Alla fine della guerra molti scienziati tedeschi rivendicarono la propria apoliticità e la propria opposizione al regime: Debye affermò di essere andato in America per fuggire dalle interferenze naziste alle sue ricerche; Heisenberg sostenne, insieme ad altri, di aver deliberatamente rallentato la fabbricazione della bomba atomica... Muovendosi tra storia, biografia e storia della fisica, l'autore inquadra le difficili e ambigue scelte morali di tre vite intrappolate tra gli ideali della scienza e un'ideologia tirannica; illuminando di nuova luce i vari modi in cui la maggioranza degli scienziati, tra complicità e resistenza, fece i conti con il regime nazista.
