Dans laquelle les choses sont démontrées selon l'ordre geometrique, et l'annalyse rendue beaucoup plus facile, et traittée plus à fonds que l'on a fait jusqu'ici.‎

‎Édition originale de ce texte dû à Jean Prestet (1648-1691), dans lequel ce mathématicien qui fut lélève de Nicolas Malebranche (1638-1715) donne la première démonstration (page 368) de la "règle des signes" que Descartes avait énoncé sans justification dans sa Géométrie en 1637. Leibnitz avait bien indiqué un élément de démonstration, mais il ne la donna pas réellement. Prestet reconnu que sa propre démonstration était insuffisante et il fallut attendre 1828 et les travaux de Gauss avant d'en avoir une démonstration plus poussée. Jean Prestet originaire de Chalon-sur-Saône, était un prêtre oratorien et mathématicien. Dans ses « Éléments de mathématiques », son uvre majeure, il cherche à fonder les mathématiques sur larithmétique et lalgèbre plutôt que sur la géométrie. Prestet a passé sa jeunesse à composer son ouvrage, sous la direction de Malbranche (de 1670 à 1675). Le Privilège est daté du 27 septembre 1672, l'enregistrement du 21 octobre 1675 et l'achevé d'imprimer du 20 novembre 1675. L'ouvrage est dédié au Supérieur général de l'Oratoire, A. de Sainte- Marthe, et la dédicace signée J. P., alors que le titre ne comporte aucun nom d'auteur. Louvrage est divisé en deux parties : la première traite des opérations arithmétiques et algébriques sur les nombres entiers, les fractions, les puissances, les radicaux, ainsi que les proportions et certaines de leurs applications (comme la règle de compagnie), et les logarithmes. La seconde partie explique ce que Prestet appelle les fondements de l'analyse, c'est-à-dire la théorie algébrique des équations, l'analyse diophantienne, et contient aussi un chapitre de combinatoire. Le texte est illustré de 2 tableaux dépliants. Prestet produisit une seconde édition en 1689, puis une troisième en 1701. Son uvre manuscrite est totalement disparue. On a mention d'un traité de géométrie par la correspondance entre Malebranche et Charles René Reyneau (1656-1728). Le seul autographe de sa main connu des historiens est sa lettre à Leibniz de 1675. Bel exemplaire de cet important traité, conservé dans sa reliure dépoque. 1 vol 4to.(250 x 180 mm.) of: [8] ff. ; 418 pp. ; 2 folding tables. Original edition of this work due to Jean Prestet (1648-1691), in which this mathematician who was the student of Nicolas Malebranche (1638-1715) gives the first demonstration (page 368) of the "rule of signs" that Descartes had stated without justification in his Geometry in 1637. Leibnitz had clearly indicated a demonstration element, but he did not really give it. Prestet recognized that his own demonstration was insufficient and it was not until 1828 and Gauss's work before having a further demonstration. Jean Prestet native of Chalon-sur-Saone, was an oratorian priest and mathematician. In his "Elemens de Mathematiques", his major work, he seeks to base mathematics on arithmetic and algebra rather than geometry. Prestet spent his youth composing his work, under the direction of Malbranche (from 1670 to 1675). The Privilege is dated September 27, 1672, the recording of October 21, 1675 and the completed printing of November 20, 1675. The work is dedicated to the Superior General of the Oratory, A. de Sainte-Marthe, and the dedication signed JP, while the title has no author name. The work is divided into two parts : the first deals with arithmetic and algebraic operations on numbers, integers, fractions, powers, radicals, as well as proportions and some of their applications (such as the rule of companionship), and logarithms. The second part explains what Prestet calls the foundations of analysis, that is to say the algebraic theory of equations, the Diophantine analysis, and also contains a chapter of combinatorics. The text is illustrated with two fold. tables. Prestet produced a second edition in 1689, then a third in 1701. His manuscript work has totally disappeared. There is mention of a treatise on geometry by him in the correspondence between Malebranche and Charles Rene Reyneau (1656-1728). The only autograph of his hand known to historians is his letter to Leibniz of 1675. Fine copy of this important treatise, preserved in its period binding.‎
