‎Première édition de cette oeuvre du mathématicien suisse Simon Antoine Jean Lhuilier de Genève. Élève de Louis Bertrand et du grand philosophe Georges Louis Lesage (apparenté), il publia durant sa vie un grand nombre de traités contribuant à la polygonométrie, polyédrométrie, isopérimétrie et surtout en analyse à l’intégrale et la dérivée. Sur invitation du prince polonais Adam Kazimierz Czartoryski, il s’établit en Pologne en tant qu’enseignant de son fils, le jeune prince. De retour en Suisse, il devient professeur de mathématique à l’Académie de Genève jusqu’à sa retraite en 1823. Cet ouvrage traite entre autres des théories de Simson sur les lieux plans, d’après Apollonius (ligne droite et cercle) et dans l’espace (sphère) etc. et contient un matériel très riche pour la partie de la géométrie citée dans le titre. Il est dédié à son ancien élève, le prince Czartoryski, en ce temps ministre de l’instruction publique du Tsar de Russie.‘L’Huillier’s last major work in first edition, appeared in 1809 in Paris and Geneva. Il s'est particulièrement intéressé aux applications de la géométrie différentielle à la physique mathématique, notamment en relativité générale. - Après des études au lycée Louis-le-Grand, à lÉcole normale supérieure et à la Faculté des sciences de Paris, où il a comme professeur de géométrie différentielle Élie Cartan, il devient agrégé de mathématiques en 1936, puis docteur ès sciences en 1939, avec une thèse sur la relativité générale. Après avoir enseigné à l'université de Strasbourg, à partir de 1941, puis à celle de Paris, à partir de 1949, il est élu en 1952 professeur titulaire de la chaire de physique mathématique du Collège de France. Il est membre du conseil d'administration de la Fondation Hugot du Collège de France de 1979 à 1987. Il prend sa retraite en 1986. On compte parmi ses élèves Edmond Bonan, Thierry Aubin, Marcel Berger, Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat, Thibault Damour, Claude Berge, Charles-Michel Marle et Yvette Kosmann-Schwarzbach. X and p. 5. � The exceedingly rare first edition of Lobachevsky's landmark work on algebra constituting the very first Russian textbook on number theory in which he reiterated all basic notions of calculus by means of finite algorithms only. Using a synthesis of geometrical and analytical systems he developed a fundamentally new approach to solving equations: the approximation of the roots of algebraic equations computing the roots of a polynomial by squaring them repeatedly a method suggested by Newton and in 1781 touched on by Euler. It is the only substantial book published by Lobachevsky the founder of non-euclidian geometry.<br><br>The majority of Lobachevsky's works on non-Euclidean geometry and other mathematical and scientific fields were confined primarily to journals and small pamphlets. This is the only comprehensive book to appear in his life-time and shows his radical approach to solving equations using a synthesis of geometrical and analytical systems. <br>Belgian G. P. Dandelin and Swiss C. H. Graeffe independently discovered the same method of squaring roots and it is often referred to as the Dandelin-Gr�ffe method. It was however proved by Alston Householder in 1959 that Lobachevskii came up with the solution first: Although Lobachevskii's work bear the date 1834 it was already in the hands of the censors in 1832 Householder: Dandelin Lobacevskii or Graeffe and most of it had been composed as early as 1825 thus Lobachevsky preceeded Dandelin and Gr�ffe by a several years. <br><br>OCLC lists only one copy at Harvard.
