It ushered a golden period of low-temperature physics and created a new research field within physics which was later to be called quantum liquids. Both paper described a hitherto unknown state of matter: superfluidity of matter. The two discoveries were made independently, Kapitza's paper superseding Allen and Misener's by two weeks. Both studies reported that liquid helium flowed with almost no measurable viscosity below the transition temperature of 2.18 K.""Although the discovery of superfluidity stands as one of the most significant in physics in the 20th century, it was to be 40 years before the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences honoured this seminal discovery with a Nobel prize - an exceptionally long interval. Above the lambda point, there was little flow, but below the lambda temperature, the liquid flowed with such great ease that Kapitsa drew an analogy with superconductors. It was a liquid of zero viscosity. He discovered the phenomenon in 1937 and published a paper about it in Nature in January 1938. He wrote: ""The helium below the lambda point enters a special state that might be called a ‘superfluid.’"" (DSB).Today the theory behind superfluidity is widely used within a broad variety of different subject such as spectroscopic and in high-precision devices as gyroscopes which allow the measurement of some theoretically predicted gravitational effects. ‎FIRST EDITION OF SIX SIGNIFICANT PAPERS IN THE HISTORY OF PHYSICS IN NATURE VOLUME 141 1938. Kapitsa Allen and Misener present the experimental contributions to the problem of superfluidity as well as the announcement of the theory itself. It has always been contentious that while all three scientists clearly discovered superfluidity only Kapitsa received the Nobel Prize. "Superfluidity is the remarkable manifestation of quantum mechanics at the macroscopic level" Balibar Discovery of Superfluidity 1. Kapitsa believed that helium-II had something in common with superconductors and in the paper offered wrote the now famous sentence "by analogy with superconductors.the helium below the lambda point enters a special state which might be called superfluid" Kapitsa 1938. His intuition still stuns physicists because superfluids and superconductors are indeed analogous states of matter. ALLEN & MISENER'S PAPER: At the same time Allen and Misener were working on helium and as a result of their experiments presented a series of measurements in which they concluded: "The observed type of flow. in which the velocity becomes almost independent of pressure most certainly cannot be treated as laminaror even as ordinary turbulent flow. Consequently any known formula cannot from our data give a value of viscosity which would have much meaning A & M 1938. This paper appeared back to back with Kapitsa's in Nature. "It is now understood that helium-II can be described as a two-fluid mixture - part a normal fluid and part a superfluid in which atoms have condensed into a single quantum state. This two fluid model explains Kapitsa's and Allen and Misener results" APS Physics Discovery of Superfluidity. TISZA'S PAPER proposed a "two fluid theory of superfluidity in which one fluid is viscous and carries entropy and the other has zero viscosity and zero entropy. THE KEMMER & BHABHA PAPERS posit the existence of a neutral pion later to be the first unstable particle to be discovered using an accelerator and are published consecutively in this volume. ASTBURY & BELL'S PAPER is a X-ray study on DNA which famously describes the nucleotides as a 'Pile of Pennies'. "James Watson credited the discovery of the double-helical structure of DNA in 1953 to an X-ray diffraction photograph taken by Rosalind Franklin. Historians of molecular biology have long puzzled over a remarkably similar photograph taken two years earlier by the physicist and pioneer of protein structure William T. Astbury.
