This is one of several dozen books and periodicals from Alonzo Church's library that we were lucky enough to purchase at auction in New Jersey. Several of the books contain his signature or a presentation inscription to him. Unfortunately this copy does not have those signs of his ownership. Alonzo Church 1903 - 1995 was professor of mathematics at Princeton University 1929-1967 and of mathematics and philosophy at UCLA 1967-1990. He was the founding editor of the JOURNAL OF SYMBOLIC LOGIC. Among his most influential contributions are Church's Theorem Church's Thesis and the Lambda Calculus. His work was of major importance in mathematical logic recursion theory theoretical computer science and functional programming languages in general. Professor Church's creation of lambda calculus was the foundation for the LISP programming language and provided the semantic model for ALGOL. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences British Academy and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Church is regarded by many as the greatest American logician of the 20th century. Anyone with Internet access using a search engine like Alta Vista can find several hundred articles of highly varying quality on Godel's Theorem. Among the best things to read though is Godel's Proof by Ernest Nagel and James R. Pursuing graduate studies at Columbia University he received his Ph.D. in 1930. After a year of teaching at the City College of New York he joined the faculty of Columbia University where in 1955 he was named John Dewey Professor of Philosophy. Nagel was one of the leaders in the movement of logical empiricism conjoining Viennese positivism with indigenous American naturalism and pragmatism. In 1936 he published in the Journal of Philosophy the article "Impressions and Appraisals of Analytic Philosophy" one of the earliest sympathetic accounts of the works of Ludwig Wittgenstein Moritz Schlick and Rudolf Carnap intended for an American audience. Nagel was esteemed for his lucid exposition of the most recondite matters in logic mathematics and natural science published in essays and book reviews for professional journals scientific periodicals and literary reviews. Two of his books now out of print consisted of collections of his articles Sovereign Reason and Other Studies in the Philosophy of Science 1954 and Logic Without Metaphysics and Other Essays in the Philosophy of Science 1957. He also wrote a monograph Principles of the Theory of Probability 1939 which appeared in the International Encyclopedia of Unified Science. The binding is original brown cloth stamped in Japanese characters on the spine and front cover. This is almost certainly the very copy that Church used for his review of ZUM LOGISCHEN that was published in the JOURNAL OF SYMBOLIC LOGIC Vol. 6 No. 1 Mar. 1941 p. 36. It is one of several dozen books from Alonzo Church's personal library that we were lucky enough to purchase at auction in New Jersey. Several of the books contain his signature. Unfortunately this copy does not. But please check our inventory for others that do. From Encyclopedia.com: "In 1952 Novikov constructed a finitely defined group H with an unsolvable word problem that is a group with no algorithm to solve the word problem for H. This result was first announced in his 1952 paper �Ob algoritmicheskoi nerazreshimosti problemy tozhdestva� �On the Algorithmic Unsolvability of the Word Problem�. The complete proof was published three years later i.e. in this 1955 edition. In 1957 William W. Boone gave another example of a group with an unsolvable word problem and therefore this result is called the Novikov-Boone theorem. Important corollaries derived from this theorem have suggested that there are many unsolvable algorithmic problems in fundamental branches of classical mathematics. Gigante della logica del Novecento e tra i massimi pensatori di ogni epoca, definito dalla rivista Time «il matematico del secolo», Kurt Gödel ha legato il suo nome al celebre teorema di incompletezza, ma le sue ricerche hanno spaziato in ogni campo, dalla logica alla cosmologia e persino alla teologia, giungendo a esiti visionari e illuminanti, quando non addirittura rivoluzionari. Non a caso, le sue scoperte sono state uno strumento fondamentale per Alan Turing nella progettazione del computer. E non è un caso che a Princeton Albert Einstein cercasse la compagnia di Gödel per conversare con lui di scienza, filosofia e politica durante lunghe passeggiate quotidiane. Nel "Dio della logica", in cui compare anche un prezioso inedito tratto da una conferenza tenuta da Gödel nel 1934, Piergiorgio Odifreddi ci consegna una rigorosa biografia scientifica non priva di gustosi aneddoti e felici divagazioni filosofiche, ricostruendo l'avventura intellettuale di un genio che ebbe una brillante carriera accademica e illustri riconoscimenti in vita, ma fu anche uomo schivo, ipocondriaco e paranoico, preda di ossessioni e paure che lo tormentarono fino alla morte.

br. Impertinente, in senso letterale, è chi "non appartiene", ad esempio a una politica o a una religione, e non appartenendo, suscita i risentimenti e le stizze di coloro che, appartenendo, lo tacciano di arroganza o insolenza. Il matematico impertinente è una specie del genere, caratterizzata dal fatto di non appartenere non per partito preso ma per motivi mutuati dalla più pura razionalità esistente: quella matematica. E l'incarnazione del matematico impertinente è Piergiorgio Odifreddi che nei saggi raccolti in questo volume su politica, religione, letteratura, filosofia e scienza - dispiega l'arsenale della ragione per argomentare che non è affatto vero che non possiamo non dirci cristiani, o che siamo tutti americani, o che la cultura è solo quella mitologica e (pseudo) filosofica sulla quale vive l'informazione. Ed è invece vero che non possiamo non dirci tecnologici, che siamo tutti africani, e che la cultura è anche (o soprattutto?) quella matematica e scientifica che informa la vita.
