In-8 de (4)-LVI-(2)-312 pp. 4 planches repliées, veau havane, dos lisse orné, pièce de titre en maroquin rouge, filets dorés d'encadrement sur les plats (reliure de l'époque).‎ ‎Édition originale de l'un des ouvrages fondamentaux de René-Just Haüy (Saint-Just-en-Chaussée, 1743 – Paris, 1822), « le législateur de la minéralogie » (Cuvier, éloge funèbre devant l'Académie des sciences, 1823). « Nulle science n'a autant été l'oeuvre d'un seul homme » (Alfred Lacroix).Publié l'année même où Haüy reçut la chaire de minéralogie créée pour lui à la Faculté des sciences de Paris, cet ouvrage fait le bilan de ses recherches depuis le Traité de minéralogie (1801). Haüy y compare les résultats des déterminations cristallographiques et chimiques des espèces minérales, en soutenant que la forme et la composition de la molécule constituante d'une espèce sont invariables. « La composition chimique décidait traditionnellement les quatre classes de la minéralogie (acidifère, terreuse, combustible non métallique, et métallique) et les ordres et genres ; la forme de la molécule constituante détermine l'espèce. Haüy soulignait l'invariabilité de la forme et de la composition de la molécule constituante d'une espèce, mais fut contraint d'admettre que les proportions définies étaient souvent brouillées par des matériaux hétérogènes » (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). Ces idées lui permirent de réunir en une seule espèce des minéraux jusque-là considérés comme différentset de diviser des groupes considérés comme variétés d'une même espèce, les zéolites. Les 4 planches dépliantes présentent 69 figures de cristaux géométriques.Provenance : Pierre Jacques Calixte Viaud de Belair, né en 1760, originaire de l'île de Noirmoutier, fut auditeur au cours de zoologie de Jean-Baptiste Lamarck. Sa carte de visite est contrecollée sur la page de garde, et cette inscription : M. l'Abbé Hauy décédé le 1er juin 1822 à 9 heures du matin.Très bon exemplaire. Napoleon had nominated Haüy an honorary canon of Notre Dame, in 1803 he ordered him to write a textbook of physics for the newly instituted lycées. This book was outstanding for its clear, methodological expositionof physics, although mathemaical treatment of problems was lacking. März 1878 ebenda) war ein deutscher Arzt und Physiker. Er formulierte als einer der ersten den Ersten Hauptsatz der Thermodynamik. Robert Mayer wuchs in Heilbronn als jüngster von drei Söhnen des Apothekers Christian Mayer in der Heilbronner Rosenapotheke auf. Er stammte aus einer angesehenen Heilbronner Familie und war mit Philipp Melanchthon und Johannes Reuchlin verwandt. 1841 ließ er sich in Heilbronn nieder, wurde zum Oberamtswundarzt gewählt, heiratete im Jahr darauf Wilhelmine Closs (1816?1899) und lebte von 1842 bis zu seinem Tod 1878 im Kirchhöfle 13. Er schickte an Johann Christian Poggendorffs Annalen der Physik eine Abhandlung mit dem Titel Über die quantitative und qualitative Bestimmung der Kräfte, in der er einen ?Erhaltungssatz der Kraft? (gemeint war Energie) postulierte. Da sie fundamentale physikalische Irrtümer enthielt, wurde sie zunächst nicht publiziert. Unbeirrt verfolgte Mayer die Idee weiter und setzte sich mit dem Tübinger Physikprofessor Johann Gottlieb Nörrenberg auseinander, der seine Hypothese zwar ablehnte, ihm aber eine wertvolle Anregung gab, wie er sie experimentell überprüfen könnte. Wenn Bewegungsenergie sich in Wärmeenergie verwandelt, müsste Wasser durch Schütteln zu erwärmen sein. Mayer konnte nicht nur diesen Nachweis führen, sondern bestimmte auch den quantitativen Faktor der Umwandlung, das Mechanische Wärmeäquivalent. Das Ergebnis seiner Untersuchungen veröffentlichte er 1842 im Maiheft von Justus von Liebigs Annalen der Chemie und Pharmacie unter dem Titel Bemerkungen über die Kräfte der unbelebten Natur. In seinem Büchlein Die organische Bewegung im Zusammenhang mit dem Stoffwechsel (1845) konnte er den Zahlenwert des Wärmeäquivalents noch präzisieren, anfangs mit 365 kpm = 1 kcal, später auf 425 kpm verbessert; die genaue Zahl ist 427 kpm. Diese Relation besagt, dass Arbeit und Wärme einander äquivalent sind und als verschiedene Energieformen in dem oben genannten, immer gleichen Verhältnis, ineinander übergeführt werden können. Dieser Satz wird als Erster Hauptsatz der Wärmelehre bezeichnet und war der Vorreiter des allgemeinen Energieerhaltungssatzes, den Hermann von Helmholtz 1847 formulierte.
