianus (apis in Latin means "bee"; "Biene" is the German word for bee). In 1519, Apianus moved to Vienna and continued his studies at the University of Vienna, which was considered one of the leading universities in geography and mathematics. In 1527 he was called to the University of Ingolstadt as a mathematician and printer. His print shop started small. Among the first books he printed were the writings of Johann Eck, an antagonist of Martin Luther's, but he became best known for his high-quality editions of geographic and cartographic works. His accomplishments as a scientific scholar were also significant: he suggested measuring Lunar distances for determining geographical length; in his observation of Halley's Comet he discovered that the tail of the Comet always turns away from the Sun. Apian developed sundials, volvelles, astronomical and geodetic instruments, as well as a height quadrant and introduced a device to solve spherical trigonometric problems. Rainer Gemma Frisius (1508-1555) was a physician, astronomer and cartographer. He published important contributions to geography and cartography. He developed a method for determining longitude, and proposed the use of a precise travel clock to determine the longitude by comparing the displayed time and the local time. The present 'Cosmographia' is also a significant Americanum, with Apian's description of the new world on folio 30.
