‎Théorie des fonctions analytiques, contenant les principes du calcul différentiel, dégagés de toute considération d'infiniment petits ou d'évanouissans, de limites ou de fluxions et réduits à l'analyse algébrique des quantités finies. - [FOUNDATION OF ANALYSIS]‎

‎Paris, De L'Imprimerie de la République, An V (1797). 4to. Uncut and partially unopened. Contemporary manuscript-binding. Provenance: With the exlibris of Stillman Drake - one of the most renown Galileo scholars. Some light brown spotting through out. Otherwise a very good copy. (4),VIII,276 pp.‎

‎First edition, first printing. Several bibliographies mention that there are two issues of the first edition, with no priority established - one with 277 numbered pages and another with 276 numbered pages which compromises Vol. III of the ninth cahier of the 'Journal de l'Ecole Polytechnique' (see Norman 1258 for example). However, the second mentioned printing was first published in 1801 (See Prof. Craig G. Fraser's article in ""Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics 1640-1940"", pp. 258-276).Lagrange is the great formulizer of his time. In his masterpiece 'Méchanique Analytique' from 1788 he freed Newtonian mechanics from synthetic and geometrical reasoning by reducing the theory of mechanics and the art of solving problems in that field to the mere solution of general formulas. In this work, the 'Théorie des fonctions analytiques', Lagrange attempted to give calculus an algebraic foundation and avoid the employment of infinitely small quantities. In this work Lagrange developed a systematic foundation of the calculus. Throughout the eighteenth century a critical attitude had developed both within mathematics and within general scientific culture. Bishop George Berkeley had already in 1734 in his work 'The Analyst' called attention to what he perceived as logical weaknesses in the reasonings of the calculus arising from the employment of infinitely small quantities. And by the end of the century a growing interest in the foundations of analysis was reflected in the decisions of the academies of Berluin and Saint Petersburg to devote prize competitions to the metaphysics of the calculus and the nature of the infinite. In Original contributions: Lagrange's conception of theorem-proving in analysis" his derivation of what is today called the Lagrange remainder in the Taylor expansion of a function his formulation of the multipiler rule in the calculus of variations and his account of sufficiency questions in the calculus of variations.Barchas 1198. ‎First edition of these two important papers. In the first paper ""Sur une Nouvelle Espece de Calcul..."" he made the most ambitious attempt to rebuild the foundation of the calculus. The paper is in fact an outline of his ""Theorie des functions"", issued later in 1797.""This work greatly impressed Lacroix, Condorcet and Laplace. Based on the analogy between powers of biniminals and differentials, it is one of the sources of the symbolic calculuses of the nineteenth century. A typical example of Lagrange's thinking as an analyst in this sentence taken form the memoir: ""Although the principle of the analogy (between powers and diffrentials) is nor self-evident, nevertheless, since the conclusions drawn from it are not thereby less exact, I shall make use of it to discover various theorems...""""(Jean Itard in DSB). The second paper ""Sur la Forme...""When D'Alembert red the paper he gave the following respons:""Your demonstration on imaginary roots seem to me to leave nothing to be desired, and I am very much obliged to you for the justice you have rendered to mine, which, in fact, has the minor fault (pwerhaps more apparant than real) of not being direct, bu which is quite simple and easy. D'Alembert was alluding to his Cause de vents (1747).""(DSB).‎

‎Leipzig, Grosse & Gleditsch, 1697. 4to. No wrappers. In: ""Acta Eruditorum Anno MDCXCVII"", No V, May-issue. Pp. 193-240 (entire issue offered). With titlepage to the volume 1697. Leibniz: pp. 201-205. Johann Bernoulli: pp. 206-211. Jacob Bernoulli: pp. 211-214. Newton: pp. 223-224. As usual, some leaves with browning.‎

‎First appearance of the famous issue of Acta Eruditorum in which the 4 solutions by the 4 most eminent mathematicians at the time, were printed together. There were in all 5 solutions to the posed problem, and Newton's solution was first printed in the Philosophical Transactions (January 1697) and reprinted here. The solution proposed by L'Hopital, not printed here, was not published until 1988.The brachistochrone problem was posed by Johann Bernoulli in Acta Eruditorum in June 1696. He introduced the problem as follows: ""I, Johann Bernoulli, address the most brilliant mathematicians in the world. Nothing is more attractive to intelligent people than an honest, challenging problem, whose possible solution will bestow fame and remain as a lasting monument. Following the example set by Pascal, Fermat, etc., I hope to gain the gratitude of the whole scientific community by placing before the finest mathematicians of our time a problem which will test their methods and the strength of their intellect. If someone communicates to me the solution of the proposed problem, I shall publicly declare him worthy of praise."" Johann Bernoulli and Leibniz deliberately tempted Newton with this problem. It is not surprising, given the dispute over the calculus, that Johann Bernoulli had included these words in his challenge:- ....""there are fewer who are likely to solve our excellent problems, aye, fewer even among the very mathematicians who boast that [they]... have wonderfully extended its bounds by means of the golden theorems which (they thought) were known to no one, but which in fact had long previously been published by others.""According to Newton's biographer Conduitt, he solved the problem in an evening after returning home from the Royal Mint. Newton: ... ""in the midst of the hurry of the great recoinage, did not come home till four (in the afternoon) from the Tower very much tired, but did not sleep till he had solved it, which was by four in the morning.""Newton send his solution to his friend Charles Montague and Montague published anonymously in the Transactions. Newton's solution, presented here in the Acta, is also anonymous. The episode did not please Newton, as he later wrote: ""I do not love to be dunned [pestered] and teased by foreigners about mathematical things ..."" After the competition Johann Bernoulli said "".... my elder brother made up the fourth of these (after Leibniz, himself and Newton), that the three great nations, Germany, England and France, each one of their own to unite with myself in such a beautiful search, all finding the same truth.""Struik (Edt.) ‎New York, American Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1959. 8vo. In the original printed blue wrappers. In ""The Bell System Technical Journal"", Volume XXXVIII, July, Number 4, 1959. Entire issue offered. Light miscolouring to spine. A fine fine and clean copy. Pp. 985-1000. [Entire issue: 909-1065 pp.].‎

‎First edition of the Lee's important paper on binary decision diagrams, a data structure that is used to represent a Boolean function. The idea was developed by Claude Shannon. The switching function is split into two sub-functions by assigning one variable. If a sub-function is considered as a sub-tree, it can be represented by a binary decision tree. Binary decision diagrams were introduced by Lee in the present paper.‎

‎Sur une généralisation de l'intégrale dérfinie. Note de H. Lebesgue, présentée par M. Picard. (Séance du Lundi 29 Avril 1901).‎

‎(Paris, Gauthier-Villars), 1901). 4to. No wrappers. In: ""Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences"", Tome 132, No 17. pp. (1013-) 1080. (Entire issue offered). Lebesgue's paper: pp. 1025-1028. Clean and fine.‎

‎First printing of Lebesgue's seminal paper on the calculus, which generalized the Riemann integral.""Building on the work of others, including that of Emile Borel and Camille Jordan, Lebesgue formulated the theory of measure in 1901 and in his famous paper Sur une generalisation de l'integrale definie, which appeared in the Comptes Rendus on 29 April 1901 (the paper offered), he gave the definition of the Lebesgue integral that generalises the notion of the Riemann integral by extending the concept of the area below a curve to include many discontinuous functions. This generalisation of the Riemann integral revolutionised the integral calculus. Up to the end of the 19th century, mathematical analysis was limited to continuous functions, based largely on the Riemann method of integration. There is a problem here, namely that a function which is not Riemann integrable may be represented as a uniformly bounded series of Riemann integrable functions. What made the new definition important was that Lebesgue was able to recognise in it an analytic tool capable of dealing with - and to a large extent overcoming - the numerous theoretical difficulties that had arisen in connection with Riemann's theory of integration.""‎

‎Leipzig: Christoph Zunkel and Bernhard Christoph Breitkopf, 1727-1739. Folio. (372x239mm). Two parts in one volume. Contemporary vellum, two cuts in spine, modern slip case. Provenance: Book plates of Arnaud de Vitry and Andras Gedeon. Stamps to half-title and title-page, from Stadtbibliothek Augsburg - sold as duplicate. First part: (14], 200, (4) pp. and 45 plates, numbered I-XLIII (plate III with volvelle). Second part: (12), 100, (94) pp. and 40 plates on 36 sheets, numbered I-XL. All plates intact. An exceptionally fine copy.‎

‎The scarce first edition of the of the eighth and tenth volumes (each volume being a complete work in itself) of Leupold's magnificent ten-volume ""Theatrum Machinarum"" - one of the first encyclopedias of technology, being the most complete and the most extensively illustrated work on mechanical engineering published hitherto. Complete sets of Leupold's Theatrum are virtually never found and Ferguson stated in his bibliography of technology that he had never seen a complete set. Each volume is complete in itself. The eighth volume is of particular interest in the history of computers, as it deals mainly with calculating machines. This volume contains detailed descriptions of the calculating machines of Schott (1668), Grillet (1673), Leibniz (1674), Poleni (1709), and Leupold himself. The tenth volume is a supplement to the series published after Leupold's death by Ernst Scheffler. It deals with odometers, gyrometers, step counters and other devices for the measurement of distances. This volume is furthermore of importance, because it contains the 90 page general index to the entire series.
