A very fine and clean copy. 194 1 pp. � First edition of Wiener's seminal publication on telecommunication engineering in which he coined the term "cybernetics". "The revolutionary aspect of this work can hardly be underestimated." Origins of Cyberspace. The present work was the first conventionally published book as opposed to technical reports with a serious discussion of electronic digital computing on a theoretical and ideological level.<br><br>"Wiener first conceived the concept of cybernetics when he was studying antiaircraft fire control in which he considered the operator as part of the steering mechanism and of applying to such notions as feedback and stability which had been devised for mechanical systems and electrical circuits." DSB XIV: 347.<br><br>Even though this first edition appeared in English it was published in Paris. This made proof-reading of this very technical text difficult which resulted in numerous mistakes. In this edition Wiener made 340 changes which were corrected for the 1961 second edition. The many errors however did not affect the fine reviews and general popularity of the books since they did not affect the original and groundbreaking thoughts presented. <br><br>The ideas anticipated a technological evolution which would not be unfolded until 50 years after the publication: "Though cybernetics was intended to apply electronic computing to the study of life processes early efforts in this direction achieved very limited results. Perhaps the earliest successful electronic computer applications in biology were outside the scope of cybernetics in the study of molecular structure. Because of the great complexity of living systems it required the passage of nearly fifty years before sufficient advances in computing power enabled such endeavours as the human genome project and efforts to simulate living systems." br. Secondo la definizione che ne dà Norbert Wiener, che ne è unanimemente considerato il padre, la cibernetica è la disciplina che studia i processi riguardanti «la comunicazione e il controllo nell'animale e nella macchina». Muovendo da qui Wiener esamina le conseguenze delle conquiste della tecnica sull'organizzazione sociale, mettendo in evidenza che non sono né scientifici né sensati quei ragionamenti che, utilizzando i concetti e gli schemi della cibernetica, tendono a valutare il comportamento umano solo in base all'efficienza e al rendimento. Affermare che i movimenti dell'uomo possono essere studiati con gli stessi criteri con cui si studiano i movimenti di un meccanismo automatico, non rende lecito in alcun modo giudicare abnormi o inutili tutti quei comportamenti umani che non abbiano la meccanicità e la produttività dei meccanismi semplici in uso oggi, se non altro perché se si vogliono trarre conclusioni sull'uomo bisogna studiarlo nella sua complessità.
