Albert Einstein’s theories of relativity led to a complete revision of the way people perceived their external world. Our understanding of space time gravity and indeed every facet of how the cosmos works stems from Einstein. Photoelectric cells television nuclear power space travel and semiconductors all bear his signature; even the global positioning system GPS people tap into on their smartphones relies on Einstein’s theory of general relativity to function accurately. Sigmund Freud’s writings led to a complete revision of the way people perceived their internal world. It changed people’s understanding of human behaviour and pioneered insights into the self and created an awareness that there are engines that drive behavior and motives beyond the obvious. It also changed the way society thought about and dealt with mental illness. Einstein and Freud were Jews and likely the most impactful Jewish men of science the world has known. Both were compelled to flee their native Germany and Austria with the coining to power of the Nazis. Einstein came to the U.S. while Freud went to Britain. Freud wrote his nephew in 1926: “The Jews all over the world boast of my name pairing me with Einstein.†That pairing continues today. Einstein’s younger son Eduard a medical student with an interest in psychoanalysis suffered from mental illness. It was Eduard who urged his father to read the work of Freud. Einstein first met Freud in 1926 and after their meeting Freud observed of Einstein “He is serene assured and courteous understands as much of psychology as I do of physics and so we had a very pleasant chatâ€. Einstein was not then convinced of Freud’s theories. In July 1932 the physicist wrote to the psychoanalyst to open a dialogue about how best to avoid war. Their correspondence was published in the 1933 pamphlet entitled Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud Why War In 1936 Einstein wrote Freud on the occasion of the latter’s 80th birthday indicating he now accepted Freud’s work as accurate: “I am glad that this generation will be granted the opportunity of expressing its respect and gratitude to you as one of its greatest teachers… Until a short time ago I was only aware of the speculative force of your thought and its powerful influence on our contemporary view of the world and was unable to make up my mind about the intrinsic truth of your theories. However I recently happened to hear about certain as such insignificant cases which convinced me that any differing explanation an explanation differing from the doctrine of repression was excluded. This gave me pleasure for it is always a source of pleasure when a great and beautiful idea proves to be correct in actual factâ€. Freud responded “I really must tell you how delighted I am to learn of the change in your judgment…†Theodor Reik was one of Freud’s first students in Vienna and like Einstein and Freud was a Jew who fled the Nazis. He emigrated to the United States in 1938 went on to become a pioneer of psychoanalysis here. He remained Freud’s friend for decades. Reik founded the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis after he was refused membership in the New York Psychoanalytic Society. Despite his lack of a medical degree the principle reason for his rejection Freud himself wrote an essay The Question of Lay Analysis defending Reik’s credentials. The two remained friends until Freud’s death in 1939. Typed letter signed in German Peconic NY where he pursued his hobby of sailing August 3 1938 to Reik less than two months after the latter had arrived in the U.S. expressing his opinion on Freud. “I keep myself completely apart from university circles and cannot take the initiative on your behalf due to a lack of personal contacts. But I am happy to empower you to mention me in your efforts. I am an eager admirer of Freud as an author and thinker and I know that an opinion along the lines of what he has said about you demonstrates a lot. So please dispose of me as far as it makes sense under the stated circumstances. With great esteem A. Einstein.†This is the first letter we have ever seen reach the market in which one of the three giants of science offers an opinion on any of the others. Pp. 109-148 tipped-in errata slip at p. 147. � Very rare original proof-copy of the two highly important appendices for Einstein's "The Meaning of Relativity" third edition 1950 the second appendix being one of the most important pieces Einstein ever wrote namely the appendix "in which he described his most recent work on unification" Pais and the work which was hailed by The New York Times under the heading "New Einstein theory gives a master key to the universe". The first appendix which appeared for the second edition of the work remained unchanged throughout the history of "the Meaning of Relativity" and was written because "Since the first edition of this little book some advances have been made in the theory of relativity. . The first step forward is the conclusive demonstration of the existence of the red shift of the spectral lines by the negative gravitational potential of the place of origin" . A second step forward which will be mentioned briefly concerns the law of motion of a gravitating body." . A third step forward concerning the so-called "cosmologic problem" wiil be considered here in detail." pp. 109-10. <br><br>The present 40 pages constitute the final proof-copy of the entire appendices I and II to the Generalized Theory of Gravitation exactly as they appeared in the third edition Princeton in 1950. <br><br>Einstein's "The Meaning of Relativity" was originally published in 1922 on the basis of his "Vier Vorlesungen ueber Relativitetstheorie" given at Princeton in 1921. A second edition with an appendix appendix I appeared in 1945 several issues and editions of this appeared also and in 1949 the third edition with the seminal Appendix II printed for the first time appears also appeared in 1950 in Princeton. In 1950 a revised edition of the third edition appears having Appendix II slightly revised and in 1953 the heavily revised fourth edition appears. THIS IS THE PROOF-COPY OF APPENDICES I AND II FOR THE "THIRD EDITION INCLUDING THE GENERALIZED THEORY OF GRAVITATION" PRINCETON 1950. <br><br>The main focus of the work throughout all these editions of the work since 1949 is Appendix II which deals with Einstein's main interest the generalization of the Gravitation Theory which was to unite the general theory of relativity with electromagnetism recovering an approximation for quantum theory and presenting us with a theory to explain the universe as a unified entity the ultimate goal for the greatest physicist that ever lived. "This was Einstein's ultimate response to the mechanical-electromagnetic crisis in physical theory he had first talked about in the opening of his 1905 light quantum-paper." Nandor in D.S.B. p. 330. It was indeed Einstein's aim to provide an explanation of the universe through his unified field theory although he was well aware that his sort of field theory might not exist. However even the establishing of the non-existence of it could bring us closer to an explanation than we had ever been before. There is no topic of greater importance to Einstein than his theory of unification. <br><br>"In 1949 Einstein wrote a new appendix for the third edition of his "The Meaning of Relativity" in which he described his most recent work on unification. It was none of his doing that a page of his manuscript appeared on the front page of "The New York Times" under the heading "New Einstein theory gives a master key to the universe". A CRITICAL MOMENT IN THE DISCOVERY OF GENERAL RELATIVITY: AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED TO LUDWIG HOPF FROM 1913 WHERE EINSTEIN ABANDONS THE REQUIREMENT OF GENERAL COVARIANCE. Background of the Letter - Einstein's struggles with general covariance: "In developing general relativity Einstein sought to satisfy many requirements. However we shall see the his efforts were dominated by a single theme covariance" specifically general covariance which was "an important concept for Einstein as he tried to generalize a theory of relativity. It meant that the relationships between their components remained the same even when there were arbitrary changes or rotations in the space and time coordinate system." John D. By early 1913 Einstein had been struggling with his equations for general relativity for many years and "after many aborted attempts Einstein eventually derived at the end of the Zurich Notebook a field equation that became known as the core of the Entwurf theory. It primarily satisfied the principles rooted in classical physics namely the correspondence principle and the conservation principle. Einstein realized that the class of coordinate systems in which the Entwurf equation takes on the same form does not satisfy the generalized principle of relativity in the way he imagined. He therefore abandoned with a heavy heart the realization of general covariance. Nevertheless he could reassure himself that this equation was acceptable because the necessary restriction of the admissible coordinate systems could apparently be justified by the requirement to implement the conservation principle. So there seemed to be a cogent reason for the limited extent to which the generalized principle of relativity was fulfilled in the Entwurf theory. and Einstein assumed that it was the best that could be achieved." Despite the publication of the Entwurf theory however Einstein still could not let go of requirement for a generally covariant theory of general relativity and began to think of the lack of general covariance as an "ugly dark spot" of the theory and "had found another more profound argument - the famous 'hole argument' - claiming that generally covariant theories are bound to violate causality. The hole argument and its refutation eventually became the starting point for formulating the important concept of background-independent theories that is of theories for which time and space are not a fixed stage for the drama of physics. "In 1913 however it was precisely the erroneous hole argument that motivated Einstein to further consolidate the Entwurf theory whose main 'ugly dark spot' seemed to have been overcome. He concluded in this letter to Hopf that 'the fact that the gravitational equations are not generally covariant which still bothered me so much some time ago has proved to be unavoidable; it can easily be proved that a theory with generally covariant equations cannot exist if it is required that the field be mathematically completely determined by the matter'" Hanoch Gutfreund and Jürgen Renn The Road to Relativity pp. 24-26. This oft-cited letter to Hopf documents a pivotal moment in Einstein's thinking during the creation of general relativity. For some time after this letter Einstein did indeed seem comfortable with abandoning the requirement for general covariance but all that changed during the autumn of 1915 when during a flurry of creative activity he was able to discover equations for general relativity that satisfied the requirements of general covariance. Although the generally covariant equations of general relativity have been universally acknowledged as one of the supreme achievements of human thought the issue of covariance in general relativity has been the subject of continued concern and the subject of much modern scholarship. As noted Einstein scholar John D. Norton explains "Einstein offered the principle of general covariance as the fundamental physical principle of his general theory of relativity and as responsible for extending the principle of relativity to accelerated motion. This view was disputed almost immediately with the counter-claim that the principle was no relativity principle and was physically vacuous. But I could not even think of it since I must call myself happy if I can fulfill my paper-writing obligations even after having renounced all pleasure-giving extravagance. Above all my warmest congratulations on the birth of your strapping boy. May he be as healthy and intelligent as his old man but in addition also a little more industrious. I am now very satisfied with the gravitation theory. The fact that the gravitational equations are not generally covariant which still bothered me so much some time ago has proved to be unavoidable; it can easily be proved that a theory with generally covariant equations cannot exist if it is required that the field be mathematically completely determined by the matter. In Brussels the lecture of Bragg Sr. was extremely interesting. It is unbelievable how much this man has already found out about the lattice structure of crystals and about Röntgen rays. Now all at once it is possible to carry out exact determinations of the wavelengths of Röntgen rays. Some metals e.g. radium display very narrow emission ranges so that it is really possible to produce monochromatic Röntgen rays. One can safely say that Laue's figures are now totally explained. At the same time Debije's work on the effect of temperature is also of great importance. One hopes that Debije will soon demonstrate the incorrectness of the hypothesis of zero-point energy the theoretical untenability of which became glaringly obvious to me soon after the publication of the paper I co-authored with Mr. Stern. Addressed to his son Eduard "Tetel" Einstein and signed "Papa" the letter written in ink on both sides of one sheet reads in full translated from the original German: 

Dear Tetel

 I hope by now you've received Freud's lectures from Vienna. I've read most of them myself in the past. They really made me admire the Author but they didn't convince me that his theories were correct. 

I must admit however that based on my personal experiences my conviction about those theories is weakening -- I feel now that he was onto something at least in regards to the main theses. I would have written to you sooner but work is keeping me very busy. Even though they say that the work of a single person will not have much of an impact in the big picture it does not diminish the passion in which we pursue our interests and that is a good thing. 

 Although personal illusions may bring warmth and joy into one's life when young they don't last a lifetime. Life would be bleak if the work and the passion for discovery did not exist. In my free time I am currently reading Schiller's poems which I have neglected since my youth. 

They feel a bit pompous but at the same time they are enthralling in their choice of words and grammar. I am really happy that I picked them up again. 

I would have liked to send you another book on the top of the Freud but didn't know which one to send -- especially because I don't get a lot of German writings anymore.

 When I have some extra free time after finishing Schiller I really want to start reading Shakespeare everything from him I can get my hands on. If you like to read it too perhaps we could discuss it at some later time
 

 Albert is a real delight -- he has been traveling up and down the country for the past 6 weeks and will have seen and experienced many interesting things. I really hope he has followed my advice and kept a journal but I am not holding high hopes. When it comes to talking and writing he seems to be chronically constipated. With my warmest regards

 Papa Einstein's life advice underscoring one of his core beliefs: Einstein often stated that his main goal in life was the quest for truth no matter how difficult and painstaking the quest. He advises Eduard in this letter that it is the pursuit and the work in attaining the goal that brings satisfaction and sustains one throughout life even if "the work of a single person will not have much of an impact in the big picture". This he notes is critical to understand after the illusions of youth have succumbed to reality. Einstein Eduard and Freud: Eduard Einstein nicknamed "Tete" or "Tetel" born in 1910 was the second son of Albert and his first wife Mileva. From an early age he became enamored with the teachings of Freud even hanging a picture of famous psychiatrist on his bedroom wall. By the age of twenty he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and consequently was institutionalized several times throughout his life. Einstein's views of Freud's teachings were somewhat more nuanced than those of his son. Initially Einstein did not show much interest in Freud's theories and after their first meeting in 1927 Freud famously remarked "He understands as much about psychology as I do about physics." Over the years however Einstein began studying Freud's works. After corresponding with Freud somewhat regularly throughout the 1930s and even collaborating with him on a project sponsored by the League of Nations "Why War" 1932 Einstein began to move from a deep skepticism to - as indicated in this letter - a growing acceptance. By 1936 - just before this letter was written - Einstein sent birthday greetings to Freud acknowledging: "Until recently I could only apprehend the speculative power of your train of thought together with its enormous influence on the Weltanschauung of the present era without being in a position to form a definite opinion about the amount of truth it contains. Not long ago however I had the opportunity of hearing about a few instances not very important in themselves which in my judgment exclude any other interpretation than that provided by the theory of repression. I was delighted to come across them since it is always delightful when a great and beautiful conception proves to be consonant with reality." 
In this letter to Eduard Einstein admits to Eduard that he now believes Freud "was onto something at least in regards to the main theses." Einstein Shakespeare Schiller: Einstein's fondness for music is well-known but not as much has been recorded about his literary tastes. It is not surprising and has been previously documented that Einstein had a fondness for the great German poet Schiller but we can find no other references to Shakespeare by Einstein in any other letters or manuscripts. His words to Eduard "I really want to start reading Shakespeare everything from him I can get my hands on" imply that Einstein has recently "discovered" Shakespeare and is excited at the discovery. 
Note: Although the letter is not dated we can assume that it was written late November - December in 1937 when Einstein's son Albert was visiting the United States a trip he refers to in the letter.
