br. Interamente ricomposto, l'epistolario della Stein con il filosofo Roman Ingarden. Il gran numero di lettere indirizzate da Edith Stein a Roman Ingarden e l'interesse che esse offrono hanno suggerito ai curatori della nuova collana delle Opere Complete tedesche (ESGA) di raccoglierle in un volume unico, che viene qui tradotto, come di consueto, con i ricchi apparati di note dell'edizione tedesca. Cronologicamente, queste lettere a Ingarden si situano per la massima parte nello stesso arco di tempo del volume Lettere 1 (1916-1933) - soltanto 4 lettere su 162 sono posteriori al 14 ottobre 1933, data dell'ingresso di Edith Stein al Monastero delle Carmelitane Scalze di Colonia. Il particolare legame di amicizia tra Edith Stein e Roman Ingarden dà a queste lettere un tono tutto particolare, sia che in esse si tratti di eventi personali, sia che in esse si tratti di problematiche più ampie, come quelle relative alla svolta idealistica del maestro Husserl e ai rapporti tra i suoi allievi di Gottinga e quelli di Friburgo, o al nascente interesse di Edith Stein per la metafisica. Emergono inoltre in queste lettere la partecipazione appassionata di Edith Stein agli eventi bellici e le ragioni del suo breve impegno politico, vi sono registrate le sue riflessioni sul senso della storia e sul ruolo dei popoli, nonché il suo interesse per la persona, che non verrà mai meno; non da ultimo, viene alla luce il suo intimo dibattere le "questioni religiose" e il suo confronto con Ingarden sulla sua avvenuta conversione, di fronte alla quale egli assume un atteggiamento a tratti ostile a tratti più aperto.

Il Diario del cardinale Domenico Tardini (1888-1961), relativo agli anni 1936-1944, è un documento singolare, immediato, composto sulla scorta di appunti personali e d'ufficio del celebre prelato romano. Tardini fu Sostituto della Segreteria di Stato dal 1935 ed è un testimone d'eccezione della politica vaticana negli anni dei regimi fascista e nazista e della Seconda guerra mondiale. br. Nacque nel 1647 da famiglia dell'alta borghesia. Nella sua vita claustrale di religiosa, rivestirono particolare importanza alcune apparizioni del Signore che le ispirarono la devozione al Cuore di Gesù, che si diffuse presto in tutta Europa. Morì nel 1690.
