Benché il suo più importante contributo alla fisica riguardi la polarizzazione della luce, le opere pubblicate da Biot (1774-1862) comprendono una gamma di soggetti che vanno dall'astronomia alla matematica, dal magnetismo alla velocità del suono. Membro del Gruppo di Arcueil e del Bureau des Longitudes, Biot mantenne un intenso scambio con i suoi colleghi e dal 1804 al 1809 collaborò a vari progetti con Gay-Lussac, Humboldt, Arago e Thenard. Dal 1811 al 1820 focalizzò le sue ricerche sulla polarizzazione e gli fu conferito il Premio Rumford per le sue scoperte. Quest'opera rivela il suo interesse per l’argomento, in quanto tutto il secondo volume è dedicato alla luce e agli esperimenti con le qualità polarizzanti dei vari cristalli.
