Da allora il quadro generale è profondamente mutato, ed è mutato il linguaggio dei cosmologi: "pulsar", "quasar", "stelle di neutroni", "buchi neri" solo in questi ultimi anni sono entrati a far parte del vocabolario scientifico. Quasi pressata dall'abbondanza di dati sperimentali, sempre più la cosmologia ricerca l'apporto chiarificatore di altre scienze, prima fra tutte la fisica relativistica, e al tempo stesso le mette in discussione e ne stimola la revisione critica. Si ha l'impressione, di fronte alla grande complessità strutturale dell'universo, che quasi più che al rigore sia necessario affidarsi alla fantasia e all'intuizione. Questo dato emerge con chiarezza dal dibattito che gli autori del presente volume, dieci tra i massimi esperti mondiali, hanno aperto sui principali problemi della moderna cosmologia. Hermann Bondi, attualmente consulente del Ministero della Difesa britannico, è famoso per i suoi fondamentali contributi all'astronomia e alla cosmologia. È autore di numerose pubblicazioni, alcune delle quali sono state tradotte in italiano: Teorie cosmologiche rivali (1965), La relatività e il senso comune (1965), Cosmologia (1970). John Peach è membro del Brasenose College di Oxford. Martin Ryle è direttore dell'Osservatorio radioastronomico Mullard di Cambridge. Premio Nobel per la fisica nel 1974. "Just as Copernicus had detroned the earth as the motionless center of the universe so Herschel detroned the sun."Asimov. - In this paper he tries to estimate the speed of the sun's motion.In a memoir published in 1783 Herschel had been occupied with the possibility that the sun was moving relative to the stars. "More than 20 years later 1805 in the paper offered Herschel took up the question again using six of the brightest stars in a collection of the proper motions of 36 published by Maskelyne in 1790 which were much more reliable than any earlier ones and employing more elaborate processes of calculation; again the apex was placed in the constellation of Hercules though at a distance of nearly 30 degr. from the position given in 1783.
