Nei «programmi» di grandi matematici - Hilbert, Klein o Langtands - i concetti sono i protagonisti di una fiaba che combina nuove idee in moduli ricorrenti, quelle tecniche del ragionamento che sono nate dalla retorica e dalla poesia greca. Per la geometria usava una battuta fortunata: "Invece di punti, rette,piani' dobbiamo ugualmente poter dire 'tavoli, sedie, boccali di birra'". La sua ricerca ha comportato, in lunghi anni di lavoro e di polemiche, la trasformazione della logica in una scienza matematica: è questa l'eredità più duratura che ci ha lasciato, insieme ai nuovi metodi matematici della fisica, essenziali per la meccanica quantistica.
