‎Bhascara Acharya, Translator : John Taylor‎

‎Lilawati : or a Treatise on Arithmetic and Geometry [Hardcover]‎

‎About The Book : An important mathematician and astronomer in medieval India, Bhascara Acharya (1114-85) wrote treatises on arithmetic, algebra, geometry and astronomy. He is also believed to have been head of the astronomical observatory at Ujjain, which was the leading centre of mathematical sciences in India. Forming part of his Sanskrit magnum opus Siddhanta Shiromani, the present work is his treatise on arithmetic, including coverage of geometry. It was first published in English in 1816 after being translated by the East India Company surgeon John Taylor (d.1821). Used as a textbook in India for centuries, it provides the basic mathematics needed for astronomy. Topics covered include arithmetical terms, plane geometry, solid geometry and indeterminate equations. Of enduring interest in the history of mathematics, this work also contains Bhascara's pictorial proof of Pythagoras' theorem. About The Translator : John Taylor M.D. (d. 6 December 1821, Shiraz) was a Scottish missionary in Gujarat, then a government surgeon in Bombay. He translated Bhaskaracharya's Lilavati into English (Bombay, 1816).He died in 1821 at Shiraz, Persia where he had gone for the benefit of his health. Elected on 4-1-1809. (Proposed by W. Carey and seconded by W. Hunter on 7-12-1808). Dr. John Taylor, MD, Edinburgh 1804, was a Missionary attached to the London Missionary Society, at Madras in 1805-07. He was appointed Acting Assistant Surgeon, Bombay, on 26 March 1807 and the appointment was confirmed by the Court of Directors on 26 March 1809. He was promoted Surgeon on 28 Sept. 1821 and died at Shiraz on 6 December 1821. He translated Bhaskaracharya's "Lilawati: or a treatise on arithmetic and geometry" and published it from Bombay in 1816.; Notes and queries 1858 "Soon afterwards he went to Bombay, and continued there till nearly the time of his death, which took place towards the end of 1821 at Shiraz in Persia, whither he had gone shortly before for the benefit of his health. He was never resident at Bussorah, nor indeed, so far as the writer of this is informed, was he ever employed out of the medical service at Bombay, except, perhaps, as translator or interpreter to the Recorder's Court there."‎

‎About the Book:-History of Hindu Mathematics: A Source Book is a treatise on the history of Indian mathematics. Originally published in two parts in 1930's. Part 1 of the book is divided into chapters. Chapter 1 gives details of the various methods employed by the Hindus for denoting numbers. The chapter also contains details of the gradual evolution of the decimal place value notation in India. Chapter 2 deals with arithmetic in general and it contains the details of various methods for performing the arithmetical operations using a "board". The evolution of the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, squaring, cubing, and the extraction square root and cube root are all discussed in detail. The whole of Part 2, running to about 307 pages, constitutes just one chapter numbered as Chapter 3 of the book. Some of the topics discussed in this chapter are linear equations with one unknown and with two unknowns, quadratic equations, linear indeterminate equations, solutions of equations of the form Nx2 + 1 = y2, indeterminate equations of higher degrees, and rational triangles. About the Author:- Bibhutibhushan Datta (1888 –1958) was a historian of Indian mathematics. He was a student of Ganesh Prasad, studied at University of Calcutta and secured the master's degree in mathematics in 1914 and doctorate degree in 1920 in applied mathematics. He taught at Calcutta University where he was lecturer at University Science College, and during 1924–1929 he was Rhashbehari Ghosh Professor of Applied Mathematics. During the 1920s and 1930s he created a reputation as an authority on the history of Indian mathematics. He was also deeply interested in Indian philosophy and religion. In 1929 he retired from his professorship and left the university in 1933, and became a sannyasin (an ascetic, a person who has renounced worldly pleasures) in 1938 under the name Swami Vidyaranya. History of Hindu Mathematics: A Source Book, written by him jointly with Avadhesh Narayan Singh (1901–1954) became a standard reference in the history of Indian mathematics. He also wrote a monograph on the Shulba Sutras. He published more than 70 research papers mostly related to history of Indian mathematics.
