‎* Sehr seltene, komplette Dokumentation zu dieser epochalen Ausstellung. Durchaus auch sehr interessant durch die umfangreich vorhandenen Werbe- und Firmenanzeigen !!! ---- Als Ideengeber galt der Abgeordnete und Oberregierungsrat Julius von Diefenbach (1835-1917). Leitende Köpfe waren ferner bekannte Stuttgarter Bürger wie Karl Kölle (Stadtbaurat und Leiter des städtischen Tiefauamtes), Theodor Erhard (Leiter des Elektrizitätswerkes) und Paul Stotz (1850-1899) u.a. Fabrikant elektrischer Haushaltsapparaturen. Die Elektrotechnik fungierte als Zugpferd der Ausstellung. --- Der industrielle Umbruch war in Stuttgart Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts in vollem Gange. Fortschritt hielt auf allen Ebenen des Lebens Einzug. Da war es nur folgerichtig, dass in Stuttgart eine bedeutende Leistungsschau diese technischen Veränderungen auch der Bevölkerung präsentieren sollte. Die große ?Ausstellung für Elektrotechnik und Kunstgewerbe?, die von 6. Juni bis Anfang Oktober 1896 stattfand, war wahrlich eine Superlative an neuester Ingenieurskunst und kunstgewerblicher Moderne. Elektrizität war in der Residenzstadt Stuttgart zum Zeitpunkt der Ausstellung noch nicht weit verbreitet. Das erste zentrale Kraftwerk wurde 1894-1896 in der Marienstraße gebaut und die Pläne der Technischen Werke Stuttgart (TWS) eines Wasserkraftwerks bei Marbach am Neckar waren noch nicht umgesetzt. Einzelne Stuttgarter Firmen preschten voran: Der Pionier und spätere Vertreter der AEG, Paul Reisser, hat in der familieneigenen Elektrotechnik-Firma Wilhelm Reisser am Wilhelmsplatz 1882 die erste durch eine Gasmaschine angetriebene Blockstation gebaut, mit der 30 Glühbirnen mit Strom versorgt werden konnten. Es sollen sogar die ersten Glühbirnen in Deutschland gewesen sein, die hier in Stuttgart leuchteten. Es folgten 1883 das Hoftheater und die Wartesäle und Bahnsteige des Stuttgarter Bahnhofs, die mit elektrischem Licht ausgestattet wurden. Auch am Königshof hielt das elektrische Licht Einzug. Elektrizität galt zunächst als Luxus und war in Privathaushalten noch nicht gebräuchlich. Die traditionsbewussten Bürger mussten erst noch für den modernen Fortschritt begeistert werden, den die Elektrizität versprach. .Aussteller aus ganz Württemberg, die in irgendeiner Form etwas mit Kunstgewerbe oder Elektrotechnik zu tun hatten, waren auf der Ausstellung von vertreten. Als Ausstellungsgelände war das Gebiet zwischen dem Stadtgarten und dem im Rahmen der Ausstellung eingeweihten Landesgewerbemuseum , dem heutigen Haus der Wirtschaft, ausgewiesen. Der Prunkbau im Neo-Renaissance-Stil sollte ein zentraler Ausstellungsort sein. Den zwei Themen der Ausstellung, Kunstgewerbe und Elektrotechnik, wurden getrennte Ausstellungsflächen zugewiesen. Die Kunstgewerbeausstellung fand im Landesgewerbemuseum, die Elektroausstellung in der Gewerbe- und Maschinenhalle und dem Gewerbedorf inklusive Gartenausstellung im Stadtgarten statt. Um die Bürger sanft an den rasanten Fortschritt der neuen Technik heranzuführen wurde ein Trick angewandt: Die modernen Ausstellungsinhalte wurden in historischer Kulisse inszeniert, sozusagen im traditionellen Idyll zur allgemeinen Beruhigung präsentiert. Durch die Vereinigung des rückwärtsgewandten Sujets mit den modernen Ausstellungsinhalten sollte es dem Besucher der Ausstellung erleichtert werden, die neue Technik zu akzeptieren. Nun wollen wir aber einen raschen Rundgang durch die ?Elektrische? wagen, wie die Ausstellung im Volksmund genannt wurde. (Quelle: Stadtarchiv Stuttgart).‎
