A stamp to front free endpaper. � First appearance of this importent paper in which pauli shows that the hydrogen spectrum can be derived from the new Quantum Theory.<br><br>Immediately after Heisenberg published his new quantum mechanics �ber quantentheoretische Umdeutung kinematischer und mechanischer Beziehungen 1925 many physicists were sceptic towards this new theory. In this paper Pauli demonstrated a number of important applications of Heisenberg's theory which were to convince the majority physicists that the new quantum mechanics was correct in its description of atomic phenomena. From Heisenberg's theory Pauli derived the line spectrum of the hydrogen atom calculated the Balmer levels derived the Stark effect and most importantly showed that the difficulties with crossed electric and magnetic fields disappeared in the new theory; that is the problem of calculating the energy perturbations in the hydrogen spectrum if the atom is acted upon by crossed electric or magnetic fields - this was one of the major anomalies of the old quantum theory. <br><br>This paper proved the superiority of Heisenberg's theory over the old quantum mechanics of Bohr and thus played an important role in the departure to the new quantum mechanics.<br><br>B.L. van der Waerden: Sources of Quantum Mechanics - this paper is no. 16.
