A very scarce group of promotional photographs issued by the Goodyear Corp. in the 1920’s detailing their 1600 & 2300 cubic foot pocket-sized barrage balloons with rigid fins. The Badminton Library of Sports and Pastimes was an ambitious sports publishing project conceived by Henry Somerset 8th Duke of Beaufort the name derived from the Duke's country house Badminton and dedicated to the Prince of Wales 'one of the best and keenest sportsmen of our time'. Between 1885 and 1902 some 33 separate works were published each profusely illustrated detailing the history and details of the sporting activity in question. Following the death of Fitzroy James Henry Somerset 1st Baron Raglan 1788-1855 commander of allied forces during the Crimean War 1623 of his friends admirers and comrades purchased the estate of Cefntilla Court in Monmouthshire Wales presenting the home to Richard Somerset 2nd Baron Raglan 1817-1884 and his heirs in perpetuity as a memorial in remembrance of his father's contribution to the British military. . Weir Mitchell's literary work for adults. Printed anonymously in the Atlantic Monthly this is the fictional account of a Civil War assistant surgeon who had lost all of his limbs in battle. The realistic descriptions of the narrator's injuries and amputations led many readers to believe the story to be true. The story was later collected in The Autobiography of a Quack and the Case of George Dedlow New York: The Century Co. 1900. In the introduction Mitchell says the story wasn't written for publication. He had lent the manuscript to a friend who sent it to another friend who then sent it to the Atlantic Monthly. Mitchell was a physician who specialized in disorders of the nervous system and is considered the father of modern neurology. During the Civil War he was placed in charge of Turner's Lane Military Hospital in Philadelphia which became a specialty hospital for soldiers with neurological diseases. This allowed Mitchell to study and treat soldiers with a condition he called "sensory hallucinations" of stumps commonly known as "phantom limb syndrome." Although first described as early as the 16th century by French surgeon Ambroise Pare Mitchell was the first to study and describe the phenomena in detail describing it in his 1872 textbook Injuries of Nerves and Their Consequences. The term "phantom limb syndrome" became popular from an earlier article Mitchell wrote "Phantom Limbs" in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine Dec. 1871 in which he described the condition at length for a more general audience. First edition of this charming insect adaptation of the 1001 Nights in which Fuz-Buz the fly buys himself time after being caught in Mother Grabem's web. Though best known for his contributions to neurology Silas Weir Mitchell also published children's books and poetry. As typical for this period this book was issued in late 1866 for the holiday market but 1867 is printed on the title page to extend its market relevance. According to the Bibliography of American Literature this state of the book is quite rare with all of the illustrations found in the large paper edition. 6.75'' x 5''. Original green publisher's cloth binding with gilt stamped designs. Full-page black-and-white frontispiece with eight full-page black-and-white plates. 79 1 pages. Bookplate of Nellie E. L. An excellent Edwardian souvenir photo album chronicling the trio sailing on the SS Prinzess Irene with North German Lloyd Lines in Oct. 1909 through the Azores a stop in Naples and then onto India. Including a combination of Albumen and silver gelatin photographs they attend a state dinner with British and Indian royalty tour the sights in Calcutta view a man-eating Tiger visit Jeypore and then sail onto Singapore and attend a dinner at Government House on March 2 1910; together with nine loose mounted albumen photographs of the Taj Mahal Temple of Tanjore Jessamine Tower the Great Temple of Madura and the Pearl Mosque located inside the Red Fort in Delhi.

With 56 silver gelatin & albumen photographs 3 hand-coloured 1 RPPC sized from 2.5 x 4.25 in. up to 6.75 x 9.75 in. several of the photos have descriptive text w/in the negative at lower margin some w/ lettering in manuscript below the images; seating chart for dinner with the Viceroy two ALS invitations on letterhead dance card menu and clipping touting the attendees. Recent leather post-binder lettering stamped on front cover occasional fading to a few images some albumen photos w/ wrinkling from being applied to boards occasional edgewear couple minor tears still a VG exemplar; Nine albumen photos sized from 7 x 9.25 in. up to 8.5 x 11 in. uniformly mounted on 11 x 14 in. gray studio board and 8 of the 9 w/ manuscript notes in bold hand on versos minor edgewear a few corners w/ minor wear still a VG set of images. This intriguing souvenir album for a voyage on the SS Prinzess Irene through the Mediterranean and onto India and Singapore opens with photos on shipboard of the Rutherfords and Miss Weir with their small dog companion. They have incorporated three albumen photos of Naples including a panoramic view of Naples St. Martin’s Charterhouse the Neapolitan Monastery and Santa Lucia street. Additional views on shipboard as they sail to India including a view of camels and desert dunes along the Suez Canal. Upon their arrival in Calcutta India they are invited and attend a state diner with Sir Syed Hussain Ali Bahadur b. 1875 the Nawab of Murshidabad two Maharaja’s British officers and Baron Charles Hardinge Viceroy of India with menus and invitation included and a mounted hand-coloured view of the Nawab. The menu featured Filets de Canetons au Foie Gras Mousses de Volaille Petits Rolls Mayonnaise Plum Cake Bavarois Chocolat Pistache and Macedonian Champaign while the musical accompaniment featured old favorites of Teddy Bear’s Picnic Die Meistersinger by Wagner ballet music from Faust and compositions by Rosse. Street scenes of markets native dress elephants owning the road as well as several different wagons pulled by horses camels and oxen. Also included are albumen views of pilgrims washing in the Ganges at Benares Varanasi Hawa Mahal or Palace of the Winds at Jeypore street scene in Jeypore depicts oxen market buildings by Bourne & Shepard whose images were marketed throughout India by agents and wholesale distributors. From there the trio voyage onto Singapore shown in images of Kampong Bugis along the Kallang River with a native in their boat with thatched homes built on stilts; a bustling port views along palm tree lined streets a bustling market scene elephants washing as well as a particularly striking scene of oxen pulling a large loaded woven cart. The nine separate views include albumen photos of the entrance gate to the Taj Mahal a detail shot the inner courtyard and screen around the the tombs of Shah Jehan and Mumtaz Mahal three striking and large albumen photos of the Thanjavur temple site including the Brihadishavara Temple and the monumental Gopuras gateways and finally the Pearl Mosque. The SS Prinzess Irene was an 18000 ton lier launched in 1900 for North German Lloyd was seized in 1917 in the United States renamed the USS Pocahontas and eventually sold back to North German Lloyd in 1922 first renamed the Bremen and then the Karlsruhe and sailing until 1932. New York 1830. An unsigned oil painting on canvas of the Hudson Highlands on a sunny summer's day looking north from West Point and based on a work by Robert W. Weir titled 'View of the Hudson Highlands from West Point'. <br /> <br /> Robert Walter Weir 1803 - 1889 was a member of the Hudson River School of Art. Elected to the National Academy of Design in 1829 he also served as professor of drawing at West Point from the 1830's to the 1870's. His better known works include 'The Embarkation of the Pilgrims at the rotunda of the US Capitol at Washington DC and 'Landing of Hendrik Hudson'. <br /> <br /> The view in this oil painting by an unknown artist is taken from Trophy Point looking north up the Hudson with Cold Spring buildings on the eastern shore and "Undercliff" prominently visible above the town. Undercliff was built by John Hamilton son of Alexander Hamilton who originally intended to use it as a summer residence but instead sold it to the poet Gen. George P. Morris who used it as his summer home from 1830 until his death in 1864. In the foreground appears a seated cadet and young lady wearing a red shawl and bonnet. Sailing ships glide up and down the river their sails reflected on its surface.<br /> <br /> On the verso of the canvas is stamped "Prepared by Edward Dechaux New York". Dechaux was a New York City firm active in the 1830s known as a "color man"; this firm prepared canvases for artists through a time consuming process of sizing adding layers of a solid color ground and then drying thoroughly a process that saved painters much time and effort. <br /> <br /> Weir worked with James Smillie an eminent print and bank note engraver producing fine copper engraved prints for the New York Mirror magazine. There is an engraving of the same view which appeared in the New York Mirror 1836 engraved by Smillie.<br /> <br /> A small roughly triangular chip approximately 3/8" at the upper left side in a portion of blue sky. Craquelure visible on the surface. The painting approx. 24 x 18" framed in the original gilt wooden frame with a paper label on the top edge "The Hudson Highlands from West Point" 29 x 23". Overall very nice condition. unknown
