Chevreul (1786 - 1889) studiò chimica con Vauquelin al Musée d'Histoire Naturelle. Compì tutta la sua carriera accademica presso questo Istituto, di cui fu direttore dal 1846 al 1879. Fu anche direttore alla Tintoria di Gobelins, succedendo a Berthollet. Questo libro rappresenta il suo lavoro più importante e affronta il problema della percezione dei colori, ma si occupa anche di chimica, filosofia e del metodo scientifico.
