‎First printing of Jacobi's paper (Sur l'elimination ...) in which ""he showed how to reduce a general three-body problem - that of the motion of two planets about the Sun - to a problem of the motion of two fictive bodies. ‎First printing of these two papers influential papers by Jacobi published in the epoch-making year 1848.""In the revolutionary year of 1848 Jacobi became involved in a political discussion in the Constitutional Club. During an impromptu speech he made some imprudent remarks which brought him under fire from monarchists and republicans alike. Hardly two years before, in the dedication of volume I of his Opuscula mathematica to Friedrich Wilhelm IV, he had expressed his royalist attitude"" now he had become an object of suspicion to the government. A petition of Jacobi’s to become officially associated with the University of Berlin, and thus to obtain a secure status, was denied by the ministry of education. Moreover, in June 1849 the bonus on his salary was retracted. Jacobi, who had lost his inherited fortune in a bankruptcy years before, had to give up his Berlin home. He moved into an inn and his wife and children took up residence in the small town of Gotha, where life was considerably less expensive."" (DSB).‎

‎First printing of the very first issue of the influential mathematical journal ""Mathematische Annalen"" containing Camille Jordan famous paper on Galois group theory. ""When Jordan started his mathematical career, Galois's profound ideas and results (Which had remained unknown to most mathematicians until 1845) were still very poorly understood. Jordan was the first to embark on a systematic development of the theory of finite groups and of its applications in the directions opened by Galois. Chief among his first results were the concept of composition series and the first part of the famous Jordan-Hölder theorem, proving the invariance of the system of indexes of consecutive groups in any composition series (up to their ordering). He also was the first to investigate the structure of the general linear group and of the ""classical"" groups over a prime finite field, and he very ingeniously applied his results to a great range of problems" in particular, he was able to determine the structure of the Galois group of equations having as roots the parameters of some well-known geometric configurations (the twenty-seven lines on a cubic surface, the twentyhypheneight double tangents to a quartic, the sixteen double points of a Kummer surface, and so on).Another problem for which Jordan's knowledge of these classical groups was the key to the solution, and to which he devoted a considerable amount of effort from the beginning of his career, was the general study of solvable finite groups. From all we know today (in particular about p groups. a field which was started, in the generation following Jordan, with the Sylow theorems) it seems hopeless to expect a complete classification of all solvable groups which would characterize each of them, for instance by a system of numerical invariants. Perhaps Jordan realized this" at any rate he contented himself with setting up the machinery that would automatically yield all solvable groups of a given order n."" (DSB)""There have been few mathematicians with personalities as engaging as that of Galois, who died at the age of twenty years and seven months from wounds received in a mysterious duel. He left a body of work-for the most part published posthumously less than 100 pages, the astonishing richness of which was revealed in the second half of the nineteenth century. Far from being a cloistered scholar, this extraordinarily precocious and exceptionally profound genius had an extremely tormented life. A militant republican, driven to revolt by the adversity that overwhelmed him and by the incomprehension and disdain with which the scientific world received his works, to most of his contemporaries he was only a political agitator. Yet in fact, continuing the work of Abel, he produced with the aid of group theory a definitive answer to the problem of the solvability of algebraic equations, a problem that had absorbed the attention of mathematicians since the eighteenth century"" he thereby laid one of the foundations of modern algebra. The few sketches remaining of other works that he devoted to the theory of elliptic functions and that of Abelian integrals and his reflections. on the philosophy and methodology of mathematics display an uncanny foreknowledge of modern mathematics.""‎

‎First publication of Killing's seminal paper in which he laid the foundation of a structure theory for Lie algebras.""In particular he classified all the simple Lie algebras. His method was to associate with each simple Lie algebra a geometric structure known as a root system. He used linear transformation, to study and classify root systems, and then derived the structure of the corresponding Lie algebra from that of the root system.""(Companion Encyclopedia of the History and Philosophy of the Mathematical Sciences)Unfortunately for Killing a myth arose that his work was riddled with error, which later has been proved untrue. ""As a result, many key concepts that are actually due to Killing bear names of later mathematicians, including ""Cartan subalgebra"", ""Cartan matrix"" and ""Weyl group"". As mathematician A. J. Coleman says, ""He exhibited the characteristic equation of the Weyl group when Weyl was 3 years old and listed the orders of the Coxeter transformation 19 years before Coxeter was born.""The theory of Lie groups, after the Norwegian mathematician Sophus Lie, is a structure having both algebraic and topological properties, the two being related.‎

Library label pasted on to pasted down front free end-paper. Small library stamp to lower part of title title page and verso of title page. Very fine and clean. Pp.57-122 [Entire volume: IV, 600 pp.].‎

‎First publication of Killing's important third paper (of a total of four) in which he laid the foundation of a structure theory for Lie algebras.""In particular he classified all the simple Lie algebras.

‎First edition of these 2 papers which unifies the Euclidean and Non-Euclidean geometries, by reducing the differences to expressions of the ""distance function"", and introducing the concepts ""parabolic"", ""elliptic"" and ""hyperbolic"" for the geometries of Euclid, Riemann and of Lobatschewski, Gauss and Bolyai. He further eliminates Euclid's parallel-axiom from projective geometry, as he shows that the quality of being parallel, is not invariant under projections.Klein build his work on Cayley's ""distant measure"" saying, that ""Metrical properties are not properties of the figure per se but of the figure in relation to the absolute."" This is Cayley's idea of the general projective determination of metrics. The place of the metric concept in projective geometry and the greater generality of the latter were described by Cayley as ""Metrical geometry is part of projective geometry."" Cayley's idea was taken over by Felix Klein....It seemed to him to be possible to subsume the non-Euclidean geometries, hyperbolic and double elliptic geometry, under projective geometry by exploring Cayley's idea. He gave a sketch of his thoughts in a paper of 1871, and then developed them in two papers (the papers offered here).Klein was the first to recognize that we do not need surfaces to obtain models of non-Euclidean geometries....The import which gradually emerged from Klein's contributions was that projective geometry is really logically independent of Euclidean geometry....By making apparent the basic role of projective geometry Klein paved the way for an axiomatic development which could start with projective geometry and derive the several metric geometries from it.""(Morris Kline). The offred volumes cntains other importen mathematical papers by f.i. by Klebsch, Lipschitz, Neumann, Noether, Thomae, Gordan, Lie, Du Bois-Raymond, Cantor (Über trigonometrische Reihen),etc.(Sommerville: Bibliography of Non-Euclidean Geometry p. 45 a. 49.)‎
