Zurich: Bruno Bischofberger 1969.

LeWitt’s second “autonomous†artist’s book – i.e. not connected to an exhibition or part of another publication. This is one of 1000 copies printed all of which were numbered ours is no. 924 there were also 500 copies signed by LeWitt.

49 three-part variations… was published by the Zurich gallerist Bruno Bischofberger with whom LeWitt had his first solo presentation in February-March 1968. Bischofberger along with Konrad Fischer and Heiner Friedrich was one of the earliest European gallerists to engage and collaborate with LeWitt and other Conceptual artists.

“Following Serial Project #1 ‘The Xerox Book’ and Set II A I-24 Sol LeWitt’s fourth book is 49 Three-Part Variations… which was published in 1969 and is large and oblong in shape its proportions being two squares wide by one square high. This doubling of the square format is approximately repeated with other books such as Schematic Drawings for Muybridge II 1964 of 1970 Open Geometric Structures… of 1979 and All Four Part Combinations of Six Geometric Figures of 1980. In each case the horizontal format is dictated by the content. 49 Three-Part Variations… is the second of LeWitt’s autonomous artist's books and again is not an exhibition catalogue but more a catalogue of forms.â€â€“Clive Phillpot “Sol LeWitt’s Books: Complete & Incomplete†in Booktrek: Selected Essays on Artists’ Books 1972-2010 2013 p. 261.

A near fine copy; some discoloration from sunning to the upper wrapper and a few inoffensive marks to the spine internally pristine.

⧠Maffei & de Donno Sol LeWitt: Artists’ Books 2009 p. 31.

Sol LeWitt: Libros El concepto como arte 2014 4 pictured p. 57. unknown

Brick Wall signed presentation copy
New York : Tanglewood Press 1977. Quarto lettered card wrappers pp. 30 photographic illustrations of a brick wall at different times of day in different light. Presentation copy signed and inscribed on the title page in pencil 'For William Sol Lewitt'. A fine copy. 'As a co-founder of Printed Matter in the 1970s Lewitt was a crucial proponent of the artist book as a legitimate and compelling artistic medium advocating the fact that it provides artists with a relatively inexpensive means of exposing their work to a diverse and expansive audience. The artist book became a critical part of Lewitt’s own practice which in many ways focused on deconstructing notions of individual authorship and working collaboratively with other individuals to produce the final work. This book of thirty black and white photographs of a brick wall at different times of the day reflects Lewitt’s interest in Edward Muybridge’s photographic studies of humans and animals in motion as well as his ongoing investigation of serial systems and modular repetition.' - Printed Matter website https://www.printedmatter.org/catalog/tables/74/842 Copies are held major collections of artists books including at The Met the National Gallery of Australia Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Four Basic Kinds of Straight Lines
16 black & white plates. 32 pp. Square 4to 200 x 200 mm. orig. illustrated semi-stiff wrappers spine sunned & a trifle stained staple-bound. London: Studio International 1969.

One of LeWitt’s earliest artist’s books remarkably well-preserved. This is the artist’s fifth book but the third standalone publication not originating from an exhibition or periodical. It is now scarce on the market.

“The front cover of Four Basic Kinds of Straight Lines is an exemplary statement of the compositional elements: vertical lines horizontal lines and the two sets of diagonal lines. The proportions are immaculate. The back cover in turn states the narrative: one square with lines in one direction a second with two kinds of lines overlaid a third with three kinds and the fourth with all kinds superimposed; it too is superbly clear and perfectly designed…

“The first page of the book after the cover reveals a grid of 16 squares and functions rather like a contents page. Fifteen of the squares declare the elements of the work: the four basic kinds of lines the six combinations of two kinds of line the four combinations of three lines and the single square with all four lines. The 16th square contains the title of the work. This is comparable to a magician showing their audience that they have nothing up their sleeve before they begin their act. In LeWitt’s case he proceeds from this introductory page to show us exactly what was prefigured on the contents page except that each of the 15 components is now blown up and bled off one to a page. But while there is therefore no surprise there is magic. This magic lies in the completeness of the scenario its simplicity and clarity its capacity for re-enactment the beauty of its design and execution and the perfect physical qualities of the book…This book like much of LeWitt’s art has a stability also a rightness. Nothing can be or needs to be taken away; it is a clear and beautiful expression of his idea.â€â€“Clive Phillpot “Sol LeWitt’s Books: Complete & Incomplete†in Booktrek: Selected Essays on Artists’ Books 1972-2010 2013 pp. 261-62.

A near fine copy; faint wear to the extremities and some discoloration to the spine.

⧠G. LEWITT, Sol (1928-2007)
Geometric Figures & Color
New York: Harry N. Abrams 1979. A near-fine copy in a like jacket pale stain to cloth on upper panel the jacket with minute wear. Square 4to 8 x 8 inches; 203 x 203 mm. 48 pages. Full-page color offset prints. Original cloth; dust jacket. FIRST EDITION inscribed by Lewitt on the front free endpaper in pencil to "Ann." Uncommon in the cloth-bound issue and especially so when signed.

Lewitt conceptually explores: "Circle Square Triangle Rectangle Trapezoid and Parallelogram in Red Yellow and Blue on Red Yellow and Blue." The book is divided into three sections each of which differ by background color. Barbara M. Reise wrote that "LeWitt's colours like his lines and squares are like 'facts': they are inert pre-established accepted and un-emotional man-made constructs which can 'come to life' within a present context but do not necessarily do so. Red yellow blue and black and the white of wall or paper are standard "absolute primaries basic to all pigment colour – that is according to the colour system accepted by an art academic from early 19th-century theorists like Chevreul. Unlike the Newtonian rainbow-spectrum based on light-waves this theoretical structure is more conceptually mathematical and tautological than referential to some exterior and inhuman Nature. LeWitt's use of these colours is as flatly complete physical and self-reflective as the theory itself. Unlike Seurat whose use of the same colour theories was subordinated and interrelated to other interests in proportion theories and seen scene subject-matter LeWitt uses colour as both the subject and the object of his art" in: 'Sol Lewitt Critical Texts' ed.
