‎Edizione del 1814 di questa raccolta di veglie inedite del filologo scienziato e accademico Carlo Roberto Dati (1619-1676) allievo di Galileo e Torricelli. I giovanili interessi scientifici lo spinsero alla ricerca di una lingua che potesse trasformare il fatto scientifico in letteratura. In particolare Dati chiamò "veglie" delle composizioni che avrebbero dovuto avere il carattere di conversazioni dotte intrattenute durante le veglie notturne su questioni della lingua o su eventi scientifici ispirandosi alla formula delle Notti Attiche di Aulo Gellio. Fra queste "veglie" notevole la Dissertazione sull'utilità e diletto che reca la geometria, letta all'accademia della Crusca nel 1568, sotto forma di un dialogo tenuto adArcetri fra Galilei e un giovane fiorentino (Cfr. Wikipedia). Segue "La protezione de grandi fomenta le lettere e le lettere fanno i principi illustri". In discrete condizioni. I due tomi sono ornati da una grande e bella vignetta disegmata da I.F. DeClermont e incisa in rame da L.P. Boitard, e da grandi iniziali e finalini xilografati. Il primo tomo inoltre contiene alcune tabelle f.t., anche pi volte ripieg.Nouvelle dition, revue, correige & augmente des diverses pices imprimes & manuscrites contre le paradoxe gomtrique propos en 1728, avec le jugement des plus habiles gometres. "Seconda edizione".L'Autore il francese Louis-Bertrand Castel (!688-1757), qui entra chez les jsuites en 1703, cultiva les belles-lettres dans sa jeunesse et s'adonna ensuite tout entier aux mathmatiques et la physique. Avant l'age de 30 ans, il avait lu la plupart des mathmaticiens, et il savait bien l'histoire des mathmatiques. S'tant fait connaitre par quelques essais relatifs son gout et son gnie, ces bauches tombrent entre les mains de Fontenelle et du P. Tournemine, l'un et l'autre protecteurs des succs naissants. Ils jugrent que le P. Castel ne serait point dplac dans la capitale, et il conseillrent ses suprieurs de le faire passer de Toulouse Paris: c'tait la fin de 1720. Ds lors le P. Castel jeta dans ses ouvrages et dans le public les fondements de ses trois systemes favoris, exposs dans: le Trait de la pesanteur universelle - La Mathmatique universelle et le Clavecin oculaire. La Mathmatique.. imprime Paris ne 1728, lui valut d'etre admis dans la Socit Royale de Londres. Il fut aussi de l'Acadmie de Bordeaux, de celle de Rouen et de Lyon.Cos Biographie universelle (Paris, 1813), VII, p. 318.Con qualche lieve uniforme ingiallitura, altrimenti esemplare ben conservato.‎
