La dedica dell’autore a Francesco Maria della Rovere contiene due illustrazioni di cannone e una di uno strumento di misurazione geometrica.Edizione originale assai rara di questa prima opera stampata sulla balistica, una pietra miliare per la storia della meccanica. “Nicolo Tartalea Brisciano Mathematico Bombardiero” ebbe il merito in questa sua opera di aver posto le fondamenta per la scienza balistica, fondandola sulla geometria e l’aritmetica, e arrivando alla dimostrazione che l’efficacia maggiore in un lancio di proiettile si ottiene tirando al di sotto dell’angolo di 45°. Nel suo trattato, gettando le basi per le future ricerche di Galileo, studia problemi non solo di balistica ma anche di fortificazioni, agrimensura e ingegneria, applicando l’analisi matematica ai problemi di fisica. Tartaglia dimostra specialmente la traiettoria tenuta da un colpo sparato da una canna da fuoco, a seconda della velocità della propulsione e applicando le leggi di gravità cui il corpo va soggetto in tutta la fase del moto fino alla caduta.
