Albert Einstein’s Warning to American Jews: Do Not Be Complacent But Actively Combat Fascism and Discrimination In America Now While It is Not Too Late
“Unfortunately the present Jewish leaders do not understand the seriousness of the situation much like German Jews in the pre-Hitlerite era. They believe that they are able to put an end to the problem by being silent and disregarding it…†He also discusses his article “The Particle Problem in the General Theory of Relativity†which postulated the famous Einstein-Rosen Bridge known today as the “wormhole’ solution of general relativity†The question is often asked how the German Jews could have found themselves powerless to combat the rise of Naziism. In the late 1920s and into the 1930s Germany’s Jews – some 500000 people – made up less than one percent of the German population. But it was a visible one percent. Most considered themselves loyal Germans linked to the German way of life by language and culture. They excelled in science literature the arts and economic enterprise. 24% of Germany’s Nobel Prize winners were Jewish. Moreover conversion intermarriage and declining birth rates led some to believe that Jewish life was destined to disappear as Jews eagerly acculturated and sought to be assimilated into the German people. Even as the Nazi ideology of anti-Semitism gained strength there was a widespread belief amongst Jews that the role they played within industry and trade their contributions to the German economy and their friendships with Germans generally would shield them from being excluded from German life. Many thought it was a phase that would pass like other waves of anti-Semitism that had preceded it. Then as the Nazis came into power they did not all at once impose their full panoply of measures against the Jews. Instead it was drip drip drip a little then a little more then a little more. After a few years of that the Jews had been effectively isolated their friends silenced and they were stuck at the bottom with no way out. Einstein saw all this happen before his eyes as he lived in Berlin before immigrating to the United States in 1933. When he got to America he found discrimination against the Jews there as well though of a less brutal kind. All but one medical school in the United States had imposed quotas on Jewish matriculants and most of the best private universities such a Princeton did the same with admissions. Many hotels and clubs were closed to Jews. Fascism in Europe was just beginning to spread into the U.S. and anti-Semitic tirades were on the radio made by such men as Father Coughlin and Henry Ford. Yet Einstein found many American Jews complacent. On July 1 1935 Einstein and Nathan Rosen published in the “Physical Review†of the American Institute of Physics their article “The Particle Problem in the General Theory of Relativity†which investigated the possibility of an atomistic theory of matter and electricity which while excluding singularities of the field makes use of no other variables than the gμν of the Einsteinian general relativity theory and the ϕμ of the Maxwell theory. By the consideration of a simple example they were led to modify slightly the gravitational equations which then permit regular solutions for the static spherically symmetric case. These solutions involve the mathematical representation of physical space by a space of two identical sheets a particle being represented by a “bridge†connecting these sheets. This became famous as the Einstein-Rosen Bridge which physicist John Moffat writes is “known today as the ‘wormhole’ solution of general relativity. Beloved on science-fiction writers the wormhole was Einstein’s attempt to remove the problem of unphysical singularities in his gravitation theory. The wormhole is a mathematical portal in space-time allowing a space traveller to move more or less instantaneously through the universe and come out in a distant part of it or into another universe.†Paul S. Epstein was a physicist who wrote a series of important papers on quantum theory and its applications. In his classic paper on the theory of the Stark effect the splitting of the spectral lines in a hydrogen atom by a strong electric field he worked out the quantization rules in an invariant form and then used them to calculate the splitting of the hydrogen lines. The splitting effect first observed by Johannes Stark in 1913 could not be explained along classical lines. Showing that Niels Bohr’s Quantum description of the hydrogen atom could solve the problem made Epstein’s reputation as a theoretical physicist. The match between his theoretical predictions and Stark’s data furnished striking support for the Rutherford/Bohr atomic theory. Like Einstein Epstein came from a Jewish family in Europe. Epstein immigrated to the United States and joined the faculty of the new California Institute of Technology in 1921 as professor of theoretical physics. Richard C. Tolman was a physical chemist and physicist who demonstrated the electron to be the charge-carrying particle in the flow of electricity in metals and determined its mass. Like Epstein he was at CalTech serving as a professor and dean of graduate studies. He published two treatises on relativity theory one in 1934. His articles often appeared in the “Physical Reviewâ€. Dr. S. M. Melamed was a philosophy professor and editor of the Zionist publication â€Reflex.†Einstein’s love of sailing is well known. In the summer of 1935 Einstein rented a home in Old Lyme Connecticut called the “White House†and did his sailing from there. Typed Letter Signed on his personal letterhead Old Lyme June 8 1935 Epstein regarding the plight of Jews and particularly Jewish intellectuals in the United States and the necessity for Jewish teaching institutions. He also discusses his “Particle Problem in the General Theory of Relativity.†“I was extremely happy to gather from your letter that you take such an active interest in creating vital connections among the Jewish intellectuals in this country as well as to read that the excellent writer Melamed has taken in hand the editorship of the journal ‘Reflex’. I will be happy to join the editorial board of course. The hostile attitude of universities towards Jewish teaching staff and students has been increasing perilously even though it manifests in a genteel or hypocritical manner. Unless we are able in time to awaken the understanding that establishing Jewish teaching institutions is an absolute imperative the Jews in this country will become intellectually proletarianized. Unfortunately the current Jewish leaders do not comprehend the seriousness of the situation similar to the German Jews in the time before Hitler. They believe that they are able to put an end to the problem by being silent and disregarding it and they thus miss the time for creating places of support. This is not just true for the functions of the educational system of course but in economic and social terms as well. Much to my surprise I discovered that the centro-symmetric solutions for the gravitational field as well as the electromagnetic field are singularity-free if we allow for hyper-surfaces on which the determinant of handwritten: g n r disappears. I sent a copy of the manuscript to Tolman; perhaps you will be able to have him tell you about it in more detail. I do not think it impossible that this might prove to be the nucleus for a theory of the atomistic structure of matter and electricity. She is a very sympathetic and assiduous person…Miss Gutmann has already had a year’s successful work at a medical-chemical laboratory in Germany. I should be very glad if Miss Gutmann could find assistance in her endeavor.†Einstein was already a famous physicist by the time Adolf Hitler rose to power in January 1933. Often personally threatened by the Nazis and seeing the handwriting on the wall as the Nazis gained in influence he had left Germany for the United States the previous month and was personally out of Hitler’s reach. Nonetheless in absentia his civil liberties were suspended and he was barred from resuming his professorship at the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Nazis raided his property and burned his books. In February Einstein told a friend“I dare not enter Germany because of Hitler.†Einstein quickly sought refuge in the United States settling in the academic hub of Princeton NJ. At the time there were no programs or no aid agencies to promote or ensure the safety of fellow refugees Einstein took matters into his own hands. He and his wife made visa applications for other German Jews and personally vouched for refugees fleeing Nazi rule. “I am privileged by fate to live here in Princeton†he wrote to the Queen of Belgium. “In this small university town the chaotic voices of human strife barely penetrate. I am almost ashamed to be living in such peace while all the rest struggle and suffer.†In July 1933 upon Einstein’s request a committee of 51 American artists intellectuals and political leaders came together to form the International Relief Association. Among them were the philosopher John Dewey the writer John Dos Passos and the theologian Reinhold Niebuhr. Other prominent citizens including First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt soon joined the effort. Its mission as The New York Times reported on July 24 1933 was to "assist Germans suffering from the policies of the Hitler regime." Another group of leaders formed the Emergency Rescue Committee when Paris fell to the Nazis in 1940. As the crisis deepened into World War II the two groups merged. And so came into being the organization that would grow into the International Rescue Committee. But Einstein did much more. He tried to persuade political leaders in the United States and Europe to take action to help the Jewish populations at risk. He worked tirelessly to help Jewish refugees escape the Nazis and to find them places of refuge and employment. Many immigrants to the United States during the mid to late 1930s were Jewish between 1939 and 1940 more than half of all immigrants were Jews most of them refugees fleeing persecution in Europe. However those applying for visas - both to the U.S. and other countries - had to be sponsored by two citizens of that country preferably relatives or employers. Einstein with his connections in academia and personal relationships with powerful people willingly assumed a lion’s share of the responsibility for finding jobs and sponsors. He helped so many that he should be thought of as much as a humanitarian as a scientist. A few of the people he aided were personal friends some were acquaintances or known to him simply by reputation but the vast majority were people he’d never heard of until their situations were put in front of him by others. However in a few rare instances the refugee issue was brought home - quite literally home - to him in a personal way when one of his relatives needed such assistance. Einstein’s wife Elsa had a sister Hermione whose granddaughter was Marie-Louise Gutmann. Thus Marie-Louise was the great-niece of Albert Einstein through his wife. But since Elsa was Albert’s first cousin he was doubly related to Marie-Louise through his own mother; cousins twice in fact. Marie-Louise lived during her youth in Frankfurt where her father was Director of the Frankfurt Branch of Commerce Bank. With her family she immigrated to the United States in 1937 intending to settle in New York City. But she needed to further her education or find employment and asked for his uncle’s help; help he willingly gave. Typed letter signed on his Institute of Advanced Study letterhead Princeton April 27 1937 addressed “To whom it may concernâ€. “My niece Miss Marie-Louise Gutmann of Frankfort on Main Germany has - like so many others - sought refuge in this country. She is a very sympathetic and assiduous person and would be happy if she could complete her education through studies at an American college. Miss Gutmann has already had a year’s successful work at a medical-chemical laboratory in Germany. I should be very glad if Miss Gutmann could find assistance in her endeavor. Her intellectual and personal qualities which are known to me personally would in my opinion fully justify such help.†It’s not known whether Marie-Louise went to college for a short time she was already 25 years old or just went right to employment. We suspect the latter as she found employment in the science field working for many years as a histologist at Montefiore Medical Center and then Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx NY. Einstein had connections at Montefiore and this letter likely opened that door. She became a U.S. citizen and married George A. Elbert of New Rochelle NY in 1940 with whom she had two children. She lived for 94 years dying in 2013. This was acquired from the heir of the refugee agency and has never been offered for sale before unknown

Princeton NJ: Halsman 1947. Photograph. Fine. ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS IMAGES OF EINSTEIN. Philippe Halsman's now iconic 1947 photograph of Einstein has become not only one of the most celebrated images of Einstein but one of the most recognizable images of the twentieth century. It was used to a 1966 US postage stamp of Einstein and was featured on the cover of Time Magazine honoring Einstein as the "Person of the Century".

 The photographer Halsman in his book Philippe Halsman: A Retrospective explained the circumstances of the photo: I admired Albert Einstein more than anyone I ever photographed not only as the genius who single-handedly had changed the foundation of modern physics but even more as a rare and idealistic human being.
 Personally I owed him an immense debt of gratitude. After the fall of France it was through his personal intervention that my name was added to the list of artists and scientists who in danger of being captured by the Nazis were given emergency visas to the United States.
 After my miraculous rescue I went to Princeton to thank Einstein and I remember vividly my first impression. Instead of a frail scientist I saw a deep-chested man with a resonant voice and a hearty laugh.
 The question of how to capture the essence of such a man in a portrait filled me with apprehension. Finally in 1947 I had the courage to bring on one of my visits my Halsman camera and a few floodlights. After tea I asked for permission to set up my lights in Einstein's study. The professor sat down and started peacefully working on his mathematical calculations. I took a few pictures. Ordinarily Einstein did not like photographers whom he called Lichtaffen light monkeys. But he cooperated because I was his guest and after all he had helped save me.
 Suddenly looking into my camera he started talking. He spoke about his despair that his formula E=mc2 and his letter to President Roosevelt had made the atomic bomb possible that his scientific search had resulted in the death of so many human beings. "Have you read" he asked "that powerful voices in the United States are demanding that the bomb be dropped on Russia now before the Russians have time to perfect their own" With my entire being I felt how much this infinitely good and compassionate man was suffering from the knowledge that he had helped to put in the hands of politicians a monstrous weapon of devastation and death.
 He grew silent. His eyes had a look of immense sadness. There was a question and a reproach in them.
 The spell of this moment almost paralyzed me. Then with an effort I released the shutter of my camera. Einstein looked up and I asked him "So you don't believe that there will ever be peace"
 "No" he answered. "As long as there will be man there will be wars." Silver prints of this photograph have been printed in different sizes over the years. Double matted and framed the entire piece measures 13.5 inches by 16.5 inches. An exceptional piece. Polish-American Jewish painter Lionel S. Reiss immigrated with his parents to the United States in 1898 at the age of four joining the ranks of other Eastern European Jews fleeing their native countries at the start of the 20th century. His family settled in New York's Lower East Side where Reiss would ultimately spend the majority of his life and become an established portraitist particularly known for his intimate portraits of Jewish people. In 1938 Reiss published his book My Models Were Jews in which he argued against the idea of a singular "Jewish Ethnicity" and that the Jewish people were rather a cultural group composed of a number of significantly diverse communities. unknown
