ill., br. Al Centro Europeo Ricerche Nucleari (CERN) di Ginevra è in funzione la più grande macchina che l'uomo abbia mai costruito: il Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Si accelerano e si fanno urtare particelle di energia altissima per verificare le leggi fondamentali della Natura. LHC ci ha già permesso di raggiungere temperature molto simili a quelle dell'inizio del Big Bang cosmologico ed al CERN è stata anche intrappolata l'antimateria. Ma non si è ancora trovata la particella di Higgs la cui esistenza confermerebbe completamente l'attuale teoria unificata delle interazioni elettromagnetiche e deboli e, soprattutto, spiegherebbe l'origine della massa. La massa, anche quella delle particelle più piccole, non è una proprietà fondamentale. Essa deriva dalle forze di interazione e, in particolare, dall'esistenza di una nuova particella, battezzata "particella di Dio", attraverso un affascinante meccanismo, detto rottura spontanea della simmetria, che viene descritto in questo libro con semplici esempi.

On June 7 and 14 1830 three years after Fresnel's death Cauchy presented a comparatively short given his customary standards memoir on light before the Académie in Paris which appeared there after in the Bulletin de Férussac; he also had it printed separately by de Bure Frères . Then after the appearance in 1830 of the Memoir on light that he had presented on June 14 of that year before the Académie Cauchy published one further paper on light in Férussac and nothing more until 1835. We do however know that at the time of his June 14 presentation he also announced to the Académie that he 'had the formulas relative to the dispersion of light that he had read at the last session.' The Procès Verbaux for the meeting accordingly noted that Cauchy had presented a memoir 'on the subject.' J.Z. Buchwald Chapter 22 - Cauchy's Theory of Dispersion Anticipated by Fresnel. In 1830 using the discrete model of a medium ether Cauchy tried to explain dispersion of the light under the assumption that the light represents elastic waves with a very large frequency. He showed that for wavelengths that are much greater than the distance between the neighbouring particles in the one-dimensional lattice the wave velocity does not depend on the wavelength. However for the short wavelengths that is for high frequencies the wave velocity is a function of wavelength and can vary essentially. Cauchy reprinted the Memoir of 1830 during his stay in Prague in 1835 and further expanded his theory in successive Memoirs published in Prague between 1835 and 1836. - Visit our website for additional images and information. Laura Bassi. Donne, genere e scienza nell'Italia del Settecento
br. Laura Bassi occupa un posto speciale nella storia della scienza e delle donne. Ripercorrere la sua vita straordinaria consente di comprendere questioni cruciali per la storia culturale del Settecento. Con la laurea, ottenuta nel 1732 all'Università di Bologna, le fu conferita anche una cattedra stipendiata di fisica: com'è potuto accadere in un'epoca in cui alle donne era per lo più negato il diritto all'istruzione? Nel contesto istituzionale e politico della Bologna del tempo, questo libro narra l'origine del mito che attorno alla figura di Laura Bassi si iniziò a costruire quando era poco più che una bambina, fino alla fama internazionale che si guadagnò come esperta di fisica sperimentale. Si raccontano anche i riconoscimenti che, in forme diverse, altre studiose ottennero nella settecentesca "Repubblica degli scienziati": un primo e importante ingresso delle donne nelle istituzioni scientifiche cui seguì quel "ritorno all'ordine" ottocentesco non ancora superato.

"By weighing the world he rendered the law of gravitation complete. The law was no longer a proportionality statement but a quantitatively exact one; this was the most important addition to the science of gravitation since Newton" DSB IIIp.158. <br> "Cavendish was the first to observe gravitational motions induced by comparatively minuted portions of ordinary matter.
