brossura "La libertà individuale va estesa anche alle prostitute? [...] Si possono, si devono privare le prostitute della loro libertà? Esse se ne rendono indegne abbandonandosi alla sregolatezza delle loro passioni [...] hanno abdicato alle loro prerogative". Così nel 1837 il padre del "regolamentismo" francese giustificava la segregazione prostituzionale e il controllo poliziesco sulle donne che avrà dignità di legge in Italia fino al 1958, coinvolgendo lo Stato in una serie impressionante di abusi. Imbattendosi nelle loro storie dolenti e puntando alla persona più che all'ordine sociale, Anna Figus, nella Cagliari degli anni '30, aprì la prima casa delle Pie Suore della Redenzione per "additare alle anime in ombra lo splendore meraviglioso di Dio ed aiutarle a orientarsi verso di Lui". Circondate di attenzioni e di bellezza, finalmente consapevoli del proprio valore e della propria dignità, tornavano alla società persone valide e autenticamente libere, sebbene il cambiamento non fosse per Madre Anna il presupposto per rispettarle: "Le anime! Come sono belle le anime! Come sono preziose a Dio in qualunque situazione esse si trovino, in qualunque gradino di colpa siano adagiate! Avere un'anima tra le mani esige veramente lo stesso rispetto e la stessa attenzione che portare una pisside d'Ostie consacrate: anche in essa si nasconde Gesù, anche in essa v'è un mistero infinito d'amore e di misericordia che chiede di poter essere svelato!".

br. Sono ormai tantissimi nel mondo i giovani che guardano a Carlo Acutis (1991-2006) e si rifanno alla sua testimonianza. Mons.Paolo Martinelli, vescovo ausiliare di Milano, ha parlato di Carlo come di un giovane cristiano desideroso di vivere alla grande e che «ha condiviso con i giovani del suo tempo la bellezza della vita nell'adolescenza, trovando in essa un'occasione straordinaria per portare il Vangelo». Carlo che mi ha contagiato e folgorato con la sua profonda fede, la sua grande carità e la sua grande purezza, che ho sempre considerato fuori del normale, perché un ragazzo così giovane, così bello e così ricco normalmente preferisce fare una vita diversa». Diventerà così il "padre dei monaci d'Occidente", prima di essere proclamato da Paolo VI "Patrono dell'Europa cristiana". Questa biografia non si limita a narrarne la vita, ma ricostruisce anche l'importanza della sua opera per i secoli a venire.

Armida Barelli, fondatrice di quello straordinario fenomeno ecclesiale e civile che fu la Gioventù Femminile di Azione Cattolica, ebbe un impatto determinante sulle giovani della prima metà del Novecento. In questo volume ampio spazio è dato alle sue riflessioni, ai suoi scritti, alla sua attività nella Chiesa e nel mondo del suo tempo. La sua vita era anche un esempio: «Se lei ha fatto così, perché non posso farlo anch'io?», poteva dirsi ogni ragazza della grande città o del più sperduto paesino d'Italia. Le sue indicazioni erano alla portata di tutte, semplici ma profonde. Anche il linguaggio, comprensibile dalle dotte e dalle analfabete, la rendeva testimone credibile di un ideale che superava gli stretti confini della civiltà contadina che ancora imperava in Italia. E si videro miracoli. Il messaggio era avere la consapevolezza di una chiamata di Dio a far fruttificare i tanti o pochi doni elargiti a ciascuna, dentro un'esperienza di fede autentica, rendendosi conto che in ciascuno vive la Trinità e che nel contatto con Dio, fatto non solo di formule di pietà, ma di amicizia profonda, si potevano vivere le gioie e le sofferenze che la vita portava con sé. In questa relazione con Dio si potevano anche cogliere le occasioni del nuovo che si intravedeva: l'assunzione di responsabilità familiari, lavorative e sociali, e poi politiche, con cui le ragazze erano chiamate a confrontarsi. Senza cedere alle mode, anzi andando contro corrente, le ragazze stavano scrivendo una storia nuova.

Al giovane reduce, rimasto ferito gravemente, un medico prescrive di consegnare alla scrittura l'angoscia di quell'esperienza nel "vallone della morte", per tentare di liberarsene. E lo pubblica pochi mesi dopo la fine della guerra. don Aldo, nato a Montù Beccaria nel 1915, ordinato sacerdote alla vigilia del secondo conflitto mondiale, sarà amatissimo vescovo di Novara dal 1972 e uno dei protagonisti del rinnovamento del Concilio Vaticano II; si spegnerà nel 2005 nel paese di Massino Visconti affacciato sul lago Maggiore e riposa nel cimitero dell'abbazia benedettina sull'isola di San Giulio, al centro del vicino lago d'Orta. In questo libro ci fa comprendere perché "gli uomini hanno avuto paura di quell'ora che batteva sulla steppa" dove su molti di quei settantacinquemila morti ora "veglia una croce gigantesca levata sui girasoli" condividendo con noi, ieri come oggi, "lo sforzo di trovare, anche in mezzo alla burrasca, qualche raggio di luce".

br. La vita di Teresio Olivelli (1916-1945) è un percorso verso la santità, nel segno di un fortissimo impegno umano e morale. Medaglia d'oro al valore della Resistenza e Servo di Dio, per lui è in atto il processo di beatificazione. Giovane di grande intelligenza e passione umana e cristiana, formatosi nel mondo delle organizzazioni cattoliche (AC, San Vincenzo, FUCI), alunno del Collegio Ghislieri a Pavia, città dove frequentò la Facoltà di Giurisprudenza, si illuse di poter modificare il regime fascista dall'interno, dandogli un'anima di autentica giustizia umana e sociale. Durante la II guerra mondiale, volle combattere fra gli alpini sul fronte russo e visse la drammatica ritirata dell'ARMIR. Tornato in patria, chiuse i conti con il fascismo. Concepì il sogno di un'Italia «più libera, più giusta, più solidale, più "cristiana"» e vi si dedicò strenuamente, militando, nella Resistenza, fra le file delle Fiamme Verdi. Arrestato e deportato, morì in un lager nel gennaio del '45, a 29 anni, per le percosse ricevute da un Kapò che lo aveva sorpreso ad assistere un compagno malato.
