London: Henry Woodfall 1736. FIRST EDITION. With engraved frontispiece interpolated leaf 143-144 and leaf containing errata on the recto publisher's advertisements on the verso. Paneled sprinkled calf in a contemporary style; a large paper copy with very wide margins a few contemporary annotations. First edition of Newton's treatise on the calculus a work of great importance and rarity. Ready for publication in 1671 Newton circulated the manuscript among his friends who urged him to establish priority by publishing his own work. He steadfastly refused and prior to his death entrusted it to Henry Pemberton who never had it published. It was not until 1736 that Method of fluxions was finally published in the present English translation by John Colson who added a lengthy commentary. The original Latin edition did not appear until 1779 in the Opera omnia. Henry Woodfall unknown

Artistic hygienic and rational are not the most familiar words today but a hundred and twenty years ago they evoked the highest sentiments and became powerful weapons in an attack which developed not merely on the dress of the time but on the concept of fashion itself. It is the fascinating story of this movement its members and the clothes they wore that Stella Mary Newton tells. Mrs Bloomer advocate of the famous bifurcated garment named after her was a forerunner by some twenty years. Between her and the main development the only experimental dress was worn by women of the PreRaphaelite circle. The self-conscious attempt to create a permanent style of dress above ephemeral fashions. conducive to health yet conforming to an aesthetic ideal did not begin until the '70s. Almost immediately it was identified with some justification by the public with the parallel movement for women's rights. Stella My Newton also stresses that aesthetic ideas were used as much by the fashionable world as by the reformers. The movement reached a peak in the '8os with the London Health Exhibition the theories of Dr Jaeger and the foundation of the Rational Dress Society. From this point the story is really of the reformers' ideas finding their way into the ordinary wardrobe. Also the new breed of reformers involved in the magazine Aglaia saw dress as `not so much a sanitary reality as a symbol of democracy'. As well as being a most valuable contribution to fashion history this is social history at its most enjoyable offering a new perspective on the PreRaphaelites the Aesthetic Movement Women's Rights and Socialism. .
