‎Newton Isaac 1643 1727‎

‎Optice: sive de reflexionibus refractionibus inflexionibus et coloribus lucis libri tres. Auctore Isaaco Newton equite aurato. Latine reddidit Samuel Clarke S.T.P. Editio novissima.‎

‎Lausanne: Sumpt. Marci-Michaelis Bousquet & Sociorum MDCCXL. . First Latin ed. after Newton's death from the last English corrected edition. XVIIIth c. quarter leather binding with corners and marbled paper. VG. "When Newton let his Philosophy of Nature be known.- // For orders to be delivered outside Spain please let you see our sale and shipping terms type A.- // 4º leaves 242x190mm.; 2 XXXII 363 1 p.; sign.: pi2 cruz-4cruz4 A-Z4 Aa-Yy4 Zz2; engraved portrait signed Daudet lacks in this copy; title-page in two inks red and black; vignette sined Delamoncin; Daudet sculp. in title-page; friezes and initial letters from woodcuts signed Papillon ; 12 folded engravings.- // XVIIIth c. quarter leather binding with corners and marbled paper; smooth spine with gilt borders and label; yellow edges; engravings bound at the end of each part; thick paper diaphanous edition. Brushed edge boards; first signature in different paper browned; Newton portrait lacks in this copy.- // Prov. No data.- // Refs.: Gray 182. - // Although Newton s plan for his Opticks goes back to 1690 the first edition did not appear until 1704. Its beginning and its end were very eloquent. If he began saying that My design in this book is not to explain the Properties of Light by Hypotheses but to propose and prove them by Reason and Experiments he closed it by doing something unusual: by arranging at the end of the third book sixteen open questions in which he dropped his thoughts on the ultimate nature of things. With these sixteen questions he partly supplanted a projected fourth book which was apparently intended to demonstrate the existence of multiple forces operating at a distance. In order to disseminate his Optics across the continent Newton sought and obtained from the celebrated philosopher Samuel Clarke its translation into Latin with a payment of £ 500 but in the meantime he revised the content and added seven other questions to the sixteen of the original edition. In them he made clearer what he thought so much about the nature of light holding a corpuscular theory - critizicing Huygens - as well as on the dynamics of nature - against the Cartesian mechanistic view - with multiple active forces that kept the world in motion gravitational electric magnetic and even ensuring the existence of others that were still unknown because they acted at distances too small to be observable with the eye - chemical forces and on God s relationship with nature. A dozen years later in the 1718 second English edition Newton still added eight other questions which he intercalated by numbering them 17 to 24 leaving a total of thirty one which implied a new Latin edition the second and definitive in 1719. The new questions were meant to postulate the ether existence and to recover somewhat more of the projected fourth book by exposing more facets of its natural philosophy to be read Physics Chemistry and Biology even if we are in a treatise on Optics concealed as a program of research that would be necessary. During Newton lifetime was published another English edition in 1721 but although it self identifies as corrected as it did not carry any newness it did not generate a new Latin edition so that this one from 1740 is the first edition published in Latin after Newton s death and includes the latest version of the Optics. It is also the first to retrieve and perhaps improve the elegance of the first English edition lost in the other1. - // 1 It s enormous what has been written on Newton but a very good approximation to his person and get with it the glance to read his works which we dare to recommend is that offered in Richard S. Westfall: The life of Isaac Newton.- Cambridge university Press 1993." Sumpt. Marci-Michaelis Bousquet & Sociorum, MDCCXL. unknown‎

London 1704." one of the great books in the history of science. "Newton's Optics did for Light what his Principia had done for Gravitation namely placed it on a scientific basis." E.W. Brown. The translation was brought to light "At the request of Newton Dr. Samuel Clarke prepared a Latin edition of his Optics which appeared 1706 and he was generously presented by Sir Isaac with GBP 500 or GBP 100 for each of his five children as a token of the appreciation and gratitude of the author. DeMoivre is said to have secured and taken charge of this translation and to have spared neither time nor trouble in the task. Newton met him every evening at a coffe-house and when they have finished their work he took De Moivre home with him to spend the evening in philosophical conversation."Brewster in his "Newton" 1855".<br>"In the accumulation of optical phenomena from his first paper the short memoir in Philosophical Transaction 1672 until the above book the Optics. 33 years later Newton had gathered explanations to many problems. The rainbow is fully explained and also "Newton's rings" produced by pressing the flat side of a plano-convex glass against a double convex lens of long focal lenght producing rings of alternating brightness and darkness; his explanation was not valid as he did not know optical interference. He speculated on the double refraction of Icelandic spar." Dibner in Heralds of Science No 148 - G.J. Gray No 180. hardcover‎

‎Lausannae & Geneva: Marci-Michaelis Bousquet & Sociorum 1740. 1740. 4to. iv xxxii 363 1 pp. Half-title engraved frontispiece portrait of Newton engr. Jean-Louis Daudet after Vanderbank 12 engraved folding plates title vignette of 4 cherubs and a female figure each using an optical instrument representing learning optics/perspective drawn by Delamoncein and engraved by Daudet head & tail pieces and woodcut initial letters drawn by Papillon index; first 11 leaves browned. Contemporary full vellum green leather gilt-stamped spine label edges with decorative red freckling as designed by the binder; foot of spine with faint ink marking "11-". Paper unevenly browned. Verso of title with small ink annotation "=1135="; rear pastedown with another notation "á 20.Luglio 1801." Very good. Third Latin edition edited by Bousquet with a dedication to Joannes Bernoulli. This edition contains the full array of 31 querries. / "Newton's contributions to the science of optics :: his discovery of the unequal refractions of rays of different color his theory of color and his investigations of 'Newton's rings' to mention only a few of the most noteworthy :: place him among the premier contributors to that science. . . . Today we recognize that his work on optics offers unique rewards in its exciting innovative conjunction of physical theory experimental investigation and mathematics and in the revealing glimpse that it provides of a crucial period in the evolution of experimental science." :: Alan E. Shapiro The Optical Papers of Isaac Newton: Volume 1 1984 p. xi. / Jean-Louis Daudet 1695-1756 who made the frontispiece and title vignette was an engraver and print publisher active in Lyon inherited business from his father Etienne Joseph Daudet. He flourished from 1722 till his death in 1756. Thereafter the business continued by his widow in association with his son-in-law Louis Martin Roch Joubert until 1773. / "Newton famously declared that it is not the business of science to make hypotheses. However it's well to remember that this position was formulated in the midst of a bitter dispute with Robert Hooke who had criticized Newton's writings on optics when they were first communicated to the Royal Society in the early 1670's. The essence of Newton's thesis was that white light is composed of a mixture of light of different elementary colors ranging across the visible spectrum which he had demonstrated by decomposing white light into its separate colors and then reassembling those components to produce white light again. However in his description of the phenomena of color Newton originally included some remarks about his corpuscular conception of light perhaps akin to the cogs and flywheels in terms of which James Maxwell was later to conceive of the phenomena of electromagnetism. Hooke interpreted the whole of Newton's optical work as an attempt to legitimize this corpuscular hypothesis and countered with various objections." / "Newton quickly realized his mistake in attaching his theory of colors to any particular hypothesis on the fundamental nature of light and immediately back-tracked arguing that his intent had been only to describe the observable phenomena without regard to any hypotheses as to the cause of the phenomena. Hooke and others continued to criticize Newton's theory of colors by arguing against the corpuscular hypothesis causing Newton to respond more and more angrily that he was making no hypothesis he was describing the way things are and not claiming to explain why they are. This was a bitter lesson for Newton and in addition to initiating a life-long feud with Hooke went a long way toward shaping Newton's rhetoric about what science should be. . ." / "The first edition of The Opticks 1704 contained only 16 queries but when the Latin edition was published in 1706 Newton was emboldened to add seven more which ultimately became Queries 25 through 31 when in the second English edition he added Queries 17 through 24. Of all these one of the most intriguing is Query 28 which begins with the rhetorical question "Are not all Hypotheses erroneous in which Light is supposed to consist of Pression or Motion propagated through a fluid medium" In this query Newton rejects the Cartesian idea of a material substance filling in and comprising the space between particles. Newton preferred an atomistic view believing that all substances were comprised of hard impenetrable particles moving and interacting via innate forces in an empty space as described further in Query 31." :: Newton's Cosmological Queries :: MathPages. / Grace K. This treatise on optics was first published in English in 1704 the first Latin edition published in 1706. Sir Isaac Newton 1643-1727 was an English physicist mathematician astronomer alchemist philosopher and theologian. He is most well-known for his "Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica" published in 1687 laying the ground work for most classical mechanics. He built the first practical reflecting telescope and he developed a theory of color based on the observation that a prism decomposes white light into many colors that form the visible light spectrum. He expanded on these theories in "Opticks". We find 20 libraries worldwide holding the book. A wide margined and internally exceptionally crisp copy. ---- Babson/Macomber 132; Wallis 174; Sparrow Milestones of Science 150; Dibner Heralds of Science 148; Horblit 79b; PMM / Printing and the Mind of Man 172; Norman 1588. FIRST EDITION FIRST ISSUE of Newton's important optical discoveries in collected form. "Newton's Opticks did for light what his Principia had done for gravitation namely placed it on a scientific basis" E.W. Brown quoted in Babson. "Opticks is also distinguished in two other ways: the first edition contained Newton's first mathematical papers in print . and in the later editions it was embellished with a set of 'Queries' long supposed to represent Newton's opinions on the chief mysteries of Nature". PMM 172. Opticks includes explanations of the rainbow "Newton's rings" the color circle the spectrum of sunlight and the invention of the reflecting telescope. "This work includes assertions of the priority of Newton over Leibniz in the discovery of the calculus explanations of optical phenomena such as the rainbow 'Newton rings' the double refraction of Icelandic spar and important 'Queries' as to the nature of matter" Horblit. Opticks itself was written in the 1670s. Newton showed the manuscript to microscope pioneer and fellow Royal Society member Robert Hooke whose criticisms were so withering that Newton elected to stall publication until after Hooke's demise. Unusually for one of Newton's works "Opticks" was first published in English the Latin version following in 1706. This copy was consigned to Christie's by the Widow of Harrison D. Horblit Mermin Horblit 1910-2009 and sold in New York on April 22 1994 USD 16100. - Visit our website to see more images! for Sam. Smith and Benj. Walford, printers to the Royal Society hardcover‎

Contemporary panelled calf raised bands neatly rebacked preserving most of original backstrip red morocco label. With 12 folding plates as called for. Babson 136; PMM 172 first edition; Norman 1588 first edition; ESTC T69138. Boards with a few minor spots extremities a little rubbed leaves at beginning and end with mild offsetting from turn-in glue occasional minor foxing but an excellent copy the text clean and fresh with well-preserved plates and in a solid binding. The last edition of Newton's groundbreaking work to be revised by the author before his death this version contains the complete set of 31 "Queries" exploring the nature of light and color. First published in 1704 with 16 queries "Opticks" grew out of experiments begun while Newton was riding out the plague years 1665-66 in Lincolnshire as well as from findings described in his early lecture series at Cambridge. It caused a sensation in England and on the Continent. PMM notes "The core of his work was the observation that the spectrum of colours formed when a ray of light shines through a glass prism is stretched along its axis together with his experimental proof that rays of different colours are refracted to different extents. This causes the stretching or dispersion of the spectrum. All previous philosophers and mathematicians had been sure that white light is pure and simple regarding colours as modifications or qualifications of the white. Newton showed experimentally that the opposite is true. Printed for W. Innys unknown‎

‎Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica. The Third Edition 1726 with Variant Readings. Assembled and Edited by Alexandre Koyré and I. bernard Cohen with the assistance of Anne Whitman. Together with Introduction to Newton's 'Principia'.‎

‎Cambridge MA: Harvard University Press 1971 & 72. 3 volumes quarto. original black cloth titles to spines in silver. With the dust jackets. Some faint spotting to the edges of the text blocks. The jacket to the introductory volume has a short closed tear at the head of the spine panel which has been repaired with tape on the verso the spine panel is also faded and there are a few small ink marks on the upper panel. The jacket to volume I with some small abrasions at the head and tail of the spine panel. An excellent set in the fresh cloth. First printing of the definitive modern critical edition of Newton's magnum opus an uncommonly lovely and fresh set in the jackets. Co-editors I. Bernard Cohen 1914-2003 and Alexandre Koyré 1892-1964 were two of the leading figures in the development of the history of science during the 20th century. Koyré "was responsible for the transformation of the history of science from an antiquarian discipline whose role was to chronicle gradual advances towards modern science into one in which deep conceptual issues could be raised about the nature of space time and matter the role of experiment and theory the role of scientific instruments the place of mathematics in physical theory and so on" Gaukroger "Alexandre Koyré and the History of Science as a Species of the History of Philosophy" in Hypotheses and Perspectives in the History and Philosophy of Science 2018. Cohen received his bachelor of science in mathematics at Harvard in 1937 and "was among the first to enroll in Harvard's new Program in the History of Science and Learning when Dr. James B. Conant started it and the first in 1947 to receive a Ph.D. in the history of science. After the war he taught the history of scientific ideas and practices to graduate students and undergraduates eventually seeing the subject elevated into a separate department" New York Times obituary June 28th 2003. Cohen was renowned as a scholar of Newton with this edition of the Principia and his 1999 English translation with Latinist Anne Whitman still considered the key scholarly editions.
