‎Une des premières histoires de la ville de Vienne, en Dauphiné, par le célèbre historien dauphinois (et viennois) Nicolas Chorier.Alors qu'il vivait encore à Vienne, Nicolas Chorier se consacra à l'histoire de sa province natale. Il annonça la publication d'une histoire du Dauphiné, par un prospectus paru en 1654. Tout en travaillant à cet ouvrage, il s'intéressa aux antiquités de sa ville natale et fit paraître ses Recherches sur les antiquités de la ville de Vienne, en 1658. Chorier se proposait de faire le même travail pour les principales cités du Dauphiné, ce qui explique que le titre de son ouvrage porte : Première partie de la topographie historique des principales villes du Dauphiné. Il n'a pas poursuivi son dessein et seul cet ouvrage a été publié. Cette première partie est donc la seule et unique qui ait paru. Enfin, revenant à son grand projet annoncé, le premier tome de l'Histoire générale de Dauphiné sortit des presses de Jean Nicolas à Grenoble en 1661.Nicolas Chorier lui-même parle plusieurs fois de son ouvrage dans ses Mémoires écrits en latin. Nous nous appuyons sur la traduction publiée par F. Crozet en 1868 à Grenoble (pp. 62-63) :« J'avais appliqué mon esprit à l'investigation des monuments antiques de Vienne dans les décombres et les ruines. Car Jean Le Lièvre n'avait certainement pas livré ce qu'il avait promis sous ce titre, dans un livre publié depuis plus de trente ans [Histoire de l'antiquité et de la saincteté de la cité de Vienne en la Gaule celtique, Vienne, Poyet, 1623]. C'était un homme de bien, mais qui n'avait pas de talent ni de sciences dans ce genre de littérature. Dans le cours de cette année, qui était l'an 1657, j'achevai cet ouvrage difficile, mais très agréable, et il vit le jour à la fin de l'année. Je démontrai que Vienne était la patrie de Claudien, poète très élégant. Je montrai le premier ce que signifiaient, dans les anciennes inscriptions de monuments sépulcraux, ces mots sub ascia dedicare, et je mis à jour beaucoup d'autres choses d'une profonde érudition. Je n'eus pas à me repentir de cette production de mes études, elle donna de l'éclat à l'histoire du Dauphiné. »Le premier auteur à consacrer une longue étude à Nicolas Chorier et à son œuvre est Jules Ollivier, dans les Mélanges biographiques et bibliographiques relatifs à l'histoire littéraire du Dauphiné, parus en 1837 : Histoire de la vie et des ouvrages de Nicolas Chorier (pp. 1-50). Il porte ce jugement sur l'ouvrage de Chorier (p. 4) : Après avoir rappelé qu'il n'existait alors que deux histoires de Vienne relatives aux archevêques, « Chorier consacra ses recherches à l'origine et à la description des monuments antiques de cette ville. Cet ouvrage, dans lequel on eût désiré que l'auteur eût déployé une critique plus rationnelle et des appréciations archéologiques plus saines, est, à tout prendre, un recueil d'inscriptions antiques et de descriptions, d'autant plus précieux que le temps a fait disparaître la plupart des monuments dont l'auteur a consacré le souvenir, et ce n'est pas avec assez de justice que l'ont jugé quelques écrivains modernes. » Il donne ensuite une bibliographie des différentes éditions des Recherches.Edition originaleL'édition originale est :Recherches du Sieur Chorier sur les Antiquitez de la ville de Vienne, métropole des Allobroges, capitale de l'empire romain dans les Gaules, des deux Royaumes de Bourgogne et présentement du Dauphiné. Recueil de textes d'auteurs anciens traitant de la ville de Vienne.- Les 5 livres occupent les pages 1 à 504. Une erreur de pagination fait que les pages 505 à 514 sont numérotées 495 à 504. Contrairement à ce que l'on pourrait comprendre, cette histoire couvre toute la période jusqu'à Louis XIII et pas seulement l'antiquité au sens strict. Une attention particulière est portée aux monuments anciens et modernes et aux inscriptions antiques, dont le texte est donné dans l'ouvrage.- Errata (3 pp. non chiffrées).Les 71 pages de Dissertations et Témoignages semblent manquer dans certains exemplaires (BM Lyon, BMG).Edition de 1659Il s'agit de l'édition de l'exemplaire présenté dans cette page.Dans cette édition de 1659, seule la date a été changée et la dédicace aux Consuls de Vienne a été supprimée. D'après Jules Ollivier, cette dédicace n'a été supprimée que dans quelques exemplaires, au moyen d'un faux titre. Il précise, contre l'avis de N.-F. Cochard, que cette édition est en tout point identique à l'édition de 1658 et ne peut donc être considérée comme une deuxième édition. La comparaison entre l'exemplaire de l'édition de 1658, numérisé par la BNF, et cet exemplaire donne raison à Jules Ollivier. Elles sont en tous points identiques, à la date près. Même les erreurs d'impressions et l'erreur de pagination n'ont pas été corrigées.‎
