"In his paper of 1922 Friedmann offered a complete analysis of the solutions of Einstein's cosmological field equations that went beyond the earlier solutions of Einstein and de Sitter as it also included nonstatic solutions. Friedmann did so clearly and explicitly: "The purpose of this note" he wrote "is firstly to show that the cylindrical Einsteinand spherical de Sitter worlds are special cases of more general assumptions and secondly to demonstrate the possibility of a world in which the curvature of space is independent of the three spatial coordinates but does on time".Ibid.In 'Über die Krümmung des Raumes' Friedman derived the non-stationary solutions to Einstein's field equations. Einstein quickly responded in a short comment 'Bemerkung' in which he expressed his suspicion of such a model of the Universe and apparently pointed out an error in Friedman's calculations. However Friedman now wrote a letter to Einstein in which he enclosed his full calculations. Shortly after this Einstein submitted a short notice Notiz in which he admitted that he himself had performed a calculation error and that Friedman's solutions which shed new light on the matter were valid. Friedman's expanding universe model was corroborated by Edwin Hubble's red-shift observations in 1929. In 'Über die Möglichkeit einer Welt mit konstanter negativer Krümmung des Raumes' Friedman derived the Friedman-equations and demonstrated that he had command of all three Friedman-models describing positive zero and negative curvature respectively nearly a decade before the independent discoveries of the same models by Lemaître Robertson and Walker. "Friedmann made a valuable contribution to Einstein's general theory of relativity. As always his interest was not limited simply to familiarizing himself with this new field of science but led to his own remarkable investigations. Friedmann's work on the theory of relativity dealt with one of its most difficult questions the cosmological problem. In his paper "Über die Krümmung des Raumes" 1922 he outlined the fundamental ideas of his cosmology: the supposition concerning the homogeneity of the distribution of matter in space and the consequent homogence of "world" time for which at any moment in time the metrics of space will be identical at all points and in all directions. This theory is especially important because it leads to a sufficiently correct explanation of the fundamental phenomenon known as the "red shift." This solution of the Einstein field equations obtained from the above propositions is the model for any homogeneous and isotropic cosmological theory. It is interesting to note that Einstein thought that the cosmological solution to the equations of a field had to be static and had to lead to a closed model of the universe. Friedmann discarded both conditions and arrived at an independent solution. Einstein welcomed Friedmann's results because they showed the dispensability of the ad hoc cosmological term Einstein had been forced to introduce into the basic field equation of general relativity". br. La vita di Albert Einstein è stata spesa inseguendo con lucidità e determinazione due grandi sogni. Uno scientifico: l'elaborazione di una teoria unitaria della fisica. L'altro politico: la pace del mondo. La tesi del mio libro è che quello di Einstein è stato sempre un lucido progetto politico. Fondato su solide basi culturali e su una notevole capacità di "leggere" in anticipo l'evoluzione della storia. Il suo pacifismo, infatti, può essere diviso in tre grandi fasi, durante le quali è stato adattato alla realtà politica. Una prima fase, dal 1915 al 1932, durante la quale il suo pacifismo ha avuto toni radicali. Una seconda fase, in concomitanza con l'avvento del nazismo, Einstein ha "sospeso" il suo pacifismo: riconoscendo che contro Hitler non c'era altra possibilità che opporre forza alla forza. Una terza fase, dopo il 1945, in cui si è battuto per il disarmo nucleare, considerando che quella atomica era diventata la nuova e più grave minaccia per l'umanità. Il pensiero di Einstein ha influenzato generazioni di pacifisti e ha avuto influenza su molti uomini politici, compreso Michail Gorbaciov.

br. Nel 1915, cento anni fa, Albert Einstein rende pubblica per la prima volta a Berlino la sua teoria della relatività generale. È una delle più grandi conquiste nella storia del pensiero. E ancora oggi costituisce uno dei fondamenti della fisica. Ma Einstein è insoddisfatto. Definisce l'equazione che la descrive come un monumento composto da marmo pregiato (la parte che riguarda il campo gravitazionale) e da legno scadente (la parte che riguarda la materia), e si pone alla ricerca di una teoria ancora più generale - una teoria del tutto - che unifichi l'intera fisica. Ma Einstein non riuscirà a portare a termine questa ricerca e ancora oggi essa costituisce la sfida più grande per i fisici.

br. La sua immagine è dappertutto. Su tazze, magliette, sui muri delle città, su spille e borse; e le sue frasi e i suoi aforismi sulla scienza e sulla vita sono citati ogni giorno. Albert Einstein è il vero scienziato iconico del secolo scorso; il suo nome - anche per chi fatichi a masticare le teorie fisiche - è sinonimo di genio eccentrico (famoso l'aneddoto che vuole il suo guardaroba pieno di completi identici così da non perdere tempo al mattino a pensare come vestirsi); saggezza bonaria; ma anche risolutezza (si pensi a quando scrisse al presidente Roosevelt invitandolo a dare il via a quello che sarebbe stato il programma nucleare americano che portò alla prima bomba atomica). II suo aspetto in apparenza trasandato ha ispirato decine di trasposizioni cinematografiche con al centro uno scienziato bizzarro (basti pensare al mitico Doc di Ritorno al futuro, il cui cane non a caso si chiama Einstein!). Con la sola forza della sua mente e delle sue idee Einstein ha rivoluzionato il modo in cui concepiamo e interpretiamo il mondo e l'universo, e se basta una sola formula dal potenziale dirompente - E= mc² - per decretarne l'immensa eredità intellettuale, l'immagine che oggi percepiamo supera quella del semplice scienziato. br. Nella scienza i capolavori sono rari come nelle arti. Per essere tali, in loro la perfezione deve uguagliare la dirompenza. Perché rivoluzionano il mondo, alla lettera. John Gribbin non esita a spendere la parola "capolavoro" per la teoria generale della relatività, che lo stesso Albert Einstein definì "la scoperta più preziosa della mia vita... una teoria di incomparabile bellezza". Quando la elaborò nella forma che conosciamo era trascorso un decennio dal 1905, ritenuto concordemente dagli studiosi il suo annus mirabilis: pochi mesi leggendari durante i quali, in un impeto di creatività scientifica che non si era più registrato dai tempi di Newton, aveva concepito anche la teoria ristretta della relatività e scoperto la legge dell'effetto fotoelettrico, che gli avrebbe poi valso il premio Nobel nel 1921. Gribbin tuttavia rivede l'opinione comune, posticipando il vero miracolo dal 1905 al 1915, quindi alla generalizzazione della teoria, questa sì in sconvolgente anticipo sui tempi della ricerca. L'estensione della relatività dagli oggetti che si muovono a velocità costante in linea retta al moto accelerato e alla gravità compie il prodigio di descrivere il nostro Universo e tutto lo spaziotempo che contiene. Nel secolo trascorso da allora, ciò che suscitò sconcerto si è via via consolidato, soprattutto durante gli ultimi cinquant'anni, come una delle teorie più comprovate dell'intera storia della scienza.

Ma questi due giganti non si limitarono a opporsi, cercarono di formulare una teoria onnicomprensiva che rendesse nuovamente sensato l'Universo. Il fisico Paul Halpern racconta la vicenda di come Einstein e Schrödinger abbiano cercato di trascendere gli aspetti bizzarri dei quanti, dando ai lettori spunti originali circa la storia della fisica e raccontando l'impresa di due scienziati le cui ossessioni ne hanno guidato il progresso.
