Se l'ipotesi avanzata nel 1905 da Einstein, in base alla quale la luce era da considerare una particella e non un'onda, fu capace di mettere in discussione un secolo di esperimenti, il "principio di indeterminazione" di Werner Heisenberg (1927) e il famoso paradosso del gatto di Erwin Schrödinger (1935) dimostrarono l'incompletezza dell'interpretazione classica della meccanica quantistica fino ad allora dominante (la cosidetta "intepretazione di Copenaghen") e aprirono nuovi orizzonti alla ricerca. Come dichiarò Niels Bohr, "chi non è rimasto sconvolto dalla teoria quantistica non l'ha veramente capita". Kumar colloca la scienza nel contesto dei grandi sconvolgimenti dell'epoca moderna e illustra in maniera chiara e rigorosa i termini del conflitto. "Quantum" non solo ci aiuta a capire il ruolo essenziale svolto da figure minori di pensatori e scienziati solitamente trascurati, ma offre anche una lettura irrinunciabile per chiunque sia affascinato da questa avventura della conoscenza umana complessa ed emozionante.
