‎Albert Einstein’s Warning to American Jews: Do Not Be Complacent But Actively Combat Fascism and Discrimination In America Now While It is Not Too Late‎

‎“Unfortunately the present Jewish leaders do not understand the seriousness of the situation much like German Jews in the pre-Hitlerite era. They believe that they are able to put an end to the problem by being silent and disregarding it…†He also discusses his article “The Particle Problem in the General Theory of Relativity†which postulated the famous Einstein-Rosen Bridge known today as the “wormhole’ solution of general relativity†The question is often asked how the German Jews could have found themselves powerless to combat the rise of Naziism. In the late 1920s and into the 1930s Germany’s Jews – some 500000 people – made up less than one percent of the German population. But it was a visible one percent. Most considered themselves loyal Germans linked to the German way of life by language and culture. They excelled in science literature the arts and economic enterprise. 24% of Germany’s Nobel Prize winners were Jewish. Moreover conversion intermarriage and declining birth rates led some to believe that Jewish life was destined to disappear as Jews eagerly acculturated and sought to be assimilated into the German people. Even as the Nazi ideology of anti-Semitism gained strength there was a widespread belief amongst Jews that the role they played within industry and trade their contributions to the German economy and their friendships with Germans generally would shield them from being excluded from German life. Many thought it was a phase that would pass like other waves of anti-Semitism that had preceded it. Then as the Nazis came into power they did not all at once impose their full panoply of measures against the Jews. Instead it was drip drip drip a little then a little more then a little more. After a few years of that the Jews had been effectively isolated their friends silenced and they were stuck at the bottom with no way out. Einstein saw all this happen before his eyes as he lived in Berlin before immigrating to the United States in 1933. When he got to America he found discrimination against the Jews there as well though of a less brutal kind. All but one medical school in the United States had imposed quotas on Jewish matriculants and most of the best private universities such a Princeton did the same with admissions. Many hotels and clubs were closed to Jews. Fascism in Europe was just beginning to spread into the U.S. and anti-Semitic tirades were on the radio made by such men as Father Coughlin and Henry Ford. Yet Einstein found many American Jews complacent. On July 1 1935 Einstein and Nathan Rosen published in the “Physical Review†of the American Institute of Physics their article “The Particle Problem in the General Theory of Relativity†which investigated the possibility of an atomistic theory of matter and electricity which while excluding singularities of the field makes use of no other variables than the gμν of the Einsteinian general relativity theory and the ϕμ of the Maxwell theory. By the consideration of a simple example they were led to modify slightly the gravitational equations which then permit regular solutions for the static spherically symmetric case. These solutions involve the mathematical representation of physical space by a space of two identical sheets a particle being represented by a “bridge†connecting these sheets. This became famous as the Einstein-Rosen Bridge which physicist John Moffat writes is “known today as the ‘wormhole’ solution of general relativity. Beloved on science-fiction writers the wormhole was Einstein’s attempt to remove the problem of unphysical singularities in his gravitation theory. The wormhole is a mathematical portal in space-time allowing a space traveller to move more or less instantaneously through the universe and come out in a distant part of it or into another universe.†Paul S. Epstein was a physicist who wrote a series of important papers on quantum theory and its applications. In his classic paper on the theory of the Stark effect the splitting of the spectral lines in a hydrogen atom by a strong electric field he worked out the quantization rules in an invariant form and then used them to calculate the splitting of the hydrogen lines. The splitting effect first observed by Johannes Stark in 1913 could not be explained along classical lines. Showing that Niels Bohr’s Quantum description of the hydrogen atom could solve the problem made Epstein’s reputation as a theoretical physicist. The match between his theoretical predictions and Stark’s data furnished striking support for the Rutherford/Bohr atomic theory. Like Einstein Epstein came from a Jewish family in Europe. Epstein immigrated to the United States and joined the faculty of the new California Institute of Technology in 1921 as professor of theoretical physics. Richard C. Tolman was a physical chemist and physicist who demonstrated the electron to be the charge-carrying particle in the flow of electricity in metals and determined its mass. Like Epstein he was at CalTech serving as a professor and dean of graduate studies. He published two treatises on relativity theory one in 1934. His articles often appeared in the “Physical Reviewâ€. Dr. S. M. Melamed was a philosophy professor and editor of the Zionist publication â€Reflex.†Einstein’s love of sailing is well known. In the summer of 1935 Einstein rented a home in Old Lyme Connecticut called the “White House†and did his sailing from there. Typed Letter Signed on his personal letterhead Old Lyme June 8 1935 Epstein regarding the plight of Jews and particularly Jewish intellectuals in the United States and the necessity for Jewish teaching institutions. He also discusses his “Particle Problem in the General Theory of Relativity.†“I was extremely happy to gather from your letter that you take such an active interest in creating vital connections among the Jewish intellectuals in this country as well as to read that the excellent writer Melamed has taken in hand the editorship of the journal ‘Reflex’. I will be happy to join the editorial board of course. The hostile attitude of universities towards Jewish teaching staff and students has been increasing perilously even though it manifests in a genteel or hypocritical manner. Unless we are able in time to awaken the understanding that establishing Jewish teaching institutions is an absolute imperative the Jews in this country will become intellectually proletarianized. Unfortunately the current Jewish leaders do not comprehend the seriousness of the situation similar to the German Jews in the time before Hitler. They believe that they are able to put an end to the problem by being silent and disregarding it and they thus miss the time for creating places of support. This is not just true for the functions of the educational system of course but in economic and social terms as well. Much to my surprise I discovered that the centro-symmetric solutions for the gravitational field as well as the electromagnetic field are singularity-free if we allow for hyper-surfaces on which the determinant of handwritten: g n r disappears. I sent a copy of the manuscript to Tolman; perhaps you will be able to have him tell you about it in more detail. I do not think it impossible that this might prove to be the nucleus for a theory of the atomistic structure of matter and electricity. Warm greetings to you to your wife and your little daughter.†An extraordinary letter relating to relativity Hitler and warning that American Jews must actively combat anti-Semitism or risk suffering the fate of German Jews unknown‎

‎Albert Einstein Assists His Own Niece - a Refugee from the Holocaust in Germany - Find a Place in Her New Home the United States‎

‎He successfully seeks an educational or job opportunity for her leading to her career as a histologist This was acquired from the heir of the refugee agency and has never been offered for sale before. “My niece Miss Marie-Louise Gutmann of Frankfort on Main Germany has - like so many others - sought refuge in this country. She is a very sympathetic and assiduous person…Miss Gutmann has already had a year’s successful work at a medical-chemical laboratory in Germany. I should be very glad if Miss Gutmann could find assistance in her endeavor.†Einstein was already a famous physicist by the time Adolf Hitler rose to power in January 1933. Often personally threatened by the Nazis and seeing the handwriting on the wall as the Nazis gained in influence he had left Germany for the United States the previous month and was personally out of Hitler’s reach. Nonetheless in absentia his civil liberties were suspended and he was barred from resuming his professorship at the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Nazis raided his property and burned his books. In February Einstein told a friend“I dare not enter Germany because of Hitler.†Einstein quickly sought refuge in the United States settling in the academic hub of Princeton NJ. At the time there were no programs or no aid agencies to promote or ensure the safety of fellow refugees Einstein took matters into his own hands. He and his wife made visa applications for other German Jews and personally vouched for refugees fleeing Nazi rule. “I am privileged by fate to live here in Princeton†he wrote to the Queen of Belgium. “In this small university town the chaotic voices of human strife barely penetrate. I am almost ashamed to be living in such peace while all the rest struggle and suffer.†In July 1933 upon Einstein’s request a committee of 51 American artists intellectuals and political leaders came together to form the International Relief Association. Among them were the philosopher John Dewey the writer John Dos Passos and the theologian Reinhold Niebuhr. Other prominent citizens including First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt soon joined the effort. Its mission as The New York Times reported on July 24 1933 was to "assist Germans suffering from the policies of the Hitler regime." Another group of leaders formed the Emergency Rescue Committee when Paris fell to the Nazis in 1940. As the crisis deepened into World War II the two groups merged. And so came into being the organization that would grow into the International Rescue Committee. But Einstein did much more. He tried to persuade political leaders in the United States and Europe to take action to help the Jewish populations at risk. He worked tirelessly to help Jewish refugees escape the Nazis and to find them places of refuge and employment. Many immigrants to the United States during the mid to late 1930s were Jewish between 1939 and 1940 more than half of all immigrants were Jews most of them refugees fleeing persecution in Europe. However those applying for visas - both to the U.S. and other countries - had to be sponsored by two citizens of that country preferably relatives or employers. Einstein with his connections in academia and personal relationships with powerful people willingly assumed a lion’s share of the responsibility for finding jobs and sponsors. He helped so many that he should be thought of as much as a humanitarian as a scientist. A few of the people he aided were personal friends some were acquaintances or known to him simply by reputation but the vast majority were people he’d never heard of until their situations were put in front of him by others. However in a few rare instances the refugee issue was brought home - quite literally home - to him in a personal way when one of his relatives needed such assistance. Einstein’s wife Elsa had a sister Hermione whose granddaughter was Marie-Louise Gutmann. Thus Marie-Louise was the great-niece of Albert Einstein through his wife. But since Elsa was Albert’s first cousin he was doubly related to Marie-Louise through his own mother; cousins twice in fact. Marie-Louise lived during her youth in Frankfurt where her father was Director of the Frankfurt Branch of Commerce Bank. With her family she immigrated to the United States in 1937 intending to settle in New York City. But she needed to further her education or find employment and asked for his uncle’s help; help he willingly gave. Typed letter signed on his Institute of Advanced Study letterhead Princeton April 27 1937 addressed “To whom it may concernâ€. “My niece Miss Marie-Louise Gutmann of Frankfort on Main Germany has - like so many others - sought refuge in this country. She is a very sympathetic and assiduous person and would be happy if she could complete her education through studies at an American college. Miss Gutmann has already had a year’s successful work at a medical-chemical laboratory in Germany. I should be very glad if Miss Gutmann could find assistance in her endeavor. Her intellectual and personal qualities which are known to me personally would in my opinion fully justify such help.†It’s not known whether Marie-Louise went to college for a short time she was already 25 years old or just went right to employment. We suspect the latter as she found employment in the science field working for many years as a histologist at Montefiore Medical Center and then Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx NY. Einstein had connections at Montefiore and this letter likely opened that door. She became a U.S. citizen and married George A. Elbert of New Rochelle NY in 1940 with whom she had two children. She lived for 94 years dying in 2013. This was acquired from the heir of the refugee agency and has never been offered for sale before unknown‎

‎Vier Vorlesungen ber Relativittstheorie gehalten im Mai 1921 an der Universitt Princeton Braunschweig: Viewer & Sohn 1922 WITH the English translation The Meaning of Relativity Fourth Edition Including the Generalization of Gravitation Theory Princeton: New Jersey 1953‎

‎1922 FIRST GERMAN EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF EINSTEIN'S FOUR LECTURES ON RELATIVITY DELIVERED AT PRINCETON UNIVERSITY IN THE SPRING OF 1921 Norman 697; Weil 124. Included with this is a 1953 fourth edition hardbound with original wraps of the English translation of those lectures The Meaning of Relativity inclusive significantly of both the Appendix for the Second Edition and Appendix II: Generalization of Gravitation Theory. The 1953 fourth edition of Appendix II is Weil 235 Einstein's last attempt at and most important final formulation of the topic of greatest important to him: the unification of his general theory of relativity with electromagnetism. "This was Einstein's ultimate response to the mechanical-electromagnetic crisis in physical theory he had first talked about in the opening of his 1905light quantum-paper" Nandor D.S.B. p. 330. The English titles of Einstein's four lectures are: "Space and Time in Pre-Relativity Physics" "The Theory of Special Relativity" "The General Theory of Relativity I" "The General Theory of Relativity II". While the most important item is obviously the German first edition fourth edition specifically of the English translation Appendix II: Generalization of Gravitation Theory is an important work unto itself. Appendix II did not begin appearing in The Mean of Relativity until the 1949 third edition; he revised it for the 1950 edition and then heavily revised it for the volume offered there the 1953 fourth edition. It is in Appendix II that Einstein "described his most recent work on unification" Pais. In his own words "The last step of the theory concerns the unification of the field concept which is characterized by the transition to non-symmetric fields. The difficulty in the choice of the field laws has been fully overcome only in the last few months" Einstein 1953. It is Appendix II that The New York Times hailed- though of course Einstein had no hand in their title - under the heading "New Einstein theory gives a master key to the universe". CONDITION & DETAILS: 1 Braunschweig: Viewer & Sohn Vier Vorlesungen 1922. Octavo. 9 x 6 inches; 225 x 150mm. 2 70pp. 1. ‎Einstein: My Work in Relativity Supplanted Newtonian Mechanics and Changed Our Notion of Space and Time Forever‎

‎In classical mechanics space and time were completed existences which had to be presupposed as real a priori in order to give meaning to the laws of motion. It was a reality in the same sense as the reality of matter; even governing the latter. In this sense Kant was entirely wrong." The fullest summation we have seen by Einstein comparing relativity to Newtonian concepts of space and time Immanuel Kant took both Euclidean geometry and the Newtonian laws of motion to be synthetic a priori principles which from Kant’s point of view function as necessary presuppositions for applying our fundamental concepts of space time matter and motion to our sensible experience of the natural world meaning they are fixed necessary conditions. This idea rested on the absolute nature of space and time the work of Newton and the relationship between geometry and physics. In 1905 while a young patent clerk and physicist in Bern Switzerland Albert Einstein obtained his doctorate and published a paper that explained his newly developed Special Theory of Relativity. This unlocked many mysteries of the universe and introduced the world to “e=mc2†equating mass and the speed of light with energy. It established that time and space are not fixed and in fact change to maintain a constant speed of light regardless of the relative motions of sources and observers. Just 10 years later in 1915 Einstein published his General Theory of Relativity which described the universe as a four-dimensional continuum with time added as the fourth dimension where gravitational effects are explained by the warping of space-time. In this theory Einstein incorporated gravity as a geometric property of space-time. The impact of Einstein’s work between 1905 and 1915 challenged many principles of physics that had been accepted for centuries. In 1921 he won the Nobel Prize for his work. Time Magazine named him the Person of the Century for the 20th century for his discoveries in relativity and space-time. Einstein is the most important scientist since Isaac Newton and probably the most famous in history. Space and time were considered relativistic more subjective and not the fixed a priori notions that had long permeated the mathematical and scientific worlds. Max Fischler was a California scientist who was interested in the implications of this distinction: were space and time now to be studied together in this context only or were the nature of space and the nature of time different In special relativity what appears simultaneous to one person might not to another – they are relative. You cannot separate space and time; they occur subjectively and semi-dependently but are not tied to the content of that space. With General Relativity space-time remains but matter warps it. It’s a field like the sheet of a trampoline but reacts to matter. One needs all four dimensions of space-time and without them the others don’t exist. You need matter for space. On September 5 1954 he wrote to Einstein: “…Can anything in your theory of Relativity be said to throw new light on the nature of space and time themselves Or must we rest satisfied with the purely new logical treatment of these conceptions In other words does the new view of space and time as space-time carry any new meaning ontologically beyond the purely mathematical and logical relationship between the two. Or to put it differently: When Minkowski in his famous words said ‘Space by itself and time by itself must not sink into the mere shadows and only a kind of union of the two can preserve an independent existence’ did he not attach some new real meaning to the ‘spacetime’ which the old independent notions of space and time could not convey If so in what does this new meaning consist…†Four days later Einstein replied in this letter: Typed letter signed in German on his personal blind embossed letterhead Princeton September 9. 1954 to Max Fishler. “The expression cited in the second paragraph only signifies the wish for logical clarity in the formal expressions. De facto the justification for concepts lies in their ability to comprehend the empirically given. “In classical mechanics space and time were completed existences which had to be presupposed as real a priori in order to give meaning to the laws of motion. It was a reality in the same sense as the reality of matter; even governing the latter. In this sense Kant was entirely wrong. “The case was the same as regards the Special Theory of Relativity only that an objective separation of space and time was abandoned in the sense that there could no longer be any objective simultaneity. Here too the four dimensional space is a reality independently of the physical content of space. “Regarding the General Theory of Relativity however this is principally different. What we call “space†is here only an extension of a Field dimensionality hence no longer independent of the content of space. It is real in the same sense as matter but has no real existence independently of matter. When the field is taken away there does not remain any space but just nothing.†Letters of Einstein directly relating to relativity are increasingly uncommon and this one of the finest such letters we have had unknown‎

‎In a Detailed and Unpublished Letter on Classical and Quantum Physics Albert Einstein Issues a Treatise – a Scientific Explanation – Underpinning His Belief That the Universe Cannot Be Random‎

‎In a Detailed and Unpublished Letter on Classical and Quantum Physics Albert Einstein Issues a Treatise – a Scientific Explanation – Underpinning His Belief That the Universe Cannot Be Random This remarkable scientific letter shows Einstein’s mind at work and his lifelong quest to not only explain but to validate. In this letter from Einstein to David Bohm Einstein discusses the importance of connecting a key principle of the relatively new theory of quantum mechanics the “Born interpretation†to physical quantities that can be measured in the real world. To him it is essential that mathematical theories be connected to measurable quantities. In this letter Einstein’s uneasiness with quantum mechanics is apparent saying that validation of the seemingly random quantum mechanics “…can only be done on the basis of classical mechanics.†Without this validation quantum theory has essentially “no controllable meaning.†Max Born was a renowned physicist who was crucial for the development of quantum mechanics and also the Ph.D. supervisor of many important physicists including J. Robert Oppenheimer. Quantum mechanics describes the weird behavior of tiny subatomic particles. It’s also the guiding theory that led to critical technologies like nuclear power MRI machines and transistors in computers and phones. One of Born’s biggest contributions to quantum mechanics was the interpretation of the probability density which is a mathematical operation performed on the “psi-function†in Einstein’s words to predict the most probable physical quantities of a quantum particle. Einstein believed that probabilities only make sense if you can determine the values that they predict independently by measurement. This is easy to do in classical Newtonian mechanics the physics of big things in everyday life. But Einstein said we can’t measure it for something like a “bound electron†i.e. an electron in an atom. In order to interpret Born’s probability density function you need to connect the mathematics to real values. Einstein’s correspondence with Born on this subject is published and famous. To Einstein the universe is observable and measurable. When confronted with one of the principle tenets of Quantum Mechanics Einstein remarked now famously “Quantum mechanics is very imposing. But an inner voice tells me that it is not the real McCoy. The theory delivers a lot but hardly brings us closer to the secret of the Old One God. I for one am convinced that He does not throw dice.†This statement was made in one of those significant letters to Born. What he meant here is that rules of science cannot be random and in the rolling of dice we would have to accept unknown variables and therefore be unable to predict precisely via objective measurements. Therefore in Quantum Mechanics as in gambling an uncertainty of measurement exists. And to Einstein the universe is observable and measurable. He did not object to Quantum Mechanics per se; indeed he made notable contributions. But he eschewed any reliance on what was not observable and knowable. David Joseph Bohm was an American scientist who has been described as one of the most significant theoretical physicists of the 20th century and who contributed unorthodox ideas to quantum theory neuropsychology and the philosophy of mind. His first book Quantum Theory published in 1951 was well received by Einstein among others. But Bohm became dissatisfied with the orthodox interpretation of quantum theory he had written about in that book.Bohm’s aim was not to set out a deterministic mechanical viewpoint but to show that it was possible to attribute properties to an underlying reality in contrast to the conventional approach. He began to develop his own interpretation the De Broglie–Bohm theory also called the Pilot wave theory the predictions of which agreed perfectly with the non-deterministic quantum theory. He initially referred to his approach as a hidden variable theory. Bohm originally hoped that hidden variables could provide a local causal objective description that would resolve or eliminate many of the paradoxes of Quantum Mechanics the measurement problem and the collapse of the wavefunction. However Bell’s theorem complicates this hope as it demonstrates that there can be no local hidden variable theory that is compatible with the predictions of Quantum Mechanics. The Bohmian interpretation is causal but not local. Albert Einstein who had suggested that Bohm search for a realist alternative to the prevailing Copenhagen approach did not consider Bohm’s interpretation to be a satisfactory answer to the quantum question. The Copenhagen interpretation is an expression of the meaning of Quantum Mechanics that was largely devised in the years 1925 to 1927 by Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg. It remains one of the most commonly taught interpretations of Quantum Mechanics. According to the Copenhagen interpretation physical systems generally do not have definite properties prior to being measured and Quantum Mechanics can only predict the probabilities that measurements will produce certain results. The act of measurement affects the system causing the set of probabilities to reduce to only one of the possible values immediately after the measurement. In classical mechanics a particle has at every moment an exact position and an exact momentum. These values change deterministically as the particle moves according to Newton’s laws. Under the Copenhagen interpretation of Quantum Mechanics particles do not have exactly determined properties and when they are measured the result is randomly drawn from a probability distribution. The Schrödinger equation predicts what the probability distributions are but fundamentally cannot predict the exact result of each measurement. Typed letter signed on his blind embossed letterhead February 17 1953 Professor Bohm. “Dear Bohm: I thank you very much for the prompt reaction to my little article. I did of course not expect that you would agree with me. For scarcely anyone is inclined to abandon an enterprise in which le has invested a great deal of work. “I do not want to answer your letter in detail although it deserves it very much. Only a short remark concerning the interpretation of Born’s standpoint: “According to Born the physical meaning of the psi-function follows: it determines probabilities f.i. for the value of impulses. this makes sense only if the impulse is defined independently of the mathematical theory by some feasible measurement. This can only be done on the basis of classical mechanics. F.i. if one has calculated the impulse of a bound electron on the basis of a psi-function then this result has no controllable meaning. For there is no possibility to measure such a thing not even approximately. However if one has to do with a makro-object which is at least temporarily approximately free then one is able to determine experimentally at least approximately its impulsef.i. through two successive snapshots or through radar. If it is at all possible to attribute meaning to Born’s interpretation then the impulse the probability of which appears in the theory has to be put equal to the impulse thus measured. Classical approximate measurement of the impulse is however in my example very well feasible without first removing the walls and then waiting some time. Born’s probability therefore has to be interpreted as relative to the impulse thus measured if this probability is to have any meaning at all. “The vanishing of position-probability for the nodes offers no difficulty though it is true that this fact excludes the interpretation of the process as a motion in the strict sense of the word. For the factual process will only approximately be describable as a motion as f.i. the action of a gas upon a small part of the wall is describable only approximately by the concept of pressure. “With regard to the publication of your remarks in the Born volume I have some scruples the reason for which you will readily understand. I have sent a copy of my article to you but not to de Broglie because this would have seemed to me somewhat pretentious. If therefore your answer would be published together with my remarks without de Broglie having had the possibility to do the same he might feel it as an unkindness from my side. “This would be avoided if you would send De Broglie my remarks together with your reply adding that you do this with my consent. If you have done this and have received his reaction to it – then the editors of the Born volume can be approached in the matter. I would consider it as reasonable and justified to do so.†This is a remarkably detailed scientific letter mentioning numerous significant physicists containing a hand-drawn symbol and directly relating to his important theories. It is also in a sense his defense of his own work including relativity unknown‎

‎Einstein Albert‎

‎An Extraordinary Letter Connecting Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud Whose Work Had a Revolutionary Impact on How People Perceived Their External and Internal Worlds‎

‎The two most impactful Jewish men off science Einstein: “I am an eager admirer of Freud as an author and thinker…†Charles Darwin Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud were the three giants of science whose theories and discoveries changed the way people thought about themselves and the world around them. Contemporaries their careers spanned just over a century at the end of which the ways of thought at the start were virtually unrecognizable at the end. Darwin’s concepts of evolution and natural selection explained the origin of species without reference to a creator which up-ended the contemporary religious orthodoxy. It weakened the hold of religious dogma and by eliminating God from science made room for strictly scientific explanations of all natural phenomena. Albert Einstein’s theories of relativity led to a complete revision of the way people perceived their external world. Our understanding of space time gravity and indeed every facet of how the cosmos works stems from Einstein. Photoelectric cells television nuclear power space travel and semiconductors all bear his signature; even the global positioning system GPS people tap into on their smartphones relies on Einstein’s theory of general relativity to function accurately. Sigmund Freud’s writings led to a complete revision of the way people perceived their internal world. It changed people’s understanding of human behaviour and pioneered insights into the self and created an awareness that there are engines that drive behavior and motives beyond the obvious. It also changed the way society thought about and dealt with mental illness. Einstein and Freud were Jews and likely the most impactful Jewish men of science the world has known. Both were compelled to flee their native Germany and Austria with the coining to power of the Nazis. Einstein came to the U.S. while Freud went to Britain. Freud wrote his nephew in 1926: “The Jews all over the world boast of my name pairing me with Einstein.†That pairing continues today. Einstein’s younger son Eduard a medical student with an interest in psychoanalysis suffered from mental illness. It was Eduard who urged his father to read the work of Freud. Einstein first met Freud in 1926 and after their meeting Freud observed of Einstein “He is serene assured and courteous understands as much of psychology as I do of physics and so we had a very pleasant chatâ€. Einstein was not then convinced of Freud’s theories. In July 1932 the physicist wrote to the psychoanalyst to open a dialogue about how best to avoid war. Their correspondence was published in the 1933 pamphlet entitled Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud Why War In 1936 Einstein wrote Freud on the occasion of the latter’s 80th birthday indicating he now accepted Freud’s work as accurate: “I am glad that this generation will be granted the opportunity of expressing its respect and gratitude to you as one of its greatest teachers… Until a short time ago I was only aware of the speculative force of your thought and its powerful influence on our contemporary view of the world and was unable to make up my mind about the intrinsic truth of your theories. However I recently happened to hear about certain as such insignificant cases which convinced me that any differing explanation an explanation differing from the doctrine of repression was excluded. This gave me pleasure for it is always a source of pleasure when a great and beautiful idea proves to be correct in actual factâ€. Freud responded “I really must tell you how delighted I am to learn of the change in your judgment…†Theodor Reik was one of Freud’s first students in Vienna and like Einstein and Freud was a Jew who fled the Nazis. He emigrated to the United States in 1938 went on to become a pioneer of psychoanalysis here. He remained Freud’s friend for decades. Reik founded the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis after he was refused membership in the New York Psychoanalytic Society. Despite his lack of a medical degree the principle reason for his rejection Freud himself wrote an essay The Question of Lay Analysis defending Reik’s credentials. The two remained friends until Freud’s death in 1939. Typed letter signed in German Peconic NY where he pursued his hobby of sailing August 3 1938 to Reik less than two months after the latter had arrived in the U.S. expressing his opinion on Freud. “I keep myself completely apart from university circles and cannot take the initiative on your behalf due to a lack of personal contacts. But I am happy to empower you to mention me in your efforts. I am an eager admirer of Freud as an author and thinker and I know that an opinion along the lines of what he has said about you demonstrates a lot. So please dispose of me as far as it makes sense under the stated circumstances. With great esteem A. Einstein.†This is the first letter we have ever seen reach the market in which one of the three giants of science offers an opinion on any of the others. It also associates the two greatest Jewish scientists of the age. unknown‎

‎London: William Clowes and Sons Limited 1902. 8vo. 6 pages plus 2 large folding diagrams. A rare separate offprint printed for the Royal Geographical Society. Publisher's blue titled wrappers string-tied and bearing the society's crest. Some light foxing otherwise in very good and original condition. The results from these observations were crucial in providing confirmation of the General Theory of Relativity which Albert Einstein had proposed in 1916. The author a respected astronomer and well-known authority on comets renders praise to the primary research and calculations of Major S.C.N. Grant in 1896 which forms the basis for his dissertation. With meticulous and detailed instruction Crommelin presents a simplified method to predict and decipher the instantaneous and momentary occultation of stars. He further introduces the application to the Solar Eclipse phenomenon. Exceedingly rare dissertation by an important nineteenth century astronomer. Six years prior to Crommelin's study Grant published a six page report and illustration titled "Diagram for Determining the Parallaxes in Declination and Right Ascension of a Heavenly Body and its Application to the Prediction of Occultations." Crommelin was famed for his computations of cometary orbits. He took part in expeditions to observe total solar eclipses in 1896 1900 1905 1912 and 1927. In 1919 he participated in the solar eclipse expedition to Brazil which aimed to determine the amount of the deflection of light caused by the gravitational field of the Sun. First Edition.
