Copper engraved portrait frontispiece by Scott after Allen and 4 woodcuts by Thomas Bewick's workshop possibly by Bewick's apprentice Isaac Nicholson. Contemporary paper-covered boards with printed paper label to spine; edges uncut. Binding fragile with cracked joints bumped corners and loss to spine and to title label. Toning & creasing to uncut edges.and a little scattered foxing offsetting and fingermarking; ownership inscription of Robert and Alex Henderson to title page in ink. pp 187-190 unopened. Binding in good condition contents very good. Companion volume to The Spring Day by Fisher for which Bewick also provided woodcuts; both works proved popular and A Winter Season ran to five editions with the cuts from Bewick's workshop and another edition without them. Author Fisher was blinded by smallpox in infancy so would have been unable to view the vignettes which feature " a wood shooter" beggar on crutches shepherd and sheepdog and a lively curling match all carefully noted in the paperwork for the Bewick workshop in Newcastle.
