(Voltaire). Ces deux écrits sont au nombre de ceux réunis dans ces deux volumes ---- Pour plus de détails au sujet de cette célèbre querelle voir M. Gueroult : "Dynamique et métaphysique leibnitizienne" et plus particulièrement la note "Sur le principe de moindre action chez Maupertuis", pp. 215/235 ---- "Maupertuis clearly was successful in attracting to Berlin scientific luminaries who greatly enhanced the luster of the new Academy. Euler, one of the greatest mathematicians of the day, was already there. Matters were going well, when the celebrated "affaire Koenig" erupted : Samuel Koenig, a protégé of Maupertuis... submitted a dissertation attacking the validity of the principle of least action and then - most strangely for a devoted adherent of Leibnitz - ascribed the discredited law to the latter, citing a letter from Leibnitz to Hermann... The controversy touched off by this work, resulted in perhaps the ugliest of all the famous scientific disputes. Its principal figures were Koenig, Maupertuis, Euler and Voltaire. Maupertuis demanded that the letter be produced. Koenig produced a copy but stated that the original was in the hands of a certain swiss named Henzi... After exhautive search no trace of the letter was found in Henzi's belongings. Maupertuis then demanded that the Academy take action against Koenig... When it became clear that the original could not be found, Euler published, with the approval of the Academy "Exposé concernant l'examen de la lettre de M. De Leibnitz", where, among other things, he declared the letter a fake. The conflict grew critical when, later in the same year, Voltaire published his Diatribe du Docteur Akakia, defending Koenig and making laughingstocks of both Maupertuis and Euler...". - In 1865 Maxwell resigned the chair at King's College, London, and returned to Glenlair with Katherine. In his paper 'On governors' (1868) he mathematically described the behaviour of governors, devices that control the speed of steam engines, thereby establishing the theoretical basis of control engineering. In his paper ""On reciprocal figures, frames and diagrams of forces"" (1870) he discussed the rigidity of various designs of lattice. He wrote the textbook Theory of Heat (1871) and the treatise Matter and Motion (1876). Maxwell was also the first to make explicit use of dimensional analysis, in 1871. Maxwell's work on thermodynamics led him to devise the Gedankenexperiment thought experiment that came to be known as Maxwell's demon. unknown‎

‎Maxwell James C.‎

‎Trattato elementare di elettricità‎

‎ill., br.

‎First appearance of the papers in which Mayer describes his invention of the method of floating tiny magnets in a magnetic field, used in the early twentieth century as a key to discovering or illustrating atomic structure.""Mayer is most remembered (and cited) for his experiments in which magnetized needles were inserted into corks, which were then ftoated on water with their south poles upward, under the north pole of a powerful electromagnet. Under these conditions, certain definite stable configurations were observed “which suggested the manner in which atoms of molecules may be grouped in the formation of definite compounds and which illustrated various properties of the constitution of matter. These experiments won high praise from Kelvin ... and were later used by J. J. Thomson (Electricity and Matter [New Haven, 1904], ... and others as a key to the way in which a characteristic number of electrons might be arranged within the atoms of each chemical element in relation to the periodic table. Mayer thus made a small but significant contribution to the theory of atomic structure."" (DSB)Issue 94 of vol. 16 contains an importent paper by HENRY A. ROWLAND ""Research on the Absolute Unit of Electrical Resistance"", pp. 281-291, in which he established an authoritative figure for the absolute value of the Ohm. - Wheeler Gift: 3967.‎
