Pertanto tale insegnamento è da sempre fondamentale nel percorso formativo delle lauree scientifiche e tecnologiche in Italia (in particolare, per i corsi di laurea in Fisica, Matematica e Ingegneria). Questo manuale si propone come un testo moderno, formale nei suoi aspetti matematici, ma allo stesso tempo pratico nella discussione delle problematiche tecnico-scientifiche. L'obiettivo è aiutare gli studenti a padroneggiare strumenti avanzati di analisi matematica, geometria e algebra, che estendano e completino i corsi di base. In tal modo essi potranno affrontare agevolmente le tematiche che saranno trattate negli insegnamenti successivi, come meccanica quantistica, teoria (classica e quantistica) dei campi, relatività (speciale e generale), analisi dei segnali, etc. L'approccio graduale degli autori raggiunge un equilibrio tra varietà di argomenti - tali da risultare utili a diversi percorsi di studio futuri - sintesi e garanzia di rapidità di apprendimento.
