About Fairies Old And New
London: "The Children's Companion" Office 1927. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 4 colour plates plus numerous black-and-whites by H. KA. Robinson. Quarto unpaginated clothbacked pictorial paper over boards a trifle loose extremities rubbed inked name on endpaper. <br/><br/>4 colour plates plus numerous black-and-whites by H. KA. Robinson. A scarce tome. Stories on "The Fairy of Simple Joy" "The Smile of the Sea Princess" " The Magic Knitting" "The Brave Tin Soldier" & "The Little Mermaid". Robinson's artwork is quite colorful and appealing the cover art is softer and more pastel and I am guessing that Robinson was an in-house illustrator for The Children's Companion but I find no listing of him/her in the DICTIONARY OF 20TH CENTURY BRITISH ILLUSTRATORS. [ARABIAN NIGHTS].
[GERMAN PEDAGOGICAL CONCERNS IN ARABIAN NIGHTS] Die seltsamen Abenteuer des Kalifen Harun Al Raschid. Ausgew. u. hrsg. Otto Zimmermann. [Buchschm. Abb. von C. Strathmann]. ["Tausend-und-eine Nacht" Bdch. 4]. [i.e. The strange adventures of Caliph Harun Al-Raschid].
Very Good German Original wrappers. 12mo. (16 x 11 cm). In German. 71, [1] p., [12] unnumbered b/w plates. Very rare first edition (from first 1st-5th thousand impressions and both in scarce institutional holdings and market rarity) of this fourth book of "A thousand and one nights" series, titled 'The Caliph Harun Al-Rashid' with fine illustrations edited by Heinrich Wolgast, (1860-1920), a German educator and pedagogue. Close to social democratic ideology, Heinrich Wolgast became known as a literary pedagogue. He criticized a "specific" juvenile literature which, as trivial mass literature, only satisfies the need for entertainment, and called for an artistic education of the youth through aesthetically demanding literature. In 1888 Wolgast became a co-founder of the "Youth Writings Committee" of the "Association of Hamburg Elementary School Teachers". As a co-founder of the "United German Examination Committees for Youth Writings", he acted from 1896 to 1912 as the editor of the magazine "Jugendschriften-Warte". This small and very collectible book published by Otto Zimmermann reflects the pedagogical concerns rather than the true harsh, erotic, and imaginary atmosphere of the Arabian Nights. Only one printed copy in OCLC 76105214 (German National Library, Leipzig = Deutsche Nationalbibliothek, Leipzig).

[EHON - FAIRY TALES] BARBATOU, P
FABLES CHOISES DE FLORIAN
1895. EHON - FAIRY TALES BARBATOU P. FABLES CHOISES DE FLORIAN. The first volume only. Paris: Librairie Marpon & Flammarion; Tokyo: Shueisha Meiji 28 1895. Fukuro toji cord-bound in printed paper covers. This first volume is 26.6 X 19.8 cm with 14 full page color woodcuts by Kano Tomonobu and Kajita Hanko. #167 of 200 from a deluxe edition on Japanese hosho paper. Covers soiled and a bit edgeworn one cvorner chipped. The contents are very good and the impressions and colors are quite lovely. This work despite its French text may be seen as squarely in the tradition of the Japanese ehon and it shares many characteristics of the revival of picture book printing in mid to late Meiji demonstrated by other works: an emerging Nihonga style skilled printed increasingly restrained coloration etc. In that context the large scale of its illustrations renders it particularly interesting. The first volume only of two. unknown

[Fairy Tales] [Avant-Garde Illustration] Laichterova, Annuše
Království srdce: Pohadky Kingdom of the Heart
Prague: Prokop Laichter 1926. First edition. 4to 81 1pp. Illustrated initials and full page illustrations by Laichter Prokop. Publisher's cloth backed purple paper boards with large paste on illustration on front cover. Boards somewhat toned and faded around edges internally clean and bright. A near fine copy. <br /> <br /> A stunning production from the Czech painter illustrator set designer and actor Laichter Prokop 1898-1975 who was also son of the influential publisher Jan Laichter. In 1924 Prokop's first wife the author of this book Annuše died prematurely of tuberculosis and Laichter printed this book as a remembrance two years later. The introduction translates as "A few words spoken over the grave of a prematurely deceased fairy-teller." [Fairy Tales] [Washington Territory] Allen, Edward Jay
The Walls of Sand: A True Fairy Story
N.p.: Privately Printed 1885. First edition. 7x5" 19pp. Vignette on title page. String bound in beige printed card wrappers. Light chipping to edges of wraps clean internally and very good. <br /> <br /> Rare booklet from one of the early pioneers of the Puget Sound Edward Jay Allen 1830-1915. Unusual for immigrants heading west Allen was college-educated and single. He settled near Olympia in 1852 after his overland journey from Pennsylvania. Interestingly Allen negotiated with the local Native Americans to pay for the land before he took up residence. He played an important role in early surveys and road building in the area before returning east in 1855.<br /> <br /> This story likely written for his children is told by a fater to his 7-year-old and begins "Once upon a time there was a Prince." An epic battle ensues between the Fairy Godmother and the Great White King to preserve the wildflowers the Prince loved so well. "If you build these Walls of Sand around the Prince's flowers the power of the Great White King shall be naught and the flowers may bloom on forever."<br /> <br /> OCLC cites a single holding at the University of Pittsburgh and we find no mention of this booklet elsewhere. <br /> <br /> . [GERMAN BAROQUE LITERATURE - MORAL TALES] BLANCKARDO, Casparo [Caspar Blanckard]
Containing 100 exquisite charming and edifying histories both of fine virtues to be pursued and of gross vices to be avoided. With appended spiritual morals and reflections. Published for everyone's use and enjoyment. With an appendix of several humorous and entertaining stories and poems
Nürnberg: Joh. Leonhard Buggel 1706. Second edition. First published 1701; reissued by the same publisher under revised title in 1718. 12mo 125cm. 19th-c. mottled calf over marbled boards; gilt spine title; 123146pp; engraved extra-title. Pressure-stamp of a 20th-century owner to base of title page David B. Dickens. Two small ink-spots to the engraved extra-title; mild age-darkening to text but overall a very clean and attractive copy. Very Good. Text entirely in German. <br /> <br /> Uncommon collection of brief parables and humorous vignettes each intended to illustrate a particular virtue vice or crime - Rejuvenation Kindness Friendship Industry; Superstition Jealousy Fratricide Adultery etc - built around the author's conceit of a book organized as a pleasure-garden wherein "Just as a garden lover tired from office business and worries is refreshed again and.comes alive when he strolls around in his sweet-smelling flower field picking a little flower here and there.so a person recovers his spirits when he occasionally devotes an hour to reading various moral stories picking their morals as he would flowers and fruits and applying their beneficial use." from the author's Foreword; translation ours. Apparently the only published work by Caspar Blanckard to whom we can find no reference beyond his authorship of the current work. Very scarce; OCLC and KVK find only three physical locations for any edition; we note another apparently unindexed copy in the Harold Jantz Collection of at Duke University. This copy from the collection of David B. Dickens long-time professor of German Language and Literature at Washington & Lee University. Joh. Leonhard Buggel unknown
