A near fine wide-margined copy. ---- <br> <br> RARE FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM. Galvani first published his theory in 1791 in volume V of the Proceedings of the Bologna Academy of Science. He believed that "animals possess in their nerves and muscles a subtle fluid quite analogous to ordinary electricity" DSB. The offprint of his 1791 article the first separate edition of the work is known in only a dozen copies. Galvani's nephew Aldini became his uncle's most ardent supporter and published this edition - the first in book form - the following year with his extended notes and commentary. At the end appears an exchange of letters between Don Bassano Carminati and Galvani containing Carminati's report of Volta's repetition of Galvani's experiments which Volta interpreted correctly as the result of contact electricity. <br> "By the end of the eighteenth century the connexion between nervous action and electricity had been the subject of investigation for some time. Newton when discussing the properties of aether had made suggestions that an electric spirit might convey sensations to the brain along the nerves and produce muscular reactions: see Book m of Opticks and the General Scholium concluding the second edition of the Principia. Haller also made experiments trying to prove a connexion between electrical action and reflexes of the muscles. It was left to Luigi Galvani professor of anatomy at Bologna in On the Effects of Electricity on Muscular Motion to provide as he thought dramatic experi¬ments on what was called 'animal electricity' and after¬wards 'galvanism'. Galvani observed in his laboratory that when a nerve in a frog's leg was touched with a scalpel violent contractions of the muscles occurred simultaneous with the sparks discharged from a nearby electrical machine. He further discovered that when one metal was placed in contact with a frog's nerve another with a muscle and the metals touched contraction of the muscle took place without needing a spark from an electrical machine. As a physiologist Galvani thought that this action was due to the presence of electricity in the animal itself as in the 'electric eel' and that the metal wires simply served as conductors. He did not realize that he had not discovered just a new physiological source of electricity but a new source of continuous electric flow in chemical action. Hitherto electricity had been produced only in high-voltage intermittent surges from frictional machines. It was Alessandro Volta a physicist who proved that animals were inessential to 'galvanic' electricity and who constructed the first battery to cause a current to flow by chemical action. Galvani's paper immediately aroused great interest in the scientific world and it involved him in controversy with Volta largely carried on by Galvani's nephew Giovanni Aldini on his uncle's behalf. Galvani's influence on the modem development of energy electrochemistry and electromagnetism is an indirect one. brossura Studiare chimica fisica significa imparare a svolgere esercizi, per comprendere a fondo il significato e lo sviluppo delle tante equazioni che la caratterizzano. Questo si traduce nell'impostare concettualmente lo svolgimento dell'esercizio e poi nel ricavare i risultati richiesti sulla base dei dati conosciuti. Per molto tempo, i calcoli sono stati svolti con una calcolatrice elettronica tascabile provvista di funzioni trigonometriche e sufficiente per affrontare le equazioni di secondo grado. Tuttavia, questa impostazione era lontana dalla realtà di un laboratorio, dove spesso le equazioni da risolvere sono di ordine superiore al secondo o terzo, e le misure così numerose da rendere arduo interpolarle o adattarle a un'equazione su carta; inoltre, nella pratica sono frequentissime le equazioni che conducono a espressioni complicate, da cui risulta abbastanza difficile estrarre il parametro desiderato. In altre parole, utilizzare il computer per svolgere i calcoli è praticamente indispensabile, se si vuole restituire il senso della pratica di laboratorio. La seconda edizione di Esercizi di chimica fisica propone di usare, per alcuni problemi, il software open source Maxima, corredato della sua interfaccia grafica wxMaxima, disponibile per sistemi operativi Linux, macOS, Windows e Android. Gli argomenti presi in esame, per ciascuno dei quali vengono proposti 30 esercizi con risoluzione, sono suddivisi in nove capitoli; i primi sei - su gas, termochimica, equilibrio chimico, sostanze pure e miscele, elettrochimica, cinetica chimica - riprendono gli argomenti della precedente edizione con esercizi rinnovati, mentre gli ultimi tre - dedicati a chimica quantistica, diagrammi logaritmici e bilanciamenti - compaiono per la prima volta.

He Was The Founder And Proprietor Of G. A. Natesan & Co. Which Published Nationalist Books The Most Prominent Among Whom Was The Indian Review. Natesan Was Involved With The Indian Independence Movement Right From His Early Days. In 1900 He Started The Indian Review A Monthly Publication In English. While Covering Mostly Nationalistic Themes The Indian Review Also Included Literary Reviews Illustrations And Sections On Economy And Agriculture. Natesan Advertised On The Front Page That His Publication Was "Devoted To The Discussion Of All Topics Of Interest". When Mahatma Gandhi Visited Madras For The First Time Since His Arrival In India In 1915 He Stayed At Natesan's House At Thambu Chetty Street Georgetown. His Stay Lasted From 17 April 1915 To 8 May 1915. In His Later Life Natesan Underwent A Change Of Ideology And Joined The Indian Liberal Party. He Was Elected Joint Secretary Of The Liberal Party In 1922. He Was First Nominated As A Non-Official Member To The Council Of State In 1923 And For A Second Time In 1931. During His Tenure As A Member Of The Council Of State Natesan Served As Member Of The Indian Delegation To The Empire Parliamentary Association In Canada. He Also Served As The Member Of The Indian Iron And Steel Tariff Board In 1933-34. Natesan Was Appointed Sheriff Of Madras In 1938. <br/> <br/> G. A. Natesan & Co hardcover
