Discrete Logical Multiplicities. This volume was among several dozen books from Alonzo Church's library that we were lucky enough to purchase at auction in New Jersey. Several of the books contain his signature or a presentation inscription to him. Unfortunately this volume does not have those signs of his ownership. But please check our inventory for several others that do. One page does have brief margin notes that appear to be in his hand. Alonzo Church 1903 - 1995 was professor of mathematics at Princeton University 1929-1967 and of mathematics and philosophy at UCLA 1967-1990. He was the founding editor of the JOURNAL OF SYMBOLIC LOGIC. Among his most influential contributions are Church's Theorem Church's Thesis and the Lambda Calculus. His work was of major importance in mathematical logic recursion theory theoretical computer science and functional programming languages in general. Professor Church's creation of lambda calculus was the foundation for the LISP programming language and provided the semantic model for ALGOL. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences British Academy and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Church is regarded by many as the greatest American logician of the 20th century. From Wikipedia: "For Edmundo Curvelo forty years of life and ten publications were enough to mark the history of Portuguese thought; in general through work in the field of logic in particular through the endeavor to logify psychology. According to him Psychology would only gain the status of Science to the extent that it was allowed to logify because for Professor Abrantes science is a logical construction. To logify any subject is to discover the stable structures that have the language that can represent that any subject faithfully. The work he built on logic is all the more remarkable as it is known that the area of logic was not in the history of Portuguese thought an area of great development. Not to underline that at the time it was the occupation of very few. In his research area he fought the current. Professor Manuel Curado 2001 pointedly points out in the History of Portuguese Philosophical Thought that Edmundo Curvelo was the best Portuguese logician of the twentieth century and beyond: For better and worse Curvelo is the logic of the twentieth century. Contains 9 fold-out plates. 205x135mm. 864 pages. Marbled board Hardcover with brown leather gilt spine. Text block edges dyed yellow. Cover rubbed, scratched and age-stained/yellowing. Cover corners and edges bumped and worn. Spine rubbed, stained and slightly wrinkled. Spine edges slightly bumped. Spine edges and hinges slightly peeling. Pencil inscriptions and stamp on rear endpaper. Inner cover and few page (including extreme pages) age-stained. Pen inscription and two small stamps on pre-title whitepage. Plates water-stained and age-stained. Small stains on edges of last page and plates. Some pages slightly age-stained. Pages yellowing and wavy. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare introductory book on logic, written in the spirit of French Enlightenment, is overall in good condition.
