br. Per centinaia di anni la certezza è stata che l'atomo, indivisibile, rappresentasse il frammento elementare costitutivo della materia. Poi, il 30 aprile 1897, grazie a un semplice ma potente esperimento un ingegnoso scienziato inglese affermò che esisteva un corpuscolo, 1.700 volte più piccolo dell'atomo di idrogeno, responsabile della propagazione dei segnali elettrici. Con la sua scoperta J.J. Thomson introdusse l'elettrone e lanciò questa piccola pallina nel campo da gioco della scienza e della tecnologia. Attraverso poco più di un secolo, la natura dell'elettrone ha conosciuto continue trasformazioni, adattandosi di volta in volta al progresso delle nostre conoscenze e alle nuove regole della scienza: dalla meccanica quantistica alla superconduzione, fino alla creazione di nuovi materiali.
