‎About the Book:- The Chief sources of information regarding the early history of civil society are first, the study of races in their primitive condition; and, second, the study of the symbols employed by advanced nations in the constitution or exercise of civil rights. From these studies pursued together, we obtain to a large extent, the power of classifying social phenomena as more or less archaic and thus of connecting and arranging in their order the stages of human advancement. The book is devided into the following chapters, namely, Legal Symbolism and Primitive Life, The form of capture in Marriage Ceremonies, The Origin of the form of capture, On the Prevalence of the Practice of capturing Wives, de facto, Of the rule against Marriage between members of the same Tribe, On the state of Hostility, Exogamy: its Origin-Comparative Archaism of Exogamy and Endogamy, Ancient System of Kinship, and their Influence on the Structure of the Primitive Groups, The Decay of Exogamy. About the Autor:-John Ferguson McLennan FRSE LLD (14 October 1827 – 16 June 1881), was a Scottish advocate, social anthropologist and ethnologist. He was born in Inverness, the son of John McLennan, an insurance agent, and his wife, Jessie Ross. He was educated in that city, then studied law at King's College, Aberdeen, graduating M.A. in 1849. In 1865, McLennan published Primitive Marriage. In it he argued from symbolic and ceremonial forms of bride kidnapping (see also Types of marriage). His ideas had been partially anticipated by Johann Jakob Bachofen, writing in 1861 on matriarchy, but were independent. McLennan developed from ethnographic data a social evolutionist theory of marriage, and also of systems of kinship according to natural laws. He rejected patriarchal society as an early stage, arguing in favour of agnation as a more basic evolutionary point; he proposed an early model of social groups, a war band mainly male, practicing female infanticide and acquiring female sexual partners, with promiscuity and matrilineality salient features. A picture of this book is avai Mendelssohn p. 788: ". . . an interesting account of the country and its inhabitants. . . interesting account of Zimbabwe". The author, a medical doctor living in Jamaica, travelled 4,500 miles, mostly on foot over a period of 20 months, including many parts previously unexplored. "He never once found himself prompted to fire a shot in anger. . . he can say what perhaps no other man who has crossed Africa can - that of the many native carriers who travelled with him he did not lose one by death." (p. 6) An interesting and detailed account, the author was able to gain information as a doctor not available otherwise. The plates are very sharp and are not made from a screening process.‎
